Would the M1 and M1A1 Thompsons be lighter?
My grandfather lugged one of those through the Pacific, he and his squad always complained about it's weight, they all traded out for M1 carbines first chance they got.
Half the weight and 5x the effective range.
I'd probably do that too.

The m1a1 was .2lb's lighter than the M1928A1 variant.
It's 10.6Lb's empty (m1a1).
Fun little toy to be carrying around all day.
Though, since it's so fucking heavy and is only firing a pistol cartridge.
It has very low recoil, even on fully automatic.

not by much. He was a Ranger so he needed to be carrying as little as possible. Carrying around a 10 pound SMG that fired a .45 was out of the question, so M1 carbines were the obvious choice. Only time he used a Thompson was in the urban areas on Manila.
Fuckin' 10 pounds for a goddamn SMG.

Just shy of the muzzle.
Aw man, that's poop. I guess you could cut it down anyway and use it as a straight-pull bolt.
On the topic of Thompsons I shot an automatic one not too long ago. I tried to have my dad record a video of it but he recorded everything up to me shooting it. I found it to be actually quite controllable, even more so than a UMP .45. I felt like the UMP was very "choppy" with it's recoil while the Thompson was smooth and fast. I could dump a 20 round magazine all within a man sized target at 25 yards. The only gun I was able to top that with was (of course) an MP5.

You pump the foregrip like a super shorty and it cycles the bolt of the Garand.
M1 Garand Obrez, courtesy of 10 minutes of boredom and MS Paint.
Just bought a beautiful RC K98, now for the 4 hour round-trip to the shop selling it.

I want one. Hopefully there's someone importing H&R's single shots to Australia....
Suddenly I want one
More like pretty terrible rifles
More like pretty decent rifles until AAAMURRICAH fucked up their reputation
(Norwegian Master Race owner here, 6.5x55 5 lyfe)
Seriously though, the Krag is a good rifle, but the americans did fuck it up.
Here's why:
Rimmed cartridges
Bad instructions
Rimmed cartridges make it so you have to be neat when loading the gun, whereas the Norwegians just dump a load of delicious 6.5 into the mag start shooting.
Bad instructions: The americans wanted the magazine cutoff, so that standard use would be using the rifle as a single-shot gun, but having the magazine available for when the shit hits the fan.
The Spanish and their Mausers? They just used the whole magazine like you should.
I saw a krag misfire. It was amurricah'd though.
Yes clearly the flaws of the rifle had absolutely nothing to do with it's single locking lug.
Also, the Krag was initially designed with a magazine cutoff, the US didn't add that.

Misfires are 99% due to bad ammunition, not the gun itself
americano es numero uno

With proper ammo the single locking lug isn't an issue.
Still stupid to use the cutoff.
It's a good gun, but it really doesn't deserve the bad reputations that it has.
Proper ammo meaning light loads
Still no problem hitting a man sized target 500 meters away with irons.
Norwegian 6.5x55 for the Krag is rated to a maximum 350 MPa. Swedish 6.5x55 is rated for 380 MPa and is almost 400 fps faster
Yep, but my point is that the Krag is not as bad as some people claim it is. I like my krags, been a while since I've shot them though.
Not being as bad as some people claim =/= great rifle
[editline]28th January 2013[/editline]
If the Krag was invented 10 years earlier it would have been great for its time, but it was already obsolete when it was invented.
I need to hit up some local gun stores. Thinking about getting a Savage MKII, and if somewhere local has a decent price I might be able to get it there instead of online and dealing with FFLs. That'd be nice.
Prob going to grab the MKII F, one with accutrigger.
Hoping I find something worthwhile. The gun show I went to last weekend had one, but it was non-accutrigger and I'd rather comparison shop, considering the shop selling it is not too far from me.
Man, the New Orleans Police Department is about to be facing a shit storm before long. There was a recent incident at a Whole Foods Market where a person open carrying his pistol was grabbed behind the neck, and his gun taken from his holster by a police officer, without being informed of what was happening. He was then forced to the back of the store and detained. Open carrying, and carrying in a store is perfectly legal in Louisiana. What the officer did however was very illegal.
The Whole Fords Market did have a no firearms policy, but there were no signs posted. Even so, with signs posted, they are not enforced by law. The only time anything can be enforced is if he would have been asked to leave, and then he refused to leave. However, none of that occurred. The officer had no legal right in the state of Louisiana to disarm him, or detain him. Basically, the charges are assault and illegal detainment. The guy it happened to has pictures of the store entrances showing no signs posted, has the security footage of the incident from the store, and he had the encounter in the back of the store recorded on his phone.
Multiple lawyers were jumping at the chance to take the case, and he has already chosen one. He is suing the police department, as well as the store because the store hired the officer to represent them.
HAHAHAHA. WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY HIRE THE OFFICER TO REPRESENT THEM!?

I can't wait for my tax return to come through, I'm also hitting up the gun shops. Still torn on buying an older surplus rifle (love me some surplus rifles) or a new rifle though
Speaking of the bar and WW2.
Handled a thompson M1928A1 for the first time yesterday.
And fucking wow.
I was not expecting that thing to be so heavy.
Wasn't expecting it to be heavier than a loaded m4.
Hell, it's even heavier than an AK47.
The thing is solid steel and wood. I can't believe it weighs as little as it does. (Slight sarcasm.) But no joke; the internal mechanism is pure steel and is larger than that of an AK, so it doesn't surprise me. The Garand was remarkably light, I thought, for as much wood and steel as it has.
HAHAHAHA. WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY HIRE THE OFFICER TO REPRESENT THEM!?
Anytime a police officer or security guard is paid for security detail, they are representing that establishment. In the case of police officers, their department does not pay them for security detail, the actual place they do the detail at pays them. Security details are also done on an officer's day off. It's basically extra pay for them, if they choose to do it. If they choose to do it, they are representing the establishment as well as their department.
