Which brings us to an interesting dynamic of ammo availability. Popular calibers vs. wildcat. With NATO pattern ammo you have lots of sources to begin with. There's military surplus from many countries and every commercial brand makes the popular stuff. But there are more people who own guns in those calibers so they tend to fly off the shelf. (I remember at one time .22LR was impossible to find.) Availability of wildcat ammo is a little less volatile. There are only a handful of people who have guns that fire them but only a couple manufacturers. Therefore the caliber is somewhat more immune to gun panics but there's less on the shelf to begin with. Sometimes big retailers like Wal Mart or Big 5 don't carry them at all. At the end of the day I'd stick with the more popular calibers. But that's just me. If a gun store is out of 9x19mm or 5.56mm one day they'll typically have more within the week. They also tend to be cheaper unless you like handloading.
You're always best off just going for a gun in an oddball caliber and buying a press and some dies. It's easier to find brass for wild cats, as well as other components. When the backorder time on something like 9mm brass extends nearly into next year. I've had no problem getting .45gap, .357sig, and .460rowland components at all, while my friends with 9mms and .357magnums are just plain fucked. If you go with mil-surplus ammo like for the 7.62x54r or 5.45mm, it may be nice now but in 10 years those guns are going to be about as worthless as a club.
I was using the Nagant as an example of a revolver shooting multiple calibers. Didn't know that those new-fangled .327s could do that as well. Also 9x19mm hard to find? .44 Mag everywhere? I've never heard of that happening before. The ammo scare has made some weird combination of shortages. Here in CA 9x19 is pretty abundant at this point but it's all subject to change. I remember at one point .380 ACP couldn't be found anywhere in the country.
In my previous post I forgot to say that Nagant revolvers can't shoot 32acp unless you switch out the wheel on them. I don't know about the other calibers you listed off though. And yeah 9x19mm, and almost all the other pistol calibers are darn hard to find except for .40 S&W and .44 Magnum. :v: That's just pistol calibers though, Rifle ammo is in abundance. Either a pistol in .45gap or 10mm.
No, sorry. I'm illiterate you see.
Ah, I see. Tell me, then, how did you go about finding this forum?
Gonna update OP with proper gun safety.

This is Mr. Boom stick he is usually found in trailer parks or truck gun racks. He is often deployed when you find some sumbitch city boy sleeping with your daughter. It is best used with lots and lots of moonshine.
I didn't even read this so let's all cut to the chase. What is a "Gun"?
A gun is something with a controlled explosion. It can be anything from a cannon to a firearm.
A gun is something with a controlled explosion.
Railguns :eng101: A better definition would be a projectile firing device used as a weapon or for entertainment.
Powder in a gun doesn't explode, it just burns.
Powder in a gun doesn't explode, it just burns.
Hence controlled.
On a sidenote, since this thread is close-ish to death, lets name the next one "Guns!" instead of Firearms. That way we can discuss super cool things like pellet rifles and electromagnetic cannons :science: [editline]03:48AM[/editline]
Hence controlled.
A controlled explosion is different than a burn.
How are they going to be worthless?
He means the seemingly bottomless sources of surplus ammo will dry up. Used to be in the 1950's you could buy surplus American 30.06 cheaper than .22LR, good luck doing that nowadays.
*Prays for the military to drop 5.56*
I don't think 5.56 is produced at the quantities that 30.06 was in WWII.
How are they going to be worthless?
they won't be, you will just have to buy commercial ammo instead of cheap surplus. oh well, that is what wolf is for
Nowadays if the US army drops a caliber they'll probably either destroy their inventory or ship it to one of our buddy buddy countries.

Better start stocking now then. 7.62x54 in the sardine cans is still fairly cheap... although nowhere near as cheap as it used to be. .30-06 on the other hand... :frown:

I found a listing that piqued my interest lately. Apparently there are a handful of .308 Chilean Mausers that were imported not too long ago and they all qualify for Antique status which would save me a lot of headaches with FFL transfers. I'm currently fence sitting between buying one or saving up for a centerfire autoloading rifle of some kind. But before I put my money down I'd like to know a few things. Firstly, since there are rechambered up to .308 from 7mm Mauser and not to mention they are old guns in general are they even safe to fire? Is the rechambering on these rifles sloppy? Are some safe while others are hand grenades? In general do they tend to be beat to heck or hardly used? It said that since they're antique you don't need an FFL. Can the weapon be shipped strait to my house? Does this also apply in California or is there a law here that requires me to have a C&R license or have it transferred through a dealer even if the weapon is antique? I know it may be a longshot that someone here has a Chilean Mauser in their gun safe but if you know anything about them let me in on it.
Ah. Misunderstood. May seem expensive compared to the listings you see online for ~80$ but keep in mind these things weigh 25 pounds and shipping on an item that heavy is not cheap at all.

Yo dawg I herd you like guns.
Yo dawg I herd you like guns.
Yo dawg, I heard you like glocks, so we put a glock under your rifle so when it jams you can't fix it... wait...
In general do they tend to be beat to heck or hardly used?
All the Brazilian and Chilean 7mm and .308 Mausers I've seen have all been thoroughly used, and usually have a bit of pitting in the metal. The wood will be scratched up, as with most any surplus rifle. Although most of them are in average condition, pretty safe to use.
Ah, I see. Tell me, then, how did you go about finding this forum?
I let the fates guide me.
Railguns :eng101: A better definition would be a projectile firing device used as a weapon or for entertainment.
A bow is a device that fires projectiles A bow isn't a gun. Anyways, I don't even know why you added "used as a weapon or for entertainment", there are plenty of reasons what guns are used for, you shouldn't try to list them out in the definition.
I let the fates guide me.
The fates must be pretty kind to you considering that since you're illiterate you mus presumably communicate by hitting keys at random and in the end you wind up with a clear, legible message.
*Prays for the military to drop 5.56*
Couldn't buy it even if they did. The standard issue green tips are armor piercing.
