Scrapping my previous plans. Gonna save up some more and buy a Browning HiPower in .40 S&W.
Curious on what handguns are good at 300$ or less. Nothing too specific, just for use at target range.
I would personally look at a Ruger Mark III.
If you like .22lr, I've heard this is an OK pistol: link You could always go with a classic Tokarev, or a modern production of one in 9mm
Love the tokarev especially, any other reccomendations?
Love the tokarev especially, any other reccomendations?
If you can find one right now, you can always get a Nagant revolver for around 100$. You won't find ammo for it at your local gun store, but you can find surplus for it online for a reasonable price. But like Mr. Foster said, a Ruger Mark III is never a bad choice (I knew I was forgetting something from my list)
Also looking at a store tomorrow, so I'll remember these. Any specific brands to look out for, or avoid?
Avoid Taurus. FN and CZ are good. Ruger's are alright aswell.
Sig Sauers are pretty good in my experience. Hi points have ~100$ 9mms, but I wouldn't buy one.
Also looking at a store tomorrow, so I'll remember these. None of the shops around here carry them, nor will they buy them. If you were to go above your price range a little, I would probably avoid Taurus. That is about all I can think of at the moment.
Also looking at a store tomorrow, so I'll remember these.
taurus bad overall? or is it just their low-end guns
Taurus = low-end period. They had a few Raging Bulls at one point that were half-way decent, but for the most part everything they have is cheaply-made Brazilian outsourcing. This is sad too, because Brazil is home to the IMBEL factory, which arguably makes some of the best steel frames in the world. The IMBEL factory is the factory that Springfield Armory uses for their 1911s. Some of the less expensive models (G.I., Mil-Spec, Range Officer) are assembled at the IMBEL factory, but for the most part Springfield's high-end 1911s are made in IMBEL and assembled at Springfield's headquarters in Illinois. If you aren't familiar with Springfield, they are known as one of the top dogs in the 1911 world. They are right up there with Colt, Les Baer, Wilson, etc.
Friend owns a Taurus sub compact and says for the price you get a great value
My grandpa got a Taurus knock-off of an m9 that didn't shoot for shit
I could be persuaded to by a Taurus revolver for range work only, but I would never buy one of their semi autos, their reputation is just so poor.
Interesting to hear all this about the Taurus 92s. My dad has one of the Taurus 92s but it's older. He loves it and it shoots great.
My little brother convinced my dad to buy a Tuarus Beretta 92 clone for $300. It's reliable, but everything feels loose and the hole drilled through the slide for the rear sight is skewed and because of that it ripped out of the metal. The sight is now Loctighted on
Beretta 92 is best 92.
I could be persuaded to by a Taurus revolver for range work only, but I would never buy one of their semi autos, their reputation is just so poor.
I personally would rather spend the extra money to buy something nicer.
Fucking O'Malley... If he gets his way it's going to get real expensive and difficult to enjoy firearms in Maryland.
You've caught my interest in so many ways. Mind throwing some blueprints if you've got any?
Haven't got any finished plans for it, I just tend to pick at it every now and then when I feel like it. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/ZR311i7.jpg[/img_thumb] That's the general idea anyway. Estimated it would cost $100 in materials, most of that being a .45 rifled barrel blank from GM and take roughly a week to make from scratch. Sure is fun to use in ArmA 2 anyway, got a whole bunch of em I drew up and put in.
Well when you get the plans chunked out, be sure to toss them our way for educational purposes! We all love something new to learn about once and awhile :v:
Raptor, can I just say you are the reason any form of gun ban would never work.
Should make the bolt handle thinner and the slot for it thinner so you don't get as much dirt and such in the action
Raptor, can I just say you are the reason any form of gun ban would never work.
It'd be very simple to build really, anyone with some hand tools and a drill press would be able to make that gun, and short of a drum it could be modified to accept any number of magazines or use a pistol caliber barrel from another gun. Everything is either pinned, dovetailed or welded. Not only that but there's only three parts that need be anything better than 1018 mild steel, the barrel, mainspring and mag release spring.
Should make the bolt handle thinner and the slot for it thinner so you don't get as much dirt and such in the action
Be a real pain to do that on the model itself at this point.
Going to a gunshow in Arizona tomorrow. I have a budget of $285. Given realistic prices, what's the most expensive thing I should be paying for? Confusing question, but with AWB in the air fueled by the past gun scare, prices will be all over. I'm mainly looking for a milsurp rifle, or shotgun.
-snip-
Quick question... Do you possibly have your own designs for a cheap but effective bolt or semi-auto rifle?
Rome. I been reading the thread a good bit and I noticed at least 2 from GA.
Damn, none of you guys are near North East Georgia... Good to know more of you guys are in Georgia though!
We should have a Georgia (or south east?) meet up some day.
