From the IGN article
But Frank’s a 54-year-old man now -- though he looks like he’s just cracked his 30s, a point Capcom and Microsoft specifically made so players would find it easier to identify with him -- and though story details are scarce, we know Dead Rising 4 takes place 16 years after the events of the first game.
:v: :v: :v:??? Keep in mind that Tj Rotolo (Frank) is actually 50. Maybe they canned him for fresh blood? [editline]15th June 2016[/editline] Source: http://m.ign.com/articles/2016/06/14/e3-2016-dead-rising-4-feels-bigger-bolder-and-bloodier-than-ever I hope IGN is fucking with us
Played it at E3. Game is a lot of fun, but there's some changes that might throw some fans off. Inventory system is completely different. No more inventory slots to scroll through. Instead, X does your melee weapon attacks, right trigger fires your ranged weapon, left bumper throws a throwable weapon, and down on the d-pad uses a healing item. On the plus side, you can pull some sick combos combining melee attacks and instantly pulling a ranged weapon to fire, but on the downside you only have 1 weapon of each type at a time. I think. I'll have to play it again to confirm that part. Combo attacks are now initiated after a number of HITS, instead of KILLS. Certain vehicles also have super attacks that are triggered by reaching a number of hits, and as long as you keep consecutively scoring hits, you can keep the super attack going. The map is still littered with different items, weapons, and food bits that you can pick up and use. Camera is back and you get points for stuff like you did in the old game, and there's unique moments you can capture to score extra PP.
So Frank went from being a lovable goofball to some gruff generic war hero guy? Also, one of the issues in DR2 was that combo weapons made regular weapons obsolete, so you would never really bother making a trip to that one store with katanas and battle-axes in it because you already had 4 pairs of knife gloves on you. This was even worse in DR3 as you could just spawn in combo weapons in your safehouse, without even having to find the right components and combine them.

"Thanks Obama" isn't something a serious guy would say. The thing that made Frank work was despite being somewhat serious he was just a regular guy in a crazy situation trying to make sense of it. He wasn't ever intending to be the hero that saved everyone he just wanted to get the truth and help people if possible. I get that post DR1 they wanted to make it look like the fame went to his head but this Frank is just so damn forced.

I saw the guy playing pull out a different melee weapon and different throwables from an inventory wheel.
Why does every developer think taking a selfie with dead/dieing people is the way to make your character seem "wacky n fun"
Because it was a thing in DR2 Off the Record and it was pretty fun to do, but Frank himself was a different character compared to DR4
The gameplay looks really good but Frank sounds, looks, and acts so off that I wonder why they didn't just make up a new character. It's like Splinter Cell Blacklist all over again.
Alright, so let's compare. Frank in Dead Rising. Frank in OTR/Case West. You can at least make out a decent resemblance between the two. You can clearly tell that it's Frank but that his alcoholism and age caught up with him. I mean, it's not perfect, but still. Oh, and he sounds like Frank. Frank in DR4. ...who the fuck is this guy? He looks and sounds nothing like Frank.
Idk why you guys are surprised, Dead Rising kinda stared going downhill after the case west standalone game and they kinda threw the whole story and subtlety out the window. If you're expecting anything like the originals that wasn't carried over to 3 then you're going to be disappointed.
Is the mall back in full capacity?
Wasn't available in the demo, but the dev team member confirmed to me that it's a fully rebuilt Willamette Mall.

The series literally turned into Meme Rising. The first was dark and gritty with some genuinely creepy moments and went downhill really fast with Case West. Every Psycho in DR3 except Albert is a fucking joke. Nothing in this game feels dangerous to you I mean a fucking ExoSkeleton? To get to that level of Power in the first you had to play a lot and basically know all about the mall. This is actually kinda sad. It turned into a "lol so random" Zombie sandbox where survival is piss easy.
Shame thinking about the weird turn the series took from having to make due with whatever you had lying around in a mall with that earworm of a jingle spreading atmosphere in the background. There was just something more special about going into the stores in DR1 using things that was more down to earth felt like it was more visceral and with impact, the joke weapon combos like the exosuit just seem too wacky and disconnected to what's going on for me. Including the main characters that seem to enjoy zombie killing too much almost like they're trying too hard to connect to the player really puts me off. I'm probably still going to enjoy DR4 for what it is, just weird thinking that flawless sense on tone DR1 had still hasn't been reproduced.

