Good news, bad news, and more good news... The Good news: We got an all original Springfield 1903 from 1915 that was actually used in WWI, and it is beautiful! The Bad news: The bore looks like the surface of Mars, the weapon is unfireable. :c More Good news: We got it for only about $800 instead of the usual $1600.
rebore it
What we plan right now is to get the damn thing fireable. I guess that would require reboring it. :v:
you should post pics
you should post pics
Actually, we've gotten a major improvement already. We decided to go with the electrolysis approach. A couple of hours ago, the bore was the surface of Mars. Mars is gone now. All of that rusting and pitting hath been vanquished.
I can't decide if I like my AK more with wood, or black furniture...only solution is to buy another...
I can't decide if I like my AK more with wood, or black furniture...only solution is to buy another...
That does reminds me, I need to get a Kalinka Optic or some other PSO scope for mine, I have some shitty UTG tactical rails scope and that conflicts heavily with the rest of the style.
I've been trying to decide on an optic for a while. It really comes down to mini red dot on the handguard, or some sort of tube optic on the dogleg. Or mounting one of those hinged railed dustcovers...

Buy a low profile rail system that mounts on the dovetail and then mount your sight on that instead.
I've been wanting to get one of these for my AK http://kalinkaoptics.com/rifle-scopes/red-dot/kobra-military-red-dot-ak-1s-03-rifle-scope-side-mount.html But that optic costs more than my AK did.

But I realized that it's like EOTech height. You're going to end up with a chinweld on your stock using that.
They're expensive, but that site is currently the best place to get Russian Scopes and other optics for AK patterns.
yeah, luckily I found a Russian 4x scope ( I guess it's a PSO) at a local flea market for under a 100$, I use that one on my AK
yeah, luckily I found a Russian 4x scope ( I guess it's a PSO) at a local flea market for under a 100$, I use that one on my AK
Like I mentioned above, I have this ugly as fuck tacticool UTG rail with a rail on the side since I couldn't find an actual Russian Optic at the time, the scope I have on it is nice even though it's meant for an SKS. Also, that POSP adjustable magnification: [thumb]http://www.cheesepatrol.com/images/ak47/akblackwithposp.jpg[/thumb] Do want.
mismatching furniture would not bang [editline]29th October 2012[/editline] well it would bang cause it's an AK but you get what i'm saying
It looks like the Bumpfire stock. Since I haven't posted any of my rifles here yet, Here's a (crappy) cell phone picture of mine. -snip-
mismatching furniture would not bang [editline]29th October 2012[/editline] well it would bang cause it's an AK but you get what i'm saying
the stock that came with that furniture set wasn't comfortable and also didn't fit, plus bumpfire is fun.
It looks like the Bumpfire stock.
It looks like a folding stock to me. [editline]29th October 2012[/editline] oh it IS a bumpfire stock
I remember when I was a kid Australia was this amazing place populated entirely by crocodile Dundee and Steve Erwin, I was under the impression that it was the manliest country in the world with free flowing fosters and shotguns and Akubra's for everyone. It would seem unfortunately Home and away and neighbours are more the reality, a PC nanny state. Much like my own country, everybody assumes loads of drink, open fields populated by Colm Meany in a Lepracaun suit and limitless freedom to do what you want, the only true thing is the drink, our firearm laws are just a shit as Australia's, only our history with the troubles is the main reason for it rather than some lunatic massacring people.
It is a bit like Home and Away and Neighbours, except our murder rate nowhere near approaches the rate seen on Neighbours

Is it a Springfield or a Smith Corona? Just curious. I love those old bolt guns C: [editline]29th October 2012[/editline] Ohmygod yes please http://www.youtube.com/embed/kFYXTH7Gdhk

I love those old bolt guns C:
I don't really know much, although I can tell you the serial number is low, and the barrel is dated 1915. The stock also has the inspector's initials stamped on it somewhere (something they did early war). I hope this was helpful.

Below 800k they were only single heat treating the receivers and they have a tendency to shatter like glass, especially under the pressures of a modern .30-06 cartridge. There are ways to tell if the bolt is below 800k but I don't know off the top of my head, iirc it's based on the angle of the handle. For Smith Corona and RIA the serial number cutoff is in the 120k iirc. Definitely inspect the gun and do a little research before firing. In any event cool gun though. Early 1903s are hella cool. I almost bought a 1910 springfield with original Jan. 1910 barrel, but at $800 I couldn't justify a non-fireable rifle.
