My local sherriff's dept. used to use them for training. Most agencies use their service firearms with blank firing adapters and a modified version of lasertag nowadays though. They don't have to buy any more guns that way, they just use their existing weapons. That does sound like a lot of fun although you'd still be limited by existing gun laws and blank rounds cost a lot more than airsoft BBs.
Therefore realistically I'd stick with airsofting or paintballing.

I'm a member of an airsoft-based OpFor roleplaying group that does training with the NFTA, SWAT units, and the National Guard. Its definitely not a "kiddie sport".

its pretty childish to spend gross amounts of money on a plastic toy which breaks easily and is designed to do so for the sole reason of thinking that combat is a fun game like some masochist

Gross amounts, yes, I totally agree there. People that spend 1,000$+ on it are idiots. But it's still very fun. Realistically you can be all set for about 200$. That's not too bad.

Finally got around to finishing up my Yugo M70 AK, which I welded back together from a parts kit. It seems to be in good working order, ran ten rounds through it with no problems, it's just incredibly sticky when I try to ratchet the bolt back, something with the hammer. Anyway, pics:

How well does it group?
I heard the Yugos don't have chrome lining which actually improves their accuracy a bit.

Most of the quality guns are durable and are designed to last, not all airsoft guns are plastic pieces of crap, they've really improved in the recent years.

I just fired it as quickly as I could from the hip in case it exploded in my face. My guess is it shoots 1 Minute of Building considering the bore is pitted to shit. All that matters to me is that it shoots though.
I'll take it out tomorrow and test the accuracy.

I used a Wiselite Arms repair channel, it's semi automatic only and all, as you can tell it has no auto sear pin.

Basically I took the two cut sections of the receiver and welded it to that. Perfectly legal.

Yeah it's the standard grip.

Depending on how bad the barrel is I'd look around for a replacement. Pitting can cause catastrophic failures if it's bad enough.
Here's a place that has em' for 40 bux.

And a new one for 110.

This is a milled M70, not a stamped M70, finding a replacement barrel is next to impossible, then you have to get it out of the receiver, since it's screwed in, even harder.
It's not that bad though, nothing that would lead to a catastrophic failure, just incredibly dark with some obvious pitting, the grooves are still strong and sharp and shiny in some places, and it passes the bullet test (bullet doesn't go all the way into the muzzle).

Nothing your average insurgent is worried about.
Well look at it this way then. No gun can possibly be as bad as my Mosin. It averages 36 MOA. The groups are literally 3 feet apart at 100 yards. Hitting anything at any range is a total toss of the dice. Most of the rounds aren't on paper. Half that are on paper are on the target of the person shooting next to me.
This isn't caused by any barrel related issue however as the bore is about pretty good for a mismatched Mosin. It has more to do with the user. Honestly I can't hit the broad side of a barn from within it using that gun. Then again I take a bit of pride in the fact that I own the very worst firearm that I have ever laid my hands upon. I have literally never seen a more useless weapon in my life. It is better as a club than a rifle.

Couldn't get a decent shot of the bore. It's not the prettiest of AK's, I'm almost certain it's been through the worst of the Yugoslavian Civil Wars, where I'm sure it was tied to a truck and dragged through dirt for most of its life, but it works and it looks cool. All in all, well worth the time and money spent.

My gun is worse than anything you can possibly have. That's quite some bragging right I have there.

Haha, I've managed to get maybe 4 or 5 MOA with my Mosin, though I've never really tried. You're not giving the Mosin enough credit brosky, it's a wonderful rifle for the time period, it just sounds like yours isn't that great and you aren't the best shot on the planet.

You probably couldn't beat a last ditch Type 99 Arisaka.

I think it's mostly flinch. Either way my Mosin is completely useless. Did I mention every time I chamber a round I have to put the rifle against the ground and stomp the bolt into battery? The only other way around it is to remove the bolt, attach a round to the extractor/bolt face and slide the bolt assembly with a round attached to it back in. I'm guessing it's a destroyed extractor.

True, those do have a reputation for (what was it?) a 1/4 or something chance of exploding every time you fired it and my Mosin, even with the little kick starts did survive 100+ rounds so far. Rounds that only landed on my neighbor's targets but at least the gun hadn't exploded and taken any of my fingers off. Yet.
Then again I've never seen a last ditch 99 in person so my Mosin still stands as the single worst firearm I've ever seen.

That's a problem with some arsenal rebuilt Mosin Nagants (not a common problem with factory new guns), rather easy to fix with a little elbow grease. Watch these:
Was literally about to post this sentence after reading his post.

Yep, but keep in mind that the sigs cost the same or more than the H&Ks do.
And that they can't pass the same sand and abuse tests that the sigs and glocks can.
And for any H&K owner who bashes glocks, there's more kBs with .40s&w USPs than there are with glocks. I think H&K just hates civilians which is why they try to sell us such mediocre guns at such outrageous prices.

To give you an idea of how bad the last ditch rifles were, here's a picture of a GOOD last ditch rifle:
http://oldguns.net/pix/smof4837.jpg
Note the wooden buttplate held on with fucking nails.
http://pictures.auctionarms.com/9665122045/73ca765bd82c5acb4e4bf47c7b8a9db4.jpg
That cocking handle is just a metal rod with a larger metal knob welded to it.
