Not my picture but I just got one a week or so ago, it's a H&R Model 121 16 gauge. Going out to test it for the first time tomorrow.
That looks pretty awesome, isn't 16 gauge really uncommon though? I thought most shotguns were 12g, 20g or .410.
Oh look, an Architecture student who thinks they have it hard.
Ah Engineering...
Different kind of hard trust me, I have tons of Engineering friends.
Oh yes....let us have some "range" time...
keep your gun pointed downrange buddy ;)

I suppose it might be depending on where you are. Here it's definitely not the norm, but it's still fairly readily available

Pretty cheap too. Not sure if the prices are greatly different with shotgun ammo in CA but I got a box of 25 shells for $10 (comparing that to the 12 gauge at double that cost here).
Why not make a bolt-action shotgun instead? Surely that'd be easier to do and more reliable than a lever-action.
As trooper pointed out, they already exist. They also don't have the same rate of fire.
I do want a bolt-action shotgun though, want to make a nice scoped slug gun with it

Last I checked, here in MI they run about $8/box, so about the same. 12ga is fairly inexpensive here though, and 20ga is dirt cheap

We had the same shotgun except it was 20ga for our hunters safety class. Do you have to line up the bolt to close it correctly, and do you have to pull back on the bolt pretty hard to open it all the way? The one they had was a piece of shit (at least the bolt was).

Went to a gun show that had like 20 minutes left till it closed, nearly all of the vendors left besides one.

Pardner 12ga. He had it for 140$, but I haggled him down to 125$. Only has like 20 rounds shot through it.

I've got a coin jar saving up so I can get a nice little single shot like that.
What do you guys think of Bore Snakes? I have one for my .410 and my dad got one for his .30-30 lever action rifle.

I use it on my .410 and it seems to clean it well without any harm. Though it's hard to pull through because of my tapered barrel.

Just got back from shooting it, the bolt's pretty damn good and easy to open, and it has surprisingly little recoil. The only real bad thing I can say about it is that the extractor either isn't working or is just plain bad, when you open it the shell just rolls out instead of coming out on it's own.

I've always trusted a good solid brass jag more than anything else.
uhm........
boresnakes and regular rods have COMPLETELY different purposes
if you're seriously prancing about thinking rods are that much superior then you're so wrong it's not even funny

I use a boresnake and cloth patches/cleaning rod.

my sister aka ms. "guns are bad" liked it.
did i wake up on bizarro earth or something?
Alright guys, let's talk long range shooting.
I'm aiming for a long range setup. I've got a rifle I've been paying off and should be mine soon. It's a savage 110 in 300WM. Very nice rifle. Now, I'm aiming to hit out to over a mile with it. Does this sound like an ideal setup so far for shooting over a mile?

I usually boresnake first then run a couple patches through

.300 Win Mag can do a mile but I'd rather have .416 Barrett or .408 Chey Tac. .408 is still supersonic at 1.3 miles

I'd rather not cry every time I send a bullet going downrange. Money would fly everywhere every time I shot it.
I'm aiming for a similar setup-

I'd just use it as an excuse to start reloading, personally
I reload, but mainly 30 cal stuff. I shoot mostly .308, 300WM, and 300 Blackout. I stick with those because I've got a ton of the components.
man you like .30 cal almost as much as I do
Not judging you or anything, in fact I applaud anyone who's able to make a 1mi shot, but when on earth are you ever going to shoot something a mile away?
Not judging you or anything, in fact I applaud anyone who's able to make a 1mi shot, but when on earth are you ever going to shoot something a mile away?
practically never, but you'd be lying if you said steel gongs a mile out are boring
So what does anyone know about Simpson Ltd. as a place to purchase firearms from? I'm looking to pick up a K-31 and condition matters a lot (mostly the bluing and bore condition), and the site gives a lot of info on both of those. I can pick one up with an excellent bore and 80% blue for a little shy of $300 not including shipping and FFL.
You might be okay on the K31, but alot of the guns they have on there are overpriced.

I'm not saying that would be boring at all. I just mean the longest range I've ever seen is 1000yards. I honestly can't even think of an opportunity to shoot out to a mile
man you like .30 cal almost as much as I do
I love .30 cal stuff, great bullet all around.
But shooting out that far is just a blast. I want a new long range setup, but I'm wondering where to go from here. The Savage should be a great gun to go with, correct? I've never owned one, but everyone has been telling me to go with it for what I want. I also need some glass, preferably under $1000. I have looked at some vortex stuff, and their seems pretty good from what I've read...
Personally, I'm partial to Trijicon. I think you can get a 2.5-10x56 for about $1k

Personally, I'd take my favourite long action (In your case the Savage, but I personally like the R700 action), rebarrel it with a benchrest grade barrel with a suitable contour (make your choice between weight and stiffness, take a look at the military M24 and M40 barrel contours), chamber it for a 30 or 338 cal magnum round, spend at least $2000 on a scope, put a McMillan Tac A5 stock on it and free float the barrel
That's how I'd do it, though if I was shooting a Mile I'd want at least .338 cal so I could get some nice heavy projectiles, say 250 grain+

Because you can?
I shit you not, that was almost my exact plan at the start. I had an older remington 700 and planned to base the whole setup off the action, but I traded it in and got the savage for a 100$ difference. It's set up with everything I want, but I'm wondering what else I would need to do to it for it to reach on out there.
I do have another remington 700 in 300wm though. I bought a remington 700P an got an AICS stock for it, but that's another side project. I'm focusing on the savage right now.

We have like minds...
I've heard about something where they make sure the bolt face, the chamber and the locking lugs line up properly, then grind them flat, but to me it sounds like a gimmick, never know though
