I've had in mind of getting a tattoo for about the past 3 years now, however I have a few concerns.
My first problem is that I do a lot of bodybuilding, as such I can gain and lose weight a lot throughout a year and my overall mass keeps going up as I gain muscles, I've heard there might be problems about stretching the tattoo if you gain or lose too much weight/mass, is this a concern I should be having?
Second would be finding an actual artist that's clean, sanitary and good. My sister and her friends have some tattoos and their Artists are pretty good so less concerned on that side but more concerned about the sanitary side of it, how do I know if their work ethics are clean and safe?
Third is just what I would want, I have no clue where to begin on what kind of tattoo I would want, I've been thinking that getting a sleeve on my right or left arm would be cool from the wrist to the shoulder/chest or maybe from the elbow and up but I have no clue, I'd also want something that's not too dark, like I still want to see my arm if you get what I mean, I don't want my arm to just be one huge canvas fully filled with ink.
I assume most of these things are stuff I can clear up with the artist himself on what and where I want a tattoo but just wanted to clear things up before.

I don't want it to obscure my definition is a better way to put it in the third point.

First off, to answer quality of work/cleanliness and questioning what artist you want, you will have to travel to find the perfect artist for you, look all around as many as you can, all different styles, once you see one you like email them for a larger portfolio and for some questions, next step go visit, does it look nice and clean is there no pets/plants/open food about etc, watch an artist work, does he pull out a fresh needle, does he wear gloves does he wash his hands keep his face clean etc, all those little things.
when it comes to what you want, bring in what you want, all artists love custom work, artists love you more if you let them tattoo a piece of theirs onto you, depends if you like it that much i guess!
but i understand what you mean by not too dark, dont worry, blank ink tattoos are never as dark as when yo first get them, when you first get a black tattoo it's pure black depending on shading, over time it'll fade during the healing to the proper kind of black and white you see n a lot of tattoos, which i prefer cause it doesnt stick out so bad.
When it comes to still wanting to see the skin, do you mean patches? my sleeve atm is black and grey shading with a lot of open skin still seen underneath, which i like because it reminds me its not completely gone
Second, about gaining and losing weight, it depends how rapidly you do it and depends on the healing time, say you have af ull healed tattoo, and you have quite bit muscles, for the most part losing ab it of that muscle into skin will at the most cause a little adjustment, msot of the time it isnt too drastic, since i got my tattoo ive gained muscle a fair bit from working out and the tattoo has kept its shape all be it needing a tiny touchup in one area in particular. But gaining it very rapidly, say going from 7stone to 12 stone you'll notice a stretch depending on what kind of area, legs you normally wont worry, legs dont gain as much weight rapidly as other areas, tummy yea, you'll notice it being a bit stretched and arms it wont be as bad but depends how rapidly.
Best to look it up too, i cant say from expeirence but i know someone from school who got a large skull piece on his arm gain a lot of muscle afterwards and it stayed pretty much intact
There's no guarantee that you'll fuck your ears up, nor that you don't. It really depends on your skin and connective tissue. Well if you stretch only little each step, take your time and take care of them (cleaning them regularly, massaging with (jojoba-) oil), the chance increases a lot that they'll go back to normal if you don't want them in the future, but there is no guarantee. They may stay the same at 4mm, or they may get back to normal at 20mm - but you don't have full control over this.
Good advice is getting your ear pierced (not with one of those disgusting piercing guns!) at 1.2 or 1.6mm. Those are the normal sizes for almost all piercings. Go to a nice and competent piercer, he should work hygienic and be able to answer all your questions. Clean them regularly with what he recommends to you (here in Germany you get stuff like Octenisept or Prontolind, both are great), but not too often since that stuff kills bacteria but also dries out your skin. You piercer should tell you a timespan where you should do all that, and personally I would wait another one or two month after healing before I would start stretching. With sizes that small you could simply use expanders (meant only for stretching, not to be worn as permanent jewelery - get some nice tunnels or plugs for each step), stretching only one milimeter at once, and waiting at least one month before you stretch the next. Clean during that time daily with (perfume free) soap, and massage some nice body oil like jojoba oil in you stretched lobe, that really makes a difference. For tunnels and plugs I'd recommend to use steel, acrylic or wood - wood even reduces the smell you maybe get and keeps the body heat unlike steel, which is ideal for winter. Personally I don't like and trust silicone stuff, because only a few companies really use medical silicone - chances are that the used other silicone which can fuck up your ear, but if you want some get Kaos tunnels, they're fine.
Don't buy your stuff on super cheap sites like Crazy Factory, that stuff is really badly made. Search your local piercer for desired stuff, or look at sites like bodyartforms or Wildcat.
Well, those are just some tips which should help you with not fucking up your ear if you plan on stretching it :)
Thanks for the tips on Crazy Factory, because almost everyone I know gets stuff from there. Also the tips on materials was something I never really thought of. Thanks!
What hurts the most, a tattoo on the upper arm by the shoulder, or on the calf?
I'd say upper arm. I have both calves done, as well as my left arm, and the pain during my calves was a LOT easier to ignore. Certain parts were more painful than others, but it's by far the least pain I've felt in a tattoo. Honestly, I was shocked at how painful the arm was. Not unbearable, but it wasn't an easy 2 hours at all.
Well, this might have hurt less, actually. Got it done a few hours ago! (I'm a tad obsessed with The Book Of Mormon)

Reviving the thread again.
So i need to think of some more stuff to add to my sleeve, theres not a load of space to fill, enough for some more stuff, but i wanted to include Herbert West in there, trouble is i'm afraid it might clash with the theme of older style lovecraft work if i did a movie version, however i'm not sure if even the original sort of look would fit too.
Here i've included two pictures, one is some fan artwork of Herbert west and the other is the movie adaptions, i like both, but i'm afraid of it clashing with the style.

and here is the movie adaption of him, modernised to be at present day (at the movies creation)

The worries i have is, one is original art of a fictional character, the other is a representation of a character by an actor (Jeffery combes) so having his actual face on my arm might seem weird, then again i do have lovecrafts actual arm on me.
Other ideas i've had in mind is The Great Race of Yith, More innsmouth designs (deep ones, residents of innsmouth) and r'lyeh behind cthulhu, anyone have any thoughts?

Also considered having the King in Yellow as he is one of my favourite from the mythos who was expanded upon later on.

I do not think you should get an actor done personally. The idea of a whole sleeve of monsters appeals to me though. There are a lot of MOMENTS that I love in Lovecraft, but they would probably be difficult to illustrate well without a large area to work with and great artwork. But yeah there's tonnes of different creatures too, so that's my vote.
Also from what I remember your lovecraft portrait is quite classical/realistic in style, so you definitely want to be careful to preserve the overall consistency imo

Do not worry about the pain just choose the location based on what you would like. It's completely tolerable.
Since this seems to be a general body modification thread, I think it's best I post this here. I've had a desire for ear-shaping for a while now, I'm paricularly envious of this crazy lady:

I'm wondering about the practicallity and ease of access of such a procedure, though I'm unlikely to undergo it any time soon.

I've heard it's very simple process, but i can imagine it being pricey.
Also, y'know, it'll probably be looked at a hell of a lot differently than normal piercing and tats, most people cant stand looking at even stretched ears and you'll get a lot of looks.
But yknow, if that bothers you that is.
Ease of access probably terrible, it's not a prevalent thing to get done
Practicality, probably terrible in a lot of cases
Kinda hot though
