Go for a walk, ride a bike, read a book, make a drawing, play an instrument, relax... it's not that hard, you're overreacting.
bikes are technology. so are pencils and pens, as well as books.
I never knew teachers were allowed to assign this kind of work. I mean you do have other things in your life than just their history class.
At my elementary school they tried to do "turn off the violence" day. Fuck off, Pokemon is on.
List of what I specifically not allowed to use: - Phones - iPad, iPod - Laptop/Computer - ANY GAMING DEVICE - TV - DVD Player - CD Player - Camera (of any kind) - Movie Theater - Digital Alarm Clock
I went without this stuff for three days once for a communications class. It seriously was not that difficult. Go read a book or something. I'm pretty dependent on my tech but if I had to go without it for a few days, it's really not that big a deal.
bikes are technology. so are pencils and pens, as well as books.
so are clothes, shoes, glasses, homes, most foods, clean water, sidewalks and roads.

Why is it that if there is electricity running through it that there is a threat that it will rot your brain?
So how are you not addicted?
So by the same logic, If I told you to quit posting and get off your computer, and you didn't, you would be considered "addicted"? Hell, i300 merely questions the notion of this exercise and you claim that he is addicted.
I find this completely ridiculous and irrational to the entire class. some ignorant bastard explaining how "all gamers are addicted to the computer" and "virtual worlds have replaced the real world for this generation."
So how are you not addicted?
If your parents are making you do it, insist that they do it with you to support you. Watch them change their attitude then.
I had this at my school, but instead of addicted gamers, we were studying transcendentalism
Who is requiring you to tell your parents?
Dear lord you guys are making way too big a deal for an assignment that requires you to not touch unnecessary technology for ONE day.
so are clothes, shoes, glasses, homes, most foods, clean water, sidewalks and roads.
and this argument doesn't even make sense, as she gave you a list of things that she wants you to avoid. Obviously there are things that you need to use in this day and age. The things she listed, you could survive ONE DAY without. You won't die. Hell, having one day to yourself away from everything is healthy. Gives you time to think. Go OUTSIDE for once. Enjoy the weather. Ride a bike. Go swimming. Or just go roll around in the dirt like kids should.
Get stabbed by some hobo and sue the school cause you werent allowed to use you mobile to call for help. Win/Win
Again, what is the point of this? Why is it that if there is electricity running through it that there is a threat that it will rot your brain?
Obv that's a dumb thing to say about any sort of tech. But going without stuff for a day? How on earth is that so difficult that you feel the need to go through SO MUCH WORK to avoid it? Even if you think her reasoning for it is stupid, it's kind of implying that your generation isn't capable of stepping back from modern day objects, and that's doing nothing to help your stance on the situation. Just do it. Honestly. It's not as bad as you all are making it out to be.

Honestly, you are having a discussion with people across the globe instantly, and this is the technology we should step back from because it makes us unintellectual? You claim that I dislike this because it's difficult when my entire argument has been that it is pointless. Should we churn butter ourselves then? That's the part when you say "Well obviously that's ridiculous but going back x years" And that is also the part where you dictate what century was the healthiest.
Don't do it and sue the school if you get failed, they can't tell you how to live your life outside of school.
I don't see why you're making such a big deal about not being able to use technology for JUST 24 hours. When I go to Mexico, which I do every year, I go for 3 days to 2 weeks without technology and not die from it. Read a book or go outside. It's not that hard.
It's the principle of the matter. It's the fact that their is an absurd phobia that technology = unhealth/mental decay/cancer.
People will tell you bullshit things all your life. You don't have to agree with it. I just don't see the point in whining about not being able to play a game or watch TV or listen to music for 24 hours. Maybe it's because I wasn't raised with all the shit I have now. I didn't have a phone or a TV or games or music at all when I was growing up. It was me and the dirt outside and I survived. Of course now, my work involves the computer and an immense amount of technology, but I do take days off from it. It feels fantastic to get away from things that I know aren't exactly necessary to get along. Obv you guys are so dependent on it that you have to put up such a huge argument when someone asks you to try it out.
Tell your parents you have to do this and tell them you don't want too. Then tell them to just lie to your teacher if he asks if you used anything.
Get a copy of Raising the Bar from somewhere and read it and then sleep the rest of the day.
Stay up for 50-60 hours? HOLY SHIT
It's not that hard.
Honestly, if you want to get out of it, just don't do it. I do strongly recommend getting the fuck off your computer and go outside and experience nature in a transcendental way or whatever
What the fuck is this even supposed to teach you? Without your computer life is a lot more boring?
It's supposed to teach you that you don't need technology to have fun.

I am not going to have a teacher tell me what I can or can't do during the weekend, at home or anywhere else were he has no authority (sure he can give me homework, but I'm not going to accept homework that forbids me nearly everything).
Is it really worth alot points-wise? if not just dont do it.
Honestly, you are having a discussion with people across the globe instantly, and this is the technology we should step back from because it makes us unintellectual? That's the part when you say "Well obviously that's ridiculous but going back x years" And that is also the part where you dictate what century was the healthiest.
If someone gives you the opportunity to experience something like having to churn butter yourself like they did in the "olden days", I don't see why you wouldn't take it. It's an interesting thing to experience. An assignment like the one given to the OP usually isn't mean for students to see that "technology is bad". Every teacher I've seen give this assignment has given it in order to see how the students reacted to the lack of tech in their day to day lives. That alone is worth the experience. See how you function without the things you normally have and see what you do different. If that's not a prospect that interests you simply because it takes away your favorite things when you don't want to go without them, then I feel sorry for you. I really do. Life is all about new experiences and if you pass them up just because you don't like them, then you won't experience very much.
Yes what a wonderful argument. Let's stick to a past lifestyle, because lord knows progress is terrifying. Because the way you grew up was obviously superior.
An assignment like the one given to the OP usually isn't mean for students to see that "technology is bad".
"Would our lives be more meaningful if we decreased the amount of time we spent in our virtual worlds." You seem to be under this delusion that it is because it does not interest me. In fact you seem to be constantly stating why I am arguing against this exercise in denial.
Also I like how you're telling me how I should argue with you. That's a little presumptuous, don't you think?
Yes what a wonderful argument. Let's stick to a past lifestyle, because lord knows progress is terrifying. Because the way you grew up was obviously superior.
I don't think you're understanding what she's saying.
Yes what a wonderful argument. Let's stick to a past lifestyle, because lord knows progress is terrifying. Because the way you grew up was obviously superior.
Note that I said that's why I don't see the point in your argument against that assignment. I am not forcing my previous lifestyle on you, and I don't understand why you're assuming that.
"Would our lives be more meaningful if we decreased the amount of time we spent in our virtual worlds."
Then obviously, the answer would be no, wouldn't it? From your stance, anyways.
Sleep 8 hours Friday night. Sleep 8 hours Saturday night. Sleep 8 hours Sunday night. There. Done. Or you could just chill out for a day. Sleep. Eat. Think about shit. Sleep some more. Draw. Play with your old Legos or something. Eat again. Sleep some more. And / or write an essay explaining how much shit in our world runs on "teh ebil teknolojy", and how minimal the negatives are when compared to the positives, if there even are negatives for some of the stuff.
Get a copy of Raising the Bar from somewhere and read it and then sleep the rest of the day. It's not that hard.
What's even less hard is ignoring the assignment completely.
Note that I said that's why I don't see the point in your argument against that assignment.
