While that would work for CRTs, LCD screens use the same power for any color. It's actually worse, since you'll probably turn up the brightness if the screen is black.
This only has any effect on CRT ( Fat ) moniters. On modern LCD ( Flat ) moniters black and white have identical power usage.

It would depend on a few factors, actually. But either way, I don't really think that the environment should be high on the priority list. There are more important things to deal with.
And before you environmental nuts go apeshit and give me that 'without the Earth there will be no life' bullshit, consider this: The Earth has been around for billions of years (thousands in the case of any creationist, although I don't think there are too many on FP) and hasn't had anything too bad happen. If and when something does happen, it ain't gonna happen during my life time. And I don't plan on having kids, so... whatever. There's too much crap we have to deal already. We DO NOT need any more complications. Once some of the shit clouds give way, then I will be more worrisome about the trees.
