Yeah i have a slight personal bias against it, but I could say the same to you about being optimistic though.
seriously, what is wrong with your reading comprehension?
I just think it shouldn't be given out so liberally as it is given out.
I agree, but that's the fault of greedy people. the medication itself is useful when prescribed properly under professional care.
I don't know bro. It just seems like you have a vendetta against optimism at times.
I don't know bro. It just seems like you have a vendetta against optimism at times.
it seems like you need to go back and read my posts again
and I think you're a moron who gets upset if someone calls them out for spreading bullshit
Pretty much sums up how you feel about someone trying to be optimistic or encouraging optimism.
JDK, I don't even know why I bother with you anymore.
I don't think you should be giving advice, but reading some of the advice here. You come off as someone who needs help.
Pretty much sums up how you feel about someone trying to be optimistic or encouraging optimism.
once again you're struggling with reading comprehension
I have nothing against being optimistic, and I never said or implied I did in any of my posts
You know clearly what he was trying to say.
[editline]13th September 2011[/editline]
Just hard? So not impossible than?
Why are you depressed in the first place bro? If you don't mind me asking.
Some of the most depressing stuff that can happen to a guy.
You said I was "spreading bullshit" when I said you were lashing out at optimism.
I think you have a reading comprehension problem, you keep assuming things so loosely and getting bent out of shape by them. (hence your little fiasco with Evilan, and your comments about my "moronic bullshit")
Dude, I'm done with you. Everyone else doesn't even want to bother anymore with you it seems, why not I? Good luck bro. Keep that pessimist attitude up, it will land you in a world of shit some day. Or just keep you down in it too?

Care to share? No one is going to judge
and I'm telling you that it's NOT that simple because a depressed person is at rock bottom, and their thoughts generally aren't positive
your advice would be fine if we were talking about a person who's having a bad day, but for someone experiencing depression it's a whole different story
You're hopeless. Have ever you ever tried to seek help from a professional? Have you even looked up methods to overcome your mental problems? If you had, then you would know that day 1 of any therapy involves changing cognitive thinking. Any good therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist would tell you this.
You said I was "spreading bullshit" when I said you were lashing out at optimism.
nope, I wasn't referring to just this one incident.
I think you have a reading comprehension problem, you keep assuming things so loosely and getting bent out of shape by them. (hence your little fiasco with Evilan, and your comments about my "moronic bullshit")
I'm not even bent out of shape. you say that every time someone has an issue with your posts.
Keep that pessimist attitude up, it will land you in a world of shit some day. Or just keep you down in it too, I guess.
yeah, except I don't see how you've come to the conclusion that I have a pessimist attitude. your reading comprehension is absolutely terrible.
evilan implied it was when the only advice in his post was to think positively and that being optimistic is a plausible way to treat depression
I'm not telling you to think positively. I'm telling you that when you have a negative thought or situation, that you spin it so it becomes a positive. if depression is complete mental uncontrollability of your negative thinking then you have to start disciplining yourself to change your thinking process.
You're hopeless. Have ever you ever tried to seek help from a professional? Have you even looked up methods to overcome your mental problems? you're referring to cognitive therapy, which is done with a PROFESSIONAL. yeah, that's fine, but the point I'm making is that it's very difficult to change your negative thoughts into positive ones if you're genuinely depressed, and also you may have a chemical imbalance in your brain. in that case, you're probably going to need anti-depressants.

Death of close family members.
6 days a week work week because parents are kicking me out my 18th
Fights between divorced parents.
Girlfriends treating me like shit and taking advantage of me.
"Friends" forgetting about me.
I can't really say much for the first two.
But I know to well how it is to be in the middle of two divorcee fighting.
My best advice? stay out of it. Ignore it. Getting involved will only make it worse.
Your girlfriend treating you like shit is bad dude. Either put your foot down and tell her to quit that shit. Or just leave her, which I think would be the best thing. She's abusing you, and treating you like shit. You don't need that shit right now obviously.
Tell your friends what they're doing is bothering you. If they ignore you/act like pricks, forget them. Why would you want to be around them in the first place if they acted like that?

