Glad to see France tolerates religion.
Only as much as they tolerate other crazy people who believe in fairies, ghosts and demons.
Any kind of headwear is banned in schools, and sometimes at work too, here, and I have no problem with that (Burqas are headwear).
Well, I agree with such bans in such areas. If you go to school/work, people should know you and should not see 3 women in a black thing walking around.
But on the street, there is no such thing
It is not taking away the freedom to express your religion, because nowhere in the koran does it say that women must wear them.
well, we could argue on that but I believe it is. The quran doesn't specifically state that one should wear headwear/burqa/niqab, but it does say that a woman should not make herself attractive to one of the other sex and that she should cover some parts of her face.
People came up with the headwear, and probably later with the burqas. So in the end the headwear/burqa/niqab is worn because of religious reasons.
like a necklace with a cross hanging to it. I don't believe the bible states anywhere that one should wear a necklace with a cross hanging onto it, but if it was suddenly banned, I'm pretty sure you would be taking away the freedom of expressing your religion.
Women are not forced to wear a burqa. Saying otherwise is a myth that needs to die.

Oh funny because i got a muslim friend who said that they are forced to do it. Maybe he is just christian who prays allah?

I actually think anyone using the headwear or whatever (hoofddoek) should be ashamed of himself, because from what I know, the koran says that only mohammed's women may wear the headwear, so that everyone knows that those women, are mohammed's women.
If they want to wear it, what's the problem? Geez, Europe... lighten up.
So they can't rob a bank or something without being indentified

that's pretty normal, even schools in Turkey have banned the wearing of headwears, a long long time ago. Banning such headwear in any form in school is nothing new, almost every school has it here.
If I remember correctly, the burqa isn't even a religious item women have to wear.

Wait a minute, you are not allowed to think :v:
So they can't rob a bank or something without being indentified
but that's what this whole bullshittery is, robbing a bank in a burqa makes little sense
why the fuck would anyone rob a bank in a burqa and not in something easier to wear that still covers your body.
I say ban and impose a "love it or leave it policy" for immigration. (Tropico 3)
Well they should throw in a ban for dreadlocks on white people too... *shudder*
I don't really think we have any right to ban their burqas, people should be free to express themselves however they feel, and the argument that "you can't see who it is" seems pretty flawed as it is only subservient muslim women who wear them, and they are the last people who are going to cause a threat to anyone
OK guys, there is obviously some kind of misinterpretation of this. In the Qur'an, it tells woman to cover everything except for their hands and faces. There aren't exactly forced to wear burqas (my mom doesn't, but my teacher does), they can wear a hijab and cover the rest of their body with like a dress or something. However, some schools of thought say that you must cover everything.
also if you plan on robbing a bank, a burqa is a horrible idea what with the robe making it hard to move, it would be much easier to throw your hoody up and put on a balaclava
ninja'd by that much

well, yea but it's still their choice if they want to or not at the end of the day

Saying "Thur cood bee them turrorists in them thar burqas" is stupid; the sane people in the thread are saying it's a symbol of oppression and most of the women who wear them simply take it for granted. It's culture, they grew up with it. The women who are smarter than that gave up on Islam a long time ago.

okay yeah, but it is their culture. I couldn't ask them to remove their history and cultural diversity, as I have never had to.
I personally cannot see a reason for solely banning burqas. In western countries there are cultural structures in place to ensure that a woman that does not want to wear the burqa, doesn't have to.
I personally just support any and all laws that diminsh religion and promote secularism.

also another thing, people don't just believe in religions because they have to, they don't just give up on it as soon as they see the alternative. I have a Jewish friend who is very aware of the alternatives, such as existentialism etc, but he still believes in judaism, because it is his heritage.
American women are "forced" to wear t-shirts too
let's ban t-shirts
Actually, the limited requirement is to cover the nipples and genitalia. Some places you don't even have to cover the nipples.
I personally think that they shouldn't be banned altogether because some women might like to wear them
but they should be banned in banks and other high security places for obvious reasons

Thread does not deserve 3 exclamation marks in title, as this is boring and i don't care about it
We should ban bibles because they annoy people sometimes. Like burqas, that's why they get banned.
I think the Burqa is offensive to the slutty prostitutes of our country.
I think the Burqa is offensive to the slutty prostitutes of our country.
Everything can be offensive if it's different in this society. Makes me sad. Nothing wrong with people wearing burqas.
Nothing wrong with people wearing burqas.
do you hate women
In high security areas, maybe I can understand it, but people seem to complain about the fact that they're "forced to wear it" and whatnot. It's not a government's job to regulate cultural pressure. As long as they aren't physically forcing women to wear them there's nothing wrong with it.
