Can someone school me on AR-15 barrels and why they're tapered? I don't understand why it's thicker/thinner at some lengths of the barrel.

To lighten the weight, conserve on metal, to allow the front sight post sufficient metal to be tapped on, and various other reasons.
That's an A1 styled barrel, called a pencil barrel, they're the thinnest that you can get. After the A1 they switched to thicker barrels.

Ideally your rifle barrel would be as thick as your arm, it would be exceptionally accurate and could sustain a a lot of rapid firing before overheating, but unfortunately that would make for a very heavy rifle. So basically they make the barrel as thin as possible for the purpose you're using it.

Does anyone know why the designed military blanks to produce so much muzzle flash and soot? To me it just seems unrealistic to have blanks on exercises that light up the fucking night like a supernova and produce so much soot that you have to constantly clean your weapon
