I'd say my price cap would be around $600. I will still be under 21 by the time I get a place, and I am planning to go through a private sale. No close family or friends have any firearms experience let alone a license.

if you can find someone willing to let go of their FN FNX-9, that's what I'd do
Glocks are a good choice. Easy to use, reliable, cheap. I'd go the full sized version if you're not carrying it.
9mm if your a new shooter. 357SIG, .40S&W, 10mm Auto (my favourite) or 45ACP if you're more experienced.

If you don't ahve much experience I'd suggest a pump/semi shotgun over a handgun. Much easier to use and aim properly (particularly under stress), while being much more powerful

I don't know anything about ohio gun laws, but if it's like the rest of the country, all you need to do is fill out and pass a backround check and they'll hand the pistol over to you.

Please don't buy a polymer lower. Especially if it's for NFA. Do you really want to spend $200 on a lower that could crack due to any number of reasons, including recoil from firing, or popping the rear pin and dropping the delta ring on the magwell?

I think it'll be fine. I don't buy into the whole polymer being weak thing, and the only part of the lower that gets any significant pressure is where the buffer tube goes in.
So I picked up a Palmetto AR-15 (added Magpul accessories and a Sight-Mark red-dot/magnifier) and a SPAS-12 (The thing's like 4ft long, so not many closeup shots)

FN SCARs have polymer lowers, and nobody ever complains about those, and everything else FN has made in the past 20 years has been mostly polymer
the G36 is perfectly fine if you ignore the melty trunion
I've seen absolutely no reason to believe that polymer lowers are bad.

Which is also the thinnest part of the gun, which means that the forces applied to it will be magnified.

Saw an M1 carbine with a little scope on it in a store I visit often. There wasn't anything particularly special about the thing aside from it having the kind of scope you'd put on a .308 or something. Kind of odd for such a short little carbine.

They weren't AKs. They were Vz.58s because they are easier to buy.
