its no different than any other song on that list
theyre built to be catchy on the condition they expire quickly
No it really isn't
"I'm all about that bass, 'bout that bass, 'bout that bass, no treble," multiple times, with that one line having little musical variety, and the line itself just being... Dumb, honestly. It's playing off of the subculture of amplifying bass in music to no end, but overplaying it. This is taking it rather literally, but if you're "all about that bass, no treble," all you have is a numb, muffled sound. Taking away from it being literal, I don't even know what else it can mean. Then the verses of the song go on about being plus-sized. ...So why is the line "all about that bass" there? I can deal with the song riding that plus-sized pride craze, but to me, parading around the "all about that bass" portion just makes it feel a lot cheaper. It's pretty basic, musically so, too. That's not necessarily bad, but it doesn't help it at all, especially since it doesn't feel like it goes anywhere with it.

Going back to Rude, the only thing that bugs me is the premise, the story that the lyrics tell. The song itself isn't that bad, and just by altering the lyrics so it doesn't have the guy going back again and again even after saying "I'm gonna marry her, anyway," I could like it more. It's not that bad, musically.

Yes it kind of is***
Sorry, edit button won't work
i dont see the difference, shes using it as a catchy hook, not a lecture of music
what if i compare it to counting stars? is he really losing sleep? probably? does that matter, fuck no, hes just making a catchy song and the verses talk about guilty pleasures and contradictions. nothing really amazing here, but its a catchy song. the same chords are played throughout the song. its pretty basic too, just the same soundfont just to back up the vocals
i could break down other songs but really theyre all the same. one being a step ahead of the others isnt really a feat cause theyre built to be catchy pop songs. having more talent is totally dependent and at that level of money making talent theres a wide range of ability to actually sing/play an instrument thats decent for that standard
I admit I haven't haven't looked at the lyrics to Counting Stars to judge, yet, but I find it much more musically appealing and interesting than All About That Bass.
Todd in the Dark does a good analysis of pop songs, if you'd want to hear a more thought-out and analyzed opinion.
Saying "they're all the same" is just incredibly silly to me, though.

The chord structure of Counting Stars may be basic, but what they do with it is what makes it more appealing. I don't feel that All About That Bass does anything at all with what it has.

The 'All about that bass' line is a metaphor. She's saying she is plus-sized, fat, whatever. The bass can be described as deep or heavy, while treble is more thin, frail. You could also take the meaning of bass as the instrument, which is also large, heavy, curvy and plays throughout the song.
So that's why she is all about the bass and not the treble, because she is proudly fat and doesn't care about the skinny bitches or how it goes in the song.

I can only feel that that's quite a stretch for a metaphor, but I'll take it. At least the line doesn't feel as bland and forced.

That was the first interpretation that came to me when I heard it, seemed pretty obvious actually. I never saw it as a reference to how the bass is "overamplified" in recent music. As to it being repetitive/bland, I saw that as exactly the effect she wanted to achieve since it was a unpretentious pop tune with a similarly 'bubble-gum pop' music video to match it. If she were trying and failing terribly to write a complex song I'd understand the hate, but all she tried to do was just make an unashamedly pop song with a simple message.
Just let it go, man.
You know what's more troubling? He played the exact same chords for all of those
About 5 of them used the same chords, not nearly all of them
"Rude" has to be one of the worst songs I've ever heard, and the more I listen to it, the more I hate it
It's gone so far that I now need to change the channel whenever it comes on, too bad that most channels feel the need to play it once like every 15 minutes or so
The lipsyncing is so awful in this, I don't get the appeal of it. He should just video himself singing it at the mic.
No Milky Chance - Stolen Dance? I swear that fucking song comes on at least once every time a radio has been turned on for weeks now where I am.

Pretty much every popular song has used the same 4 fucking chords.

That got popular outside of Europe? I am so sorry for you guys.
i enjoy all of these, should I end self?
except all about that bass, fuck that piece of shit song.
The original yeah, I quite like this cover though.

My 8-year-old niece lives with me so I've gotten used to it.
It was an ok movie but that was it.

All About That Bass is a great example of how a decent idea can go completely down the crapper.
Also, fuck Rude. I hate that song so much.
What about that Budapest shit song that I am so fucking sick of hearing
Man fuck that echosmith song 'all the cool kids'. Its a mainstream band, with a bunch of kids thinking they're hipster/indie. The chorus is laughably bad.
"I wish that I could be like the cool kids,
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in.
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids."
Maybe if pop stations actually played "All the hits" like they claim instead of "All the hits of the past month!"
The only reason why I'm familiar with most of these songs is that they're always playing over the PA system at Walmart during my shifts. Some of them are pretty good, but I don't really care for the others.
Am I imagining this, or was the guy miming to a recording of himself?
Bravado is actually my favorite song from that album. Oh well.
Bravado is great, but I'll always be a Buzzcut Season kinda guy
