Looks pretty sweet, but I am not sure how it would work color-wise. Of course it'll all depend on your artist and so on, I can't say I am very knowledgeable about this. Keep us posted!
On the pain part, that is a very difficult question to answer, because it depends on many factors like your body, your mood, the environment, the location on the body etc... All in all, it is never as painful as you think it'll be, but it is not painless either. Places on the body with lots of nerve endings are more sensitive to pain.
For example when I had one done on my shoulder blade, while it hurt it was never too bad unless it was the third/fourth time going over a part to shade it and even then it was manageable. But when I had my chest piece, the parts close to the nipple and breast hurt like hell (not very descriptive, I know but it did hurt quite a bit). The thing is while you feel the pain, it also dulls down as well, as in there is a painful feeling and you know it hurts but it is not the same as stubbing your toe, you just know there is pain. Plus once you get started your body starts secreting natural painkillers and adrenaline so you get pumped and don't really notice it. It is only after a while when those substances run out/get cleared you get another pang of pain.
The pain or the fear of pain should not really play a factor in deciding to get a tattoo though in my opinion. All in all, worst case the pain is only going to last for 2-3 hours while getting the tattoo done and it goes away completely (at least for me) the moment you jump down from the chair (only to be replaced by unbelievably annoying itching a few days later).
On a related but different note, booked my appointment for my third tattoo for the 28th of August! Going to fill in an ouroboros tattoo I had from 2 years ago. It is not going to be too big, but my plan of getting one tat every year is right on track. The difficult part is waiting a year nowadays.

Got my yearly tat. Sorry the picture is crappy, I missed the opportunity to get a photo right after it was finished so this was after it swelled up a bit. Plus it is very difficult to get a proper shot of your back on your own.

The ouroboros I had for the past 2.5 years now (it actually was my first tattoo), but because of some really crappy care advice my then artist gave me it scarred and faded quite badly even though it has never been exposed to sun for a long time. Right now it feels like a 3D tattoo. But even so I can't really bring myself to get it covered, on some level I feel like it is a lesson learned.
The red swirls looks quite vivid, and even my artist wasn't/isn't sure how the two colors overlapping is going to turn out, it might look very cool or very crappy but we'll see in a couple of weeks when it is properly healed.

im trying to decide on a design to have done on my left hand once my escher piece is finished, want to stay with a geometric/blackwork/dotwork theme on that arm so am thinking i might get a mandala
on my right shoulder i have a samurai i had done about 10 years ago, might finally get it turned into a sleeve with chestplate and continue the japanese theme on that arm/hand
i noticed recently that people who run tattoo blogs are opinionated twats, not going to go into specifics cos its just giving them traffic they dont deserve

I have friends that get mad when I say a tattoo should have some sort of significance to them. I mean, yeah we wear clothes that we think are cool purely because they're cool (a common argument) but the whole idea of permanence should really make people think a little bit more about what they get.
I have probably 4 or 5 friends with koi fish tattoos that they got for no reason, which is cool and all but I don't really understand the point. They get it, I ask "Oh that's cool, any reason for it?" and... nope, it looks cool. End of conversation. Alright then.
On that topic, I'm getting my first tattoo in the next few months, if things go according to plan.

I love the design, love the album, AND it was one of the few things I've ever bonded with my dad over. It was also the first album that really made me start getting in to music.
