Wait do people actually hold the first movie in high regard? It's pretty bad.
HERESY
According to the website, New Zealand wasn't attacked.
Why would they there's nothing there
Its by no means going to be a good movie, but as long as its a fun movie (like the first) that doesn't take itself too seriously, it will probably be okay.
Looks great, I'm not watching it opening night but I'll definitely watch it in theaters.

Looks like Earth gets properly fucked over in this one, here's me betting the movie ends with Humanity becoming like the aliens, living on giant ships roaming the galaxy.
like in prey? we are essentially cattle, put here by a much superior alien race. Every so often us and our resources are collected, but now we fight back.
i didnt really like the look of the trailer but the viral site is really cool tbh

pft they basically do
the macbook is probably alien tech
Masterpiece? Independence Day was hilarious garbage. It was only entertaining for how silly it was.
which is exactly why it's regarded as a masterpiece.
Its by no means going to be a good movie, but as long as its a fun movie (like the first) that doesn't take itself too seriously, it will probably be okay.
To be honest, this looks like its taking itself too seriously.
And then you have like, all the weird tech difference.
People still in normal school buses, HOLY SHIT VTOL SPACE JETS.
I liked that in the first movie, the alien power armor was just a bigger alien
This looks nothing like Independence Day and the trailer is taking itself far too seriously for what is supposed to be the sequel to a decently fun schlock.
I do like the idea of repurposed alien technology though.
[sp]Did they spoil the whole movie with the last seconds of the trailer, where the huge alien ship wreckage, engulfled in flames, falls down into Earth atmosphere?[/sp]
[sp]Unless they dont stick to the old version where all those alien ships had energy shields surrounding them, they just gave away the whole plot: humanity wins once again.[/sp]
I hope not...

The flames are from entering the atmosphere...
The flames are from entering the atmosphere...
Dude, did you see the first movie? The energy shields should interact with the atmosphere and maybe "burn", not the ship outer-structure.
Whatever... it's an Independence cash-n-grab then.
Looks like a decent action/sci-fi flick. I'll catch it when it comes out in theaters.
I do like the idea that they used the alien technology. Seems like a logical step actually. Makes for some cool continuity.

I'm kinda willing to bet the space tech they extracted from the aliens was used almost exclusively by the military.
Where the fuck is Will "Now that's what I call a close encounter" Smith?
Oh noes, now they're going to have to debate which of the independant day movies to play during independence day every year!
Who am I kidding, at least they'll have two options now. (They've been playing independence day every year religiously every independence day around here)
Where the fuck is Will "Now that's what I call a close encounter" Smith?
Killed offscreen due to having the foresight not to feature in such a terrible film.
I'm cool with this movie being a thing, it'll be a dumb, no-brain-required film for sure, but so was the first one, and I still like it, even after seeing it too many times.
Here is the real reason why Will Smith isn't reprising his role.
"Will Smith was supposed to reprise the role of Captain Steven Hiller, but Fox refused to meet his request for a $50 million salary for two sequels."
Wow they killed off Will Smith.

they only killed his character off because when they wanted him in the movie he was "too expensive" to be apart of it. but w/e, i'm okay with them spending more money on the movie itself than spending a quarter of it on him.
Wait I just checked IMDB and Brent Spiner is listed... didn't he die in the first movie?
[sp]Please tell some bullshit space magic happened and the aliens stole his consciousness and made him their chief scientist or leader or something.[/sp]
To put it in perspective; you're all saying a sequel to movie where a 1996 laptop saves the world from highly advanced aliens is going to be bad... , just saying.
The thing that made Independence Day watchable was the intimidation factor of the aliens in their colossal ships IMO. This one doesn't look like it's properly recaptured it. The ships looks like they're meant to be big but they're covered in glowy blue spots and spiky bits that ruin it. They don't look as well designed as the blocky miniatures used in the first film.
But that's just from a trailer. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.
I'll watch it in some years when it will run on TV.
Found the full trailer for the first film as well.

two completely different trailers tonally.
I'm pretty cool with how this is like an all out fight between two races that can go toe to toe with each other
The movie was such a masterpiece because it was -the- action blockbuster, combined with disaster elements were so popular at the time. It also had great characters, and even though it was cheesy there is a reason why it's a milestone. Also probably the best practical special effects in a movie.
This one, looks like it's trying to grab back the people in the later 20's and 30's who saw the movie younger in the theaters. For me, it's working a little bit. Looks a little over the top but I will definitely see it because i loved the first one so much, and since it'snot a pure "reboot" it won't ruin the first one for me.
