yeah RHCP are basically funk-rock
Isn't CCR some type of rock, I consider them more like country.
I would also say that Deep Purple might be early metal, am I right?
CCR country rock (like allman brothers and skynyrd, deep purple is PROTO-metal which in not heavy metal. They are really just hard rock with a few songs that influenced metal (which is the idea of Proto-metal).
I'm pretty sure Deep Purple and Sabbath were the "pioneers" of metal.

I just can't seem to do it Doctor. Will I ever be able to play the violin again?
I'm pretty sure Deep Purple and Sabbath were the "pioneers" of metal.
Well, perhaps in some regards. The only thing Deep Purple really pioneered was the intense vocals and fast upbeat drumming style (which Zeppelin had nearly cornered just a year or so before, as well as the intense virtuoso playing of Blackmore). After Machine Head (1972-73), and even up to Blackmore's departure (1975), they weren't really worth anything in the realm of metal pioneering. Really, all in all they put out about six metal songs total. Everything else they did was very plain blues. Their heavy use of keyboards makes this pretty clear if nothing else.
It was Rainbow and Judas Priest that really paved the way for Metal in '75 and '76.
One band that is GREATLY overlooked as far as proto-metal goes is Budgie. They were real pioneers. Here's a cut from 1973's Never Turn Your Back on a Friend. It's incredible fast guitar soloing, very THICK bass sound, mythical imagery and lyrics, and powerful FAST drumming. Basically they took elements of all of the real powerhouses of proto-metal and put it into one amazing package. This song here is an EPIC.

Now one last thing.
I think the real thing that puts Black Sabbath apart from it's proto-metal brethren is it's dedication to it's form, and the progression it showed. What really "held back" most proto-metal was the very dedicated attachment to the blues and blues rock. You can still hear this VERY clearly in Sabbath's first record, but as soon as Paranoid it's for the most part shed. This stripping of blues is really what put Sabbath on a whole new level.
Perhaps stripping isn't what they really did, but instead they took it to a whole new level. They took the gloom of blues and took it into the beyond, where others just lived with what they had. Sabbath was a boundary pusher. Of course, it would be Judas Priest that would REALLY shred the chains of Blues on Sad Wings of Destiny onwards. Bands like Deep Purple kind of tugged at their bindings, but never really were able to escape Blues, or destroy it if you'd like. Ian Gilliam's screams alone weren't enough to release them from their bondage.
That's enough from me.
This is a rock thread anyway.
Speaking of Rainbow:

Why does every thread about some sort of rock music always turn into some discussion about metal.
We need more threads about Tom Petty, and Blue Oyster Cult.
Airbourne, best Hard Rock band ever in my opinion.

Only song I've heard by blue öyster cult is cities on flame with rock and roll, but it is a damn fine song
What would you classify this as? Pop rock? Soft rock? Maybe not rock at all?

I think it's really good. And I'm not being sarcastic.

You know what sir, you might just be right.
I love Airbourne.
airbourne is just a poor man's AC/DC imo. Unoriginal for the most part. A few good songs, but otherwise it's just pretty boring. Even the good songs get boring pretty quick.
Celtic Rock.
Dropkick Murphys, mainly.