1. The death of your close ones will pass in time, take solace in that.
2. Try to cut down your hours temporarily until some the stress in your life passes. I know you said you were moving out, but renting an apartment with a someone (even a stranger) is the best way to go. You can rent a decent apartment w/ someone for about $350 a month with basic utilities. And at the end of your lease you get some of what you pay back, so try to factor that in.
3. Ah yes, the classic break up. This is probably where most of your problems are stemming from. The best thing you can do is stay neutral and avoid interfering as often as possible, and let your parents settle it.
4. Would you let any of your friends or relatives take advantage of you? Probably not, so what makes her so special that she deserves that right. Talk to her about it and get to the bottom of it. If she doesn't change, then dump her and move on. If it comes to that, then know you did the best you could and it was her fault things didn't work out.
5. You're friends are probably "forgetting" you because you are bottling yourself up. You probably haven't noticed the change, but it's obvious to those who are around you often enough that you are being less social with them. This is probably the trickiest bit to overcome because closing up is a natural reaction to depression or stress, so you need to find some way to manage it. Video games. from my experience, aren't an answer though.
I blame most of it on working 60 hour weeks.
My girl was sympathetic with me for the first part, which was great.
But it sort of spiraled downwards when she broke up with me and called me a mistake,
have you ever suffered from depression or taken a psychology course?
I did have a time in my life where I had very heavy depression, if you can call it that. Although I did not take any medication. I know that some cases of depression are based of neural factors which cannot simply be cured by having an optimistic view.
I just stated that it all sounds so sad.
In case of a debilitating mental illness, just think of sunshine and rainbows and puppy dogs.
Works for Schizophrenia too, just remember that everything that's not real isn't real.
My life went for the better today. One of my fuckbuddies came over and... well we fucked :v:
Here are the people who need to stop:
JDK and Scoutking: Stop nitpicking and finding things to bitch about every two pages
People without experience with depression: Don't post here because you cannot possibly be helpful
Actually I'm ready to just suggest r/depression instead of this place because this place is shit
You always seem to want to start an e-fight with me JDK. I'm not telling him to think about sugar and spice and everything nice. I'm telling him to start changing his mindset from "oh, woe is me" to "maybe things aren't as bad as I'm making them." It's not a permanent solution and there are other problems that need addressing, but by doing this he is able to begin controlling his emotions.
Why do you constantly feel the need to bash on anyone who says, "Hey I have a solution because this worked for me."? Do you like forcing your negative thinking onto everyone else?
And you especially, your "advice" isn't productive
Making statements like this:
You don't need meds to get over depression
is probably the worst possible thing to post in here for two reasons
1) depression is a medical condition and sometimes positive thinking alone WON'T work. There are many cases where medication is necessary
2) it makes those people who need medication think they're somehow weak
this thread is not for you in the same way a thread on evolution would not be for a creationist
I'm feeling shit at the moment and I don't know why
Wait, that's a lie. I just hate being incompetent. It makes me feel so worthless and thick.
When I'm not at work, I'm just here in front of the computer. Running to work (because otherwise I'm probably gonna be a bit late) is the only time I feel like a productive member of society.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
I wish, I really fucking wish I had an iron ego, like some people I know. They simply just don't give a single fuck ever about anything. I wish I could just feel in control of my thoughts better.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
Does that make sense?
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
I can't stop thinking about that one time years ago when my friend called me "the dumbest smart person [he had] ever known"

You could try to get a hobby, so when you're not a work you have something to do.
(by hobby, I mean something that gets you out of the house a little. Video games aren't a good hobby)

I have a homemade discussion board that we could use, if you guys wanted to retain the "only fp" vibe. It's not completely done, but registering, logging in, posting, editing, etc all work. Just a thought.

Your contribution is just great.
And you especially, your "advice" isn't productive
Would wallowing in your pity constantly thinking that your life is shit be more productive? How about you at least try some cognitive thinking and get back to me on the definition of "productive."
2) it makes those people who need medication think they're somehow weak
Not once have I ever called someone weak. All my posts have to deal with discipline. Discipline has nothing to do with how strong or weak you are, it has more to do with your willingness to work towards change. If you really take what I am saying as a personal insult to you, then you really need to change your outlook on things. Nothing I've said has been negatively charged, it's just your depression skewing the meaning in your brain to make it look like I'm calling you something negative.

Clinical depression is a medical condition involving chemical imbalances in the brain. Routine depression (feeling sad, in a rut, etc) is about a negative mindset.
This thread is about the former, people with clinical depression don't have a problem with discipline or willpower. You lack some fundamental understandings of the topic you're arguing here.
Also, attacking my mental faculties instead of my argument is probably the #1 childish thing a person can do. Hell, it's not even my argument. It's the medical definition of depression. If you disagree with what I said above you disagree with every licensed psychologist.

Fair enough, an anonymous e-battle over the Internet hasn't gotten anyone, anywhere. I'll leave this thread and let you continue your pity party. Hopefully those drugs eventually work, because for as long as this thread has been around they haven't helped you get much better.

Just had to get those last few snide comments in eh
taking shots at depressed people on the internet makes me feel like a big man that's for sure
[editline]13th September 2011[/editline]
I think this thread should be an environment where people can post to vent about what's bothering them without having to worry about being told they possess a lack of discipline or willpower or made to think that they're somehow weak.
Anyone who is reading the exchange over the last few pages, I really hope this doesn't discourage you from posting here in the future. There are always going to be people like Evilan who will attempt to "help" using misguided methods that do more harm than good, that's a given. But despite what he may have said, the fact that you're able to post about your depression here shows a tremendous amount of courage and willpower and I know that when you're ready, you'll take it further and talk to a professional about it. Remember, Evilan isn't one of those professionals. They won't respond to you the way he does. You'll never be told that you lack discipline by a reputable therapist or psychiatrist. Don't let him discourage you. There are many people out there who won't push their agendas or opinions on you like he does, and you'll find those people. I promise. (If you don't believe me you can add me on steam)
Best of luck

Best of luck
I agree with this, it's pointless to argue about depression. It doesn't help solve anybody's problems. Honestly it feels good just to get your story out a lot of the time, and I don't think we should attack people or judge them too much.
Close friend of mine just tried to kill him/herself. How should I comfort them?
Elaborate why he tried to kill himself? More information is needed.
