depression = a feeling of hopelessness, sadness, etc clinical depression = persistent feelings of depression
depression = a feeling of hopelessness, sadness, etc clinical depression = persistent feelings of depression
Most people in this thread have the later version. And most people who you notice are depressed are the later as well. Normal depression goes away fairly quick. If it sticks around, then you can labeled at clinically depressed. Which I think most the people in this thread have, because I notice most posts begin with "ive felt this way for as long as I remember" or among the lines of that.
Am I that believes that the majority of depression cases are fake and made up? I know some people have real depression (i.e. seeing your mom and dad die right in front of your eyes as a baby, etc.) and that should usually be followed up on by a therapist, if you're that kind of person. If you want to see some lame bullshit, just click here and read about "Facebook Depression." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42298789/ns/health-mental_health/t/docs-warn-about-teens-facebook-depression/ Now when I hear of people's "depressions" I hear things like people losing their job, kicked out of school, boyfriend/girlfriend trouble, children, their phone was taking away, or school is "stressing" (trust me, I've heard those last two before). I think the majority of people's depression is caused by them always thinking they are depressed and that they need a way out. Thinking, "I'm so depressed I can't handle this anymore so I'm going to lay in my bed for a month." I'm in no way saying the way you solve it is by thinking "I'm a winner... blah blah blah," but the way you solve these "serious problems" is by confronting the issue and getting over it. You're girlfriend cheated on you? Tell yourself that she's a lying scumbag that doesn't deserve what you can bring and that you'll just go out and find another girl. I think "depression" now-a-days is overly used and has been re-defined, in my eyes, as being weak and not having a great scale of self-esteem and/or confidence in yourself. Teens these days (from what I see because I'm a teen as well) are always trying to find the easy way out of things: Aww, poor Jimmy doesn't want to go to school because his little feel-ers was hurt by Sally? And the parent (and a bad one) usually responds by re-enforcing this bad behavior by saying: Sure if you don't want to go to school and waste your life by sleeping-in for the next week, I'll just call the school and tell them you're sick. Too many people are being coddle and babied from their parents and all that is causing is people constantly going around thinking that their life is horrible and that they're going to take the next couples days off of work and- oops, they've just been fired, and then THAT causes a god damn depression. Tell me what you guys think. I think the majority, not all of it, is bogus.
you are an absolute moron
you are an absolute moron
I am glad there is something you and I can finally agree on in this thread.
the fucking stupidity in this thread....
the fucking stupidity in this thread....
Which part. The depressed people. or the people saying depression doesn't exist?
Which part. The depressed people. or the people saying depression doesn't exist?
people saying depression doesn't exist it's a chemical imbalance caused by lack of seretonin in the brain that's like me saying people with cancer are faking it...
I can agree to that. I don't think its just a chemical imbalance though.
I disagree that depression doesn't exist, but I stand by the fact that half of the people in this thread probably haven't experienced depression but more so just sadness for an extended period of time, which, believe it or not, is not the same as a depression. [editline]3rd July 2011[/editline]
I can agree to that. I don't think its just a chemical imbalance though.
.. it is.

[editline]3rd July 2011[/editline] .. it is.
I agree with this post.
That's fucking stupid, sadness by definition is a temporary low mood. Clinical depression is a long-term intense low mood. That's the only difference.
.. it is.
Not everyone who is depressed has a lack of serotonin.
Not everyone who is depressed has a lack of serotonin.
I think you are getting "clinical depression" and "I'm in a bad mood because my mom grounded me" confused.
That's fucking stupid, sadness by definition is a temporary low mood. Clinical depression is a long-term intense low mood. That's the only difference.
There's so much more to depression than low-mood. If you're just feeling blue, then no, you're not at all depressed.
Because there is totally not any middle ground between "I lost my family, I have unpayable debt and now I'm lonely, suicidal and depressed" and "MOM TOOK MY CELL FUCK MY LIFE", right??
You don't need to have tragic events happen for you to be clinically depressed... I'm just saying theres a difference between that and being in a shitty mood for a few days.
There's so much more to depression than low-mood. If you're just feeling blue, then no, you're not at all depressed.
I agree to this. But depression has a degrees of severity. Such as. I am depressed because I lost my job and cant work and I am depressed because I have no friends Or I am depressed because my parents are dead and I don't know what to do with life I mean those situations usually have different severity of depression as a result.
oh my god [editline]3rd July 2011[/editline] thank you so much for enlightening me, I would never have figured on my own.
Well you're acting like I didn't know the difference. Calm down there, tiger.
I agree to this. But depression has a degrees of severity. Such as. That's being sad. You can be sad for a prolonged period of time without it being a depression. I'm not knocking any people down by saying this, I find the two things to be equally bad, however, they're by far not the same. I've been sad for long periods of time because someone close to me died, however, that's not depression, that's just me being sad.
Not at all, I'm just glad, you've changed the way I look on everything!!
form opinion on someone -- make dickheadish remarks to everything they say because you're CLEARLY a genius
Being sad for a prolonged period of time... is the definition of depression... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001941/ Sad is even a synonym for the word depressed... [editline]3rd July 2011[/editline]
form opinion on someone -- make dickheadish remarks to everything they say because you're CLEARLY a genius
Kinda similar to what you're doing in the other thread. Everyone forms opinions of people, to try to point that out is.. useless.

People who self identify as depressed or who have been diagnosed have a right to talk to each other. You're ruining the thread spouting bullshit and trying to convince us you know our feelings more than we do. Get the fuck out of here.
Oh fuck off, that's not what I'm doing. I'm simply discussing something right now. People who self identify as depressed also need to stop. I made a post on this earlier - if you're in the mindset that "Jesus fuck, I'm depressed", you're not going to feel any better any time soon.
First half of what Octave said.
I stand by that, but that was part of the discussion. I'm not going to say who's depressed and who's not. That's not really any of my business - I'll let people think what they want.
Lets not make this thread a full blown flame war. its hard juggling two threads at once at times.
Oh fuck off, that's not what I'm doing. I'm simply discussing something right now. People who self identify as depressed also need to stop. I made a post on this earlier - if you're in the mindset that "Jesus fuck, I'm depressed", you're not going to feel any better any time soon.
So that couldn't have been expressed as just "think positive"? I'm fairly sure every person who has these feelings knows about "thinking positive". That's what every friend who doesn't really care or understand tells you, pretty much. If you wanna discuss whether depression exists or not in your own thread, or if you want to make a thread calling out half of the depressed people in the world, be my guest, but this is a chat where people talk about their shit and it's a fucking great thing to have. We don't just live in this thread, hitting F5 over and over again to see if another person posted to give us sympathy or with another sad story. It's just a nice thing to have, to be able to share and feel comfortable. Now please kindly fuck off. I'm sorry I got into a rant, I just don't like when people make generalizations like this.
Not everyone who is depressed has a lack of serotonin.
I'll agree to that. In a recent move cross-country I ran out of birth control and became suicidally depressed again. Now that it's kicked back in I'm feeling worlds better, so I don't think my problem at that time was whacky serotonin levels. While I don't know (I don't think anyone's too sure to be honest) what kind of chemical imbalance causes depression, I wouldn't be surprised if there is something that goes funky and out of whack. Actually, if I remember my psych classes correctly, scientists still aren't sure if low serotonin levels can cause depression or if depression can cause low serotonin levels.
