Hey man, that could of been an important business meeting.
Man this reminds me of the first ride-along I did. City of Saratoga. Virtually no crime rate at all. On Sunday night. A day when even most criminals aren't very active. Throughout the night nothing is happening. Few calls, virtually no activity. Then near the end of the shift we suddenly get a call of a domestic disturbance. When we get there the guy hadn't done much to the wife. Reportedly she was hysterical. He grabbed her wrists to control her and she claimed her wrists hurt. Under Californian law if the victim reports pain we are required to arrest the husband. No ifs ands or buts. Pretty smooth sailing so far. No drama, no violence, everyone is complying. The guy is in the backseat of the car being read his rights and under these circumstances he was probably released from the county jail the next morning (since this was all happening at 2 AM). Anyway just as we're getting ready to go the wife darts out of the house towards the car. Two officers try to hold her back as she goes right up to the backseat window and starts crying hysterically. Eventually the rest of the cops peel her off the glass and take her back into the house. I never saw that coming. It seemed everything was calm, everyone was being sane and rational. Then all of a sudden the whole thing turns into this big, emotional and rather hectic scene. And then as we're driving to jail the one question this guy asks is if he'll be out in time for a business meeting the next day. His wife just darted out of his house, shoved past two cops like a football player (American football anyway) and cried all over the backseat window of the police car that he was being driven to jail in and all he could think about was tomorrow's business meeting.
Well in the mans defense the womans outbursts were probably a common occurrence. That time just happened to be the first time cops were called in. Seeing that he had a business meeting he was probably an intelligent individual who most likely knew the law and what it implicated, and knew that he would be soon released. He probably knew that the woman would calm down and that everything would settle back to normal, so with this in mind he focused on the meeting. Not to knock on woman but damn you guys sure make mountains out of mole hills
I've been faced with the situation, but you haven't I doubt, so you're still naive enough to think like that. Lets say there's a drunk/drugged up person with a gun. He's waving it around at people but hasn't targeted you directly yet. He's fired warning shots and generally presents a threat to yourself and everyone in the area. It's your legal right to fire if you feel your life is in danger, or the lives of those around you. You don't know his intentions yet but you have reason to believe someone will die if you don't do something. Do you want to take the shot and risk it not dropping him, and have him turn the gun on you? Or do you want to make damn sure that 1 shot puts him down? You may not have time to empty a magazine into him before he has lead flying your direction. Just something to think about when deciding on your defensive handgun. There's also lots of theories on where to place shots to neutralize people the fastest. A common belief is to get rounds into the pelvis then go for center of mass if they're still standing, that's also going to be a lot easier to do under stress than just going for center of mass.
I would go for the pelvis, so that they fall down in pain.
Quick question for you firearm savvy folks - My grandfather owns an old, exposed hammer side by side shotgun. He inherited it from his father so it's probably around 100 years old. It's still in amazing condition with very little surface rust. However, some time in the 60s, he removed and destroyed the firing pins (because of something related to firearm licenses and whatnot). My question is that, would restoring it be worth it at this point, as it hasn't been fired for 40+ years or should I just leave it alone and keep it for display? I'm leaning towards leaving it as is and mounting it somewhere, but I thought I'd get a second opinion.

Unless you really want to shoot with it though.
I'd be worried about the condition of the metal. If you did want to fire it, firing pins are fairly simple to make, but a gunsmith will probably tell you to hang it up somewhere instead.
If there isn't much rust it should probably be fine. You can have new firing pins made and the gunsmith can inspect the weapon while he's at it. I say make the pins, have it inspected (maybe test-fired as well) and then hang it up on the wall. That way you don't run any major risk of damaging by running hundreds of rounds through it on a regular basis but you still have a shotgun just in case :v: Of course this is assuming you can legally reactivate it to working order. Do you live in England?

They make 12 gauge ammo for antique shotguns that is much lower pressure and safe to run. Look around on the internet, I think federal makes it. I would restore it and use it for a display piece. (Protip: you can make firing pins from an old nail if you're handy with a file and know what you're doing... At least for those old shotguns.)
I have one more question... I found after awhile that my stripper clips i use for my sks are extremely hard to push the bullets out into the magazine... Is this because they have to be oiled so the bullets slide easier or am i just doing it incorrectly. I have switched to removable magazines for now btw.

Just make sure to press firmly from the base of the round.
I have a Glock right now and want to get a nice bolt action rifle just for some fun target shooting. I'd like a 30-06 and honestly just because that's what J.C. Denton used. :D I held a Howa at the gun store once which I liked, but I really don't have a clue what to get. Anybody care to point me in a direction before I start doing some research?

I have some Turkish stripper clips for my Mausers and no matter how hard I push they just won't budge. But then I also have some WWII style German stripper clips that work just fine. Once you get the first two cartridges off it gets much easier. Hi, I have several 22lr's and I was wondering if I can shoot 22 magnum in my bolt action 22. I can shoot 22 shorts and normal 22lr amunition so what would happen if I sot 22 mags through it

No you cannot. It will ruin your gun.

No.

Firearms are so cheating. Seriously. Every one of us has 2 ULTIMATE Weapons; Fists. You can kill another man with a single blow even. [editline]12:10AM[/editline] I'd still carry a Mac Ten though, in tougher situations.

The only assholes who talk that same "real men use their fists" shit like you are the nerdes who've never been in a real fight in their life and think the shit will play out like a hollywood chop-socky flick when it goes down. Then they wake up with a broken face and a 2 day headache. You're 12 years old, go troll some other thread.
Deagle is sexy.
And that is pretty much the only good thing about it.
Your avatar: 30% - Fits perfectly. 70% - Internet tough guy.
Wow, miss the entire fucking point of my post why don't you. I wasn't trying to be an ITG, I was pointing out TO the ITG, that his silly childish view of weapons and combat is retarded. "Every one of us has 2 ULTIMATE Weapons; Fists." is what he said. As I stated, I'm an Amateur boxer, I compete in a sport that revolves entirely around the use of fists, and yet, I fail to see how using a firearm to defend yourself in a life or death situation, is "cheating", as if it were some kind of game. Varj is childish and moronic.
In all honesty I always see these debates on which handgun caliber will do better. Every bullet will kill you just as dead. Its more about the practice and knowledge of using the weapon than the caliber itself that will help you survive an encounter. I'd rather have a gun with more ammo than a higher caliber because it means i can put more lead down range rather than worry about how many shots I have left.
I can understand that, but you should be worrying about shot placement. I can't think of too many situations where you would engage targets, and need more than 10 rounds. Most self defense is for protecting yourself from one or two assailants. I don't know, maybe i'm just thinking too narrowly, but the way i see it I would rather have a higher caliber that i trust will stop someone in one shot, because every shot you take has to be accounted for. If you miss, that bullet keeps going, and if you're on the street, or in a parking lot or anything like that, it could be bad for someone else. I read an article about a guy who carried a revolver, because it forced him to focus on accuracy, and thinking about when he realistically would call on his weapon to be used. Because with a 6 shot snub nosed revolver, if you get into a situation, you will probably not get the chance to reload.

What we're saying is that if you ARE going to carry a bear killer cartridge, you better be comfortable with shooting it. The whole point for a self defense round is to pick something that 1) you can shoot comfortably and accurately 2) Has good terminal performance. In that order, not the other way around. I don't see much point in going larger than .45 ACP or GAP. .45 ACP is known to have good terminal performance, and most people can shoot it at speed with accuracy with some practice. If you need to go bigger than that for a SD round, you are probably getting mugged by Grizzly bears and I can't help you. :rolleye:
