I appreciate it but it wouldn't be now. If I do do this, it'd be like Christmas time when I'm home so I could sell it and then buy the M1 when I'm home because the gun shows are way bigger down there.
Florida, right?
yeah I think im gonna have to say no to the PTR, its just too much for the kind of budget im on now (i dont have one)
I really think i might sell my rpk
[editline]15th November 2012[/editline]

Looks like SGAmmo has .30 Carbine for about 34 cents a round, which is comparable to .223
That is pretty much the price range for Korean or later build M1 carbine.
Best quality makers:
Inland Division (General Motors)
Winchester
Underwood
Rock-Ola
Quality HMC
Irwin-Pederson
National Postal Meter
IBM (the one and only)
Mid level quality:
Auto Ordnance
Plainfield Machine
Springfield Armory
Low level:
Universal
When looking at a carbine to buy, you want to check the barrel, the muzzle wear, the bolt and the trigger assembly. Also make sure that the lug that screws into the wood stock at the rear of the receiver is tight (mine is a bit loose, like it's kinda stripped out).
Real deal WW2 carbines will have just a fixed aperture on the rear of the receiver, and will not have a bayonet lug. Korean and later will have a rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation, and will probably have a bayonet lug on it.
Make sure the magazine(s) are in good condition, and compress/extend fully. They will not lock the bolt back on last round, but the Korean made ones do. The curve on the follower will be flat on the rear if it does that. But once you remove the mag, the bolt will slam forward unless you pull it back the rest of the way and depress the pin in the charging handle.
You forgot Saginaw SG. And you forgot Iver-Johnson from the commercial makes.
Also, for the love of god stay away from Auto Ord.
Our local Gander Mountain has a nice condition General Motors M1 carbine with bayonet for 700. If I wasn't saving up for my trip to Munich I would buy it.

I knew I was missing one or two. I pulled most of the names from a website that only listd the GI makes.
The other thing to remember is that about 99% of the M1 Carbines went through the rearsenal program, therefore will have the later features like the bayo lug and adjustable rear sight. Most of the "original WWII" carbines you see are put together by collectors. Anyways most of the later features started showing up in early 1945 so technically as long as it doesn't have a potbelly stock and the type 3 rear sight it's "WWII correct"

Is the bayonet handle leather, or wood/plastic? The former is very hard to find in good condition.
-If you shop around you can probably find an Inland for under $600.
-Winnies are gonna cost more just because there's people who collect just Winchesters.
-Irwin-Pedersons cost the most simply because there's so few of them, it's ironic because there are so few because Irwin-Pederson lost their contract due to ever single one of their carbines failing to pass spec.
-Rock-Ola and IBM also collect a bit of a premium just due to name.
but selling my rpk :(
BUT M1 CARBINE
[editline]16th November 2012[/editline]
Here you can look at my NPM C:

there'd be 3 m1 carbine owners here I GATTA STAND OUT MAN
Damn, so jealous of you guys with your M1 Carbines
Well I've been doing some enquiring today. Trying to find out what the Australian Defence Force does with its surplus and expired ammunition. My investigations have turned up Australian F1 5.56x45mm ball ammunition for sale in the US, at a price much cheaper than anything we pay in Australia (the cheapest 5.56x45mm ammo is crappy Russian made Wolf stuff, at about 55c a round), suggesting it's not destroyed and that it would be cheaper than the 40c or so per round it's being sold for in the US.
So I found a government department whose job is to dispose of defence equipment. I shot them an email, got a response back. Turns out that to acquire anything I would need to put in a tender through a business when they come up for disposal, and that I'd need to get several hundred thousand rounds at once (no shit). So I'll need to convince a dealer to try get the ammunition going for disposal and do some sort of massive group buy.
Fuck the ammo prices here
Who needs to stand out when you could have an M1 Carbine?
there'd be 3 m1 carbine owners here I GATTA STAND OUT MAN
Build a ballista that launches AK's.
I'm [SUB]financially [/SUB]dangerous when I'm in a gunny mood. I just closed a deal to buy that M1 carbine this weekend :P
jesus where do you get the money?
Insurance check from my totalled car. I'll probably end up taking it to a gunshow and reselling it.
oh yeah i forgot
is there anything left?

You gotta love insane people and their panicking towards the supposed end of an America that never existed.
there'd be 3 m1 carbine owners here I GATTA STAND OUT MAN
I got an RPK too though sooo
Is the bayonet handle leather, or wood/plastic? The former is very hard to find in good condition.
I think it was plastic, didn't look at it too much.
I knew I was missing one or two. I pulled most of the names from a website that only listd the GI makes.
What about International Harvester Company? I REALLY want an IHC M1 Garand (I live on a farm...)
IHC only made Garands, not Carbines.
[editline]16th November 2012[/editline]
All this talk of carbines makes me want another one. I think I'll get a Saginaw, since I'm from Michigan and all
What about International Harvester Company? I REALLY want an IHC M1 Garand (I live on a farm...)
I'd say they are pretty good, I have one by them made in '53.
