Us Aussies are too tough for wimpy helmets
Tell that to the unconscious guy with blood gushing from his face.
Fuck I love footy.
Australian Football is best Football.
Australian Fag League, NRL is where it is at (jokes) I truly tried watching a match of afl but compared to nrl it just seems eeh, but damn those are some big hits.
Most probably have brain damage by the time they turn 40.

Honestly most AFL games don't get those kinds of hits, it's still pretty rough though.
These hits are really rare. Seriously, this is just like a Rugby League biggest hits montage as well. These just look way more insane because the ones getting hit aren't expecting the hit, so they're not prepared for it. [editline]10th May 2012[/editline] Having said that, this sport is fucking excellent to watch and play. And they almost always know that the hits are coming. [editline]10th May 2012[/editline]
Most probably have brain damage by the time they turn 40.
Nope, but there is a large percentage that have issues with their hips and knees. Strangely enough, spinal injury is more common both the rugby codes than AFL.
Nope, but there is a large percentage that have issues with their hips and knees. I prefer AFL over NRL mainly because in NRL 90% of the time playing consists of sweaty roid-monkeys feeling each other up on the ground.
Understandable because most tackles in Rugby tend to be in the midriff, it's no surprise that someone's spine could take an absolute beating.
True. AFL is primarily a running game so torn ACLs, knee, hip and ankle injuries are the most common. It's just, like with any contact sport, there are really bad collisions from time to time.
Tell that to the unconscious guy with blood gushing from his face.
It's not often where you see a hit that bad in AFL. Most injuries are non-head related injuries though, so a helmet wouldn't help much. It's mostly hamstrings, shoulders, knee, foot, groin ect. There is that risk of hurting yourself badly when going in for a mark or a tackle but there are a lot of rules to avoid the most serious collisions. - Eyes on the ball when going for a mark - Cannot tackle above the shoulders - And some more I can't remember off the top of my head While helmets will of course lesson the blows someone receives to the head and can reduce injury, the maneuverability in AFL is very different to NFL and it just wouldn't work. It's like playing basketball with helmets on.
This sport just seems like a bad excuse to just hit people cheaply. All the players most likely have minor brain damage.
THIS is real sports... While the sissies at soccer matches cry cause they slightly touched arms.
THIS is real sports... While the sissies at soccer matches cry cause they slightly touched arms.
You do know the main reason soccer players go down so much is to highlight the foul, it get the referees attention.
Have there ever been any deaths in the AFL? Some of these knock-outs have the possibility of being fatal.
This sport just seems like a bad excuse to just hit people cheaply. All the players most likely have minor brain damage.
Thanks, man. I appreciate it. [editline]10th May 2012[/editline]
Have there ever been any deaths in the AFL? Some of these knock-outs have the possibility of being fatal.
Yes. Plenty. None of them have died on the field, but they've died later of causes from playing.
Thanks, man. I appreciate it.
You're welcome for playing a cheap sport.
Have there ever been any deaths in the AFL?
You're welcome for playing a cheap sport.
Please send me some money so I can sign up for croquet classes. Also, I drive a cheap car with a low safety rating, this is my fault because I have brain damage. Only smart people do expensive things.
THIS is real sports... While the sissies at soccer matches cry cause they slightly touched arms.
Okay, you can watch a sport simply because it involves people hitting eachother but I'd rather watch a sport based on skill.
Okay, you can watch a sport simply because it involves people hitting eachother but I'd rather watch a sport based on skill.
You have never played AFL or rugby :v:
You have never played AFL or rugby :v:
I went to a GPS school, I played rugby, cricket, basketball and soccer. I may have worded it poorly, but I meant I would rather watch a sport based on the merit of skill rather than watching it on the fact that people are hitting eachother. I wasn't suggesting AFL doesn't require skill.
I went to a GPS school, I played rugby, cricket, basketball and soccer.
They offer afl?
They offer afl?
Yes, but it wasn't very big.
I would say American football hits are potentially much more heavy in terms of force because of the sheer size of most football players, that is why they have to wear padding. However, Rugby looks a lot more gritty and hits like these seem more common.
This would make for a great video game using the Natural Motion physics engine. I would actually probably buy it even though I do not like sports very much.
Australia: Go for the people, stay for the blood sport.

It looked pretty cool.

The number of concussions in the NFL actually increased when metal helmets were added, because it allows players to deliver headfirst hits without providing much more protection against concussion. They keep you from fracturing your skull much better than a leather helmet though.
