I remember checking out this DK Book from the school library when I was in Grade School. The cutaway illustrations of the interior flooding as it sank was awesome to me at the time. :v:

my grandfather was an 'expert witness' at the court hearing about whether to keep the titanic underwater or not

I have one of those books, its about shipwrecks.
Anyone been to this?

It's a giant Titanic museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri

I went, and they give you these cards like for roleplaying and such.
My guy was James Witter, a real steward on the Titanic.

When you get to the end of the museum, there's this big wall of names, like the wall of the Vietnam Memorial. It turns out, I died.

Although, the comments on that video made me derp.
"They* should make another Titanic the way it was built."
"
Well it is supposedly the last song played by the Titanic's band.
Oh please, the thread music should totally be "My Heart Will Go On" By Celine Dion. :v:
Apparently I had quite a few family members on the Titanic, all of them died.

Also, the St. Louis Science Center has a Titanic exhibition from time to time and they have cards like that. My person was Mr. Edgar Joseph Meyer, traveling first class to New York to attend the funeral of his father-in-law, Andrew Saks, the founder of Saks Department Store. He ended up 'attending' his own funeral. What is neat about him is that his discoveries in the field of combustion greatly advanced the development of the gasoline engine.
They had an exhibit at the Baltimore Science Center too. It had all the same features. I haven't seen it in a few years though. :smith:
I remember reading that Titanic's collision could have been avoided if they didn't reverse the engines.
The ship had three propellers and the center propeller was located behind the rudder and was not reversable, and because they reversed the engines the center propeller stopped and thus crippled the ship's turning ability. Rudder was too small in the first place, and reducing waterflow made a bad situation worse.
Or, if they smashed into the ice berg dead on, only the first 1 or 2 chambers would have been full of seawater and the ship could have made it to its destination.

I remember seeing that guy in concert once. He said "and now, we're going to play a song from Titanic."
I yelled "YEAH" and it became very awkward, but he laughed and began to play.
Happy April 14th everybody! Today it the 99th anniversary of Titanic's collision with the iceberg, to sink at 2:20 am the following morning.
In honor of the event, I have composed a poem:
*cough*
Ninety nine years ago today,
As Titanic was sailing away,
An iceberg appeared; the crew said "holy shit!"
But it was far too late; it hit.
Rushing in, the water came,
with what gave Titanic international fame
and everyone knew life would not be the same
now having enough lifeboats is no longer a game.
Well, in about 2 hours tops,
Titanic would be forever lost
As star-crossed lovers get chased by ex-cops,
On came the water, making people very pissed off.
Some say gunshots rang out that night
Giving the terrified passengers quite a fright
As the bow went under the sea,
Almost saying "I'll take you all with me."
Pretty soon only the stern was left dry
as the steep slant of the deck sent people flying by
The poop deck was the last stop for many,
although the protection was hardly any.
Suddenly a crash, a bang, a squeal
Titanic's "big ass" was beginning to peel
Unable to withstand the weight of itself
It broke apart, and I can't figure out anything that rhymes with 'itself.'
Fifteen hundred people fell into the sea
But it was far too cold for anyone to see
Any chance of escape
For the boats were coming back very, very late.
Two boats did come back
but they found no one alive
a few were pulled from the water at last
the lucky few from Titanic's final dive.
And now, 99 years later
Titanic is remembered as no ordinary freighter.
The passengers would find it sublime
for it to be the most famous ship of all time.
Thank you very much I'll be here till Saturday
It's just a ship that sank 99 years ago.
If it hadn't sunk it wouldn't be as famous as it is.

That's probably the truth.
You went to WHOI? lucky!
I live very near it.
My uncle had an internship there when he was younger, and I went to some camp there when I was younger.

They had the same thing at a traveling exhibit here once. I survived then died like a year later :v:
Not entirely relevant, but take a look at this:

That's the Olympic AND the Mauretania being scrapped at the same time.