Why do they insist on making the player a killing machine? The first Deadrising was entertaining because Frank wasn't a badass and it took a while to make him one. The player had to get better at the game by knowing where secrets were and learning tactics for new enemies. Also, Frank died super fucking easily. Dead Rising 1 plays like Dark Souls. Dead Rising 2 or above plays like Saint's Row.
That's... actually a fair point. DR1 had the battle with the truck feel like an absolute nightmare, but if that boss was in DR3, the convicts would be pathetically easy.
For those who are concerned with bringing the original voice actor back for Frank West, there is this petition: https://www.change.org/p/capcom-terence-j-rotolo-as-frank-west-for-dead-rising-4?recruiter=77370980&utm_source=share_for_starters&utm_medium=copyLink Yeah, Frank West isn't Frank West anymore without T.J. Rotolo.
Dead Rising 1 plays like Dark Souls. Dead Rising 2 or above plays like Saint's Row.
This is so true it's ridiculous Why couldn't DR stick to its roots. Completing the game with the correct ending ([sp]battle on the tank iirc?[/sp]) was satisfying as fuck, I remember it being a proud gaming achievement. I also remember how threatening the zombies were when you were low level - the difficulty simulates Frank's inexperience with them to start out with, then as you level you get more skills/health/power and eventually you're kicking footballs at them, performing wrestling moves and dicking around rather than treating them as a threat. The issue with the sequels is that they took this as the starting point rather than something to be achieved. Other stuff, like the save mechanics, was harsh, but ultimately added to that rich sense of dread as well as time ebbing away as part of the side mission system. More stuff that didn't fully carry over to the later games I'm sure there's a few video essays on the subject
Yeah but DR2 was the sweet spot for the actual gameplay. DR1's mechanical movement, and actions, were really not good and enjoyable. They made the game feel clunky and difficult to control in the worst of ways. DR2 wasn't an amazing game in terms of story and the rest of it, but DR1's lackluster gameplay really broke that game for me.
Fuck the lack of checkpoints though. DR2 is decent but I can't count the amount of times I lost up to an hour's progress as I accidentally found a psychopath or died shortly before a save point.
There was a rumor saying DR4 is actually a film based off the First game, or the plot was they were making a movie and it went wrong. Either way, we might not be playing as Frank, but as the actor who plays him.

The idea is cool, but damn I really wanted to see more Frank.

Every Psycho in DR3 except Albert is a fucking joke.
haha, what? dr1 had no creepy moments. you could take pictures of zombie panties for erotica points, you can flip kick zombies heads off, punch them in the stomache and pull their guts out, all the bosses were goofy as hell, it was japanese as fuck. the problem is that it was handed over to western devs after the first, and none of them can capture that weird hammy-but-serious tone the japanese gave it. it just goes full ham and loses that weird japanese charm, as well as arcadey gameplay the first had. i don't know why they keep trying to give frank more realistic, weighty movement, while ironically taking all the weight away from his melee moves? (disembowel a zombie in the first, you actually feel like you're giving an impactful gut punch). why couldn't frank have done the movie himself? unless this is in the future (which i doubt because it would really disconnect this game from the in-universe plot) and frank is dead of old age
why couldn't frank have done the movie himself? unless this is in the future (which i doubt because it would really disconnect this game from the in-universe plot) and frank is dead of old age
The rumor is it's supposed to be many years after DR3 so frank would be significantly older if not dead. Even if this is all true that doesn't escape the fact that the game has done a 180 in terms of tone compared to the first.
