British-trained Afghan Police based in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand Province have proved their ability as law-enforcers, by freeing a 13-year-old boy held hostage by two insurgent kidnappers. The boy had been snatched nine months previously in Nad-e Ali District, where he lived in the village of Shawal Kalay with his father, a civil servant in the district government.
(Posted today By Isafmedia.) A British Army infantry battalion has consolidated six months of experience to ruthlessly clear insurgents from an area of Helmand province, in one of their final operations before returning home. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 SCOTS) worked alongside their partners from the 2nd Kandak Afghan Uniformed Police to conduct the ‘advance to contact’ - an operation to engage enemy fighters in an area known as Shindac Mandah, north of Patrol Base Attal in Lashkar Gah district. Troops from Delta Company of Canterbury-based 5 SCOTS have been in Helmand since September 2010, mentoring the Afghan police officers who are increasingly taking over security responsibilities in the area. They return home in April. Their aim in this operation was to sweep away insurgent fighters operating in the area, and demonstrate to locals that the Police and other institutions of governance in Helmand are now in control and have complete freedom of movement. These aims were eminently achieved and, in addition, four insurgents were killed plus a further two key insurgent ringleaders in the community detained. A combined force of more than 100 men from 5 SCOTS and the Afghan police crossed the line of departure at 0630hrs and headed north toward an area known to be held by insurgents. As they moved north, the Police interacted with the local people they met, stopping for cups of chai and discussing the forthcoming harvest and plans to open a new school. Such interaction between the Afghan Police and Afghan people is vital in building up intelligence and gauging what soldiers call the ‘atmospherics’ - the feeling of an area which tells soldiers whether it’s safe or there is a threat.
In my opinion mandatory military service is currently much better choice than a paid army. Look what happened to Sweden, they are struggling to get people to apply for the job. And we do have proper equipment. We just switched to better uniform pattern few years ago, and got new combat gear along with that. We are also getting AT-equipment for our F-18s, and I'm pretty sure we do have boots warm enough to keep the feet warm during winter. And we'd probably have large amounts of uniforms anyways as the paid military would probably turn mandatory if a war broke out. And you will actually learn much valuable skills during the mandatory time. It keeps you in shape, as the fatness is constantly raising concern, you learn discpline, you can learn commanding, you can choose an MP path that will help you if you plan to have a career as a cop, you can get truck license, you can learn Co-working with other people and much more. And 6 months ain't really that bad. I'm planning on staying 12 months. And you can go to non-military service or jail anyways.
362 days is a long time. Lets hear your over optimistic opinion again when you've started serving your time, and most importantly when you got first hand experience on "the boots". I never had to experience too much of freezing my ass off in the middle of nowhere as i'm serving as a MP and i'm going to be moved to reserve in few weeks, But i can give you this advice: Newspaper. Stuff your boots with it. It might sound ridiculous but it keeps your boots dry and thus keeps your toes warm and prevents necrosis.

After more than five months of operating alongside the 4th Tolay, 3/215 Brigade Afghan National Army, troops from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment (1 R IRISH) had the pride of seeing their Afghan warriors successfully plan and execute a company-level operation for the first time. Operation TORA GHAR 15 saw the unit clear a route of improvised explosive devices and cause serious disruption to insurgent activity in Zangal Kalay. Having already carried out smaller section-level patrols in support of British-led operations, this was a big, if natural, step forward for the Afghan warriors. It saw the Afghan troops storm into what was once a hotbed of insurgent activity. The ANA’s counter-IED specialists cleared a high-threat route, setting up fire support positions for the rest of the company to apprehend insurgents and search suspicious compounds. The company commander, Captain Mustamand, briefed and led his troops throughout, translating the meticulous planning into results. Soldiers from C Company, 1 R IRISH, played a supporting role by temporarily manning checkpoints in order to free up ANA manpower, but played no part in the actual operation. The main object of Op TORA GHAR 15 was to increase the confidence that local people have in the ANA and demonstrate to those involved in insurgent activity that the ANA now dominate the area. In this respect it was a total success, with Capt Mustamand having command and control of the situation throughout, whilst his warriors gained further strength and confidence in their abilities. While there is still more work to be carried out on the development of the ANA men, the Royal Irish troops are confident that their recent successes have d

An F-15 Eagle assigned to the 44th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, Kadena AB, Japan flies above Korat, Thailand on March 23, after completing an exercise scenario maneuver during Cope Tiger 2011, an annual, multilateral, joint field training exercise currently being conducted at Korat and Udon Thani Royal Thai Air Bases, March 14-25.
