There is no white history month because white people do not have a history of freeing themselves from centuries of systemic oppression to celebrate. Remember that it wasn't even 60 years ago that America still had "white people" "coloured people" drinking fountains, and that apartheid was very much a thing in South Africa (of all places!) until the 90s. [editline]29th August 2014[/editline] Racism isn't over just because Fox News tells you it is.
Yep not even 60 years ago where we referred to blacks as "coloured" as if white somehow was the norm but now it's for some reason preferred to say "person of colour" which means exactly the same hehe what a world, am i right!? [editline]30th August 2014[/editline]
it's entirely different to say something like "i don't find most asian/black/white/hispanic wo/men attractive" than it is to say "i would never date them" reason being is that the first evokes the specif reason - that you're simply not physically attracted to their characteristics, whereas the second is so vague that it can very easily mean a huge variety of things. even then it's a bit iffy because you're effectively saying that all people of a specific ethnicity look the same, which isn't true. there's significantly more variation within than between.
Tbh I don't see the problem if you actually honestly think most *ethnic* doesn't look attractive to you. Taste is subjective and if you just can't do it then it's not really your fault.

Which is fine IMO.

Coloured was historically used to describe Black Americans specifically, most of the time in a negative way.
It's good to see them painting anyone who has a problem with affirmative action as a racist then proceed to bring up a separate phenomena that happened some fifty years ago.
It's good to see them painting anyone who has a problem with affirmative action as a racist then proceed to bring up a separate phenomena that happened some fifty years ago.
Except that "seperate phenomena" underscores the idea that many Black Americans couldn't get a good education (and even today a lot of Black Americans can't get a good public education). That meant (along with other factors such as white flight and being excluded from some neighborhoods) could't generate nearly as much family wealth as white families which limited their children's options for education also.

Just teach "black" history like you would any other part of history.

Which is fine IMO.
you're both missing the point. in physical characteristics there is significantly more variation within each race than between each race. to identify specific physical traits and attribute them to the races is incorrect from a real world and statistical standpoint.
Evidence from the analysis of genetics (e.g., DNA) indicates that most physical variation, about 94%, lies within so-called racial groups. Conventional geographic "racial" groupings differ from one another only in about 6% of their genes. This means that there is greater variation within "racial" groups than between them. In neighboring populations there is much overlapping of genes and their phenotypic (physical) expressions. Throughout history whenever different groups have come into contact, they have interbred. The continued sharing of genetic materials has maintained all of humankind as a single species. Physical variations in any given trait tend to occur gradually rather than abruptly over geographic areas. And because physical traits are inherited independently of one another, knowing the range of one trait does not predict the presence of others. For example, skin color varies largely from light in the temperate areas in the north to dark in the tropical areas in the south; its intensity is not related to nose shape or hair texture. Dark skin may be associated with frizzy or kinky hair or curly or wavy or straight hair, all of which are found among different indigenous peoples in tropical regions. These facts render any attempt to establish lines of division among biological populations both arbitrary and subjective.
in effect, by stating "i'm not attracted to (ethnicity)" you're more than likely not referring to the skin tone, but to the physical bone structures that make up their face - esp given that our skin colors within races vary wildly thanks to tanning. while this on its face (heh) isn't racist, it fails to understand that there is HUGE genetic variation within each race and that the things that we associate as being stereotypically characteristics of each race, are exactly that. stereotypes. as such, to say you're not attracted to a whole ethnicity is to say that each individual of that ethnicity has those characteristics. which they do not. [editline]30th August 2014[/editline] a sort of visual understanding of this: http://www.understandingrace.org/humvar/race_humvar.html
Black History Month is still an extremely silly concept, which only serves to segregate races further. Just teach "black" history like you would any other part of history.
It serves more as "Here's the stuff that happened and still happens to black people, lets celebrate to the fact people actually stopped to think they're human beings and start fixing shit"
this is material that was new like, 10 years ago
Yet it still applies... sad.
Black History Month is still an extremely silly concept, which only serves to segregate races further. Just teach "black" history like you would any other part of history.
I always disliked the whole 'oh creating safe spaces and acknowledging past events only causes more separation!' because it always sounds like you're trying to pass the blame onto to the group who deserves recognition, as opposed to those either currently causing oppression or have done in the past. Obviously, that's probably not the intention, but that's how it comes across, in my opinion. Like, if you are white and think stuff like Black History Mouth is dumb, take a moment to take into consideration the feelings of other people and understand that the world does not revolve around you.
