If the barrel's ok that's usually a failure outside the chamber, what was going on when it happened?
remarkably, by some divine miracle, both my friend and I made it out unscathed.
I'm going over all the parts now, and the receiver is definitely done for sure, and now it's looking like the op-rod might bent too. The rec is p. badly warped so now I'm worried the barrel threads might be damaged and prevent it from breeching up correctly.
What exactly happened?
If the barrel's ok that's usually a failure outside the chamber, what was going on when it happened?
I'm almost positive that the failure occurred after the round discharged, sometime during extraction.
I'm honestly not entirely sure what happened. The round discharged properly and the rifle cycled properly and chambered a new round. Immediately following firing there was a vent of gasses out of the top of the receiver and smoke started pouring out.

In a related story, my Garand blew up today.

Got some clearer pics so we can take a closer look?
I have heard nothing but bad things from owners. Guns that won't cycle on anything but the heaviest ammo, with the gas adjustment full open.
Not to mention that, as a Ruger, and a piston gun, it's ridiculously expensive.

For $1400 you can get an entry level AR and a damn fine optic to put on top of it.
Guess it's just me then, I've had nothing but good times with my Ruger, put all sorts of loads through it and it fired em all no problem, only difference was the vertical impact point on the target.

The other weird thing is that I've checked all my brass and there's nothing out of the norm, so it wasn't a slamfire and didn't fire out of battery. I honestly have no fucking clue what happened.
I have had this problem ever since I bought my SKS, I never noticed it when I bought it but I noticed that the gas tube wiggles a bit, so I took it off and I seen this:
[thumb]http://i.cubeupload.com/dzwOz8.jpg[/thumb]
Apparently someone had the bright idea to take an angle grinder to it. It has never given me any problems after the thousands of rounds put through it, but since I want to use it for hunting I want it to rattle as little as possible. Is there any way I can temporarily fix the rattling without changing the gas tube? (heard its a pain in the ass to change top handguards.)
Another thing is the guy apparently sand blasted the bolt carrier and painted the bolt cover. Now normally this wouldn't bother me too much but over the years it became brown. (maybe dust or some shit getting caught in it). Anyway I want to revert it back to its glorious shiny finish, what would be the best way to do so?

Sad to say, I thing replacing your gas tube is the only solution to that situation.
As for your bead blasted bolt and painted bolt cover, I'd try chemical strippers. You might have to just polish up the bolt on a buffing wheel
if you want to be a super-redneck, you can probably find some sort of putty to put in the gaps the gas tube has.
obviously as a temporary solution.

Without taking out my Soviet SKS and stripping it, I vaguely remember my gas tube end looking exactly the same. It's slightly loose too but it's never bothered me, nor has it ever caused any misfires or anything. I just figured it was meant to fit loose like the AK gas tube. I don't think it's that big of a deal if it's not causing reliability issues.
As for the bolt carrier, a buffing wheel will work fine. Though I believe the black paint is original. The bead blasting may be as well, just stained brown from cosmoline. I'm not too sure about variations in Soviet refinishing techniques though so I may be wrong.
Personally I'd just leave it alone as the brownish red color reminds me of the Soviet Red SVT-40 bolts that look oh so sexy.

Does the action and all the working parts still function? Could always take it to the range, load it up and fire it from a safe distance with a piece of string... see what happens

I can't tell if the receiver is warped as I've never handled an M1
holy shit that scared the shit out of me.
i fired and then i just felt a ton of hot gas wash over me, almost felt like a slap, something else felt like it slapped my hand (wood splitting), and a bunch of smoke poured out of the receiver. I just said "ow" and then kinda looked over at felix, who was a lane over spotting for me. i just stared at him until he came over. he didnt freak out so i figured i wasnt bleeding anywhere, and then i started to check myself for wounds. felix just kinda said "UH" and took the garand from my hands and turned it and i noticed the big ass split in the stock. i was just like
"oh shit"
then he took out the trigger group and the stock just fell apart.
im just glad my hand didnt explode or a piece of wood shrapnel didnt stab me in the neck.
our theory is that because it was a mismatched receiver that wasnt bedded properly, we think it put extra stress on the stock.
Trying to register with Gunbroker, but they are asking me why because I'm a foreign user. So I have to write an email explaining why I want to register just to buy cases and slings and such.

I registered on gunbroker several years back, guess they didn't have that requirement back them
So was at work and another private found a zombie Field Manual.

seriously man, I would be in tears if I had an m1 blow up on me

not because of the pain

just because it's an m1
At this point I'm just happy we weren't hurt.
I do have to buy a new rifle though, the gun is not cost effective to repair at this point
Thats a real shame. Always sucks seeing pretty guns like M1's getting destroyed.

Wait, so you can't just buy a new receiver, strip the old gun of everything you can use, and then just order everything you need to replace?
I was thinking less repair and more salvage.

Costs probably the same due to the extent of the damage.

You could keep the rifle for parts and buy one of the CMP M1 Garands for almost half off.

I think you have to be a member first in order to buy however.
Do you already have a club you can join that's CMP affiliated and are you approved by CMP as disciplined enough? If not, legally they can't sell you their rifles.
On the plus side You can have the rifle shipped straight to your door instead of an FFL since they double as an FFL, and if you're having trouble finding a club they do have a nifty search tool. I joined the club that is ran by [sp]/k/[/sp].

What are good optic brands for a rimfire gun? Hopefully getting a ruger 10/22 Soon, I was gonna get a 10/22 "Tactical" Low Profile mount by utg (so i could use ironsights too) and put a scope on it. I was looking at a nikon prostaff 3-9x40 rimfire, But it seems pricey. I'm new to firearms myself, what brands and or scopes would you choose? Thank you!
really just about anything works on a .22 as long as the mount is good. It takes some real shit to jump around from that little bit of recoil
