On another note, I dunno, these people sound like the kind of people who will be recidivists. Death penalty for this is dumb though, a long prison sentence is perfectly good. People don't realise how long prison can chew up your life. Whether a human is worth more than animal is debatable (on a technical standpoint then yes, humans are worth more), but what is definite is the fact that the deliberate torturing of an animal with intent to kill/cause pain for your own pleasure is the sign that the person has severe problems. In terms of morality it's lower than homicide.
