I agree with OP. It'd be REALLY nice if some people would look after their dogs properly, that is, keeping them on a leash at all times and teaching them some basic manners, among other things. Sometimes I kinda feel it'd be awesome to actually walk a 300Kg (650+lbs) tiger, so that it would scare the living shit out of those pitbull, doberman and mastiff owners.
Never had much of a problem with dogs attacking/barking at me but, where I live no one wants to clean up their dog's shit. There are signs everywhere for a $250 fine for not "curbing your dog", but people still don't bother.
Same thing, over here... we actually have some signs all over the place, saying: "Mr. Dog, would you please tell the animal of your owner to always keep you on a leash and clean up your droppings? Thank you very much!" ^ translated from spanish to english :eng101:
Holy shit you're one paranoid mother fucker, you should back the fuck off because it's none of your business. "SOME DARK WAS BARKING AT ME FROM 2M AWAY SO I WALKED UP, STOMPED ON THE GROUND AND LECTURED IT'S OWNER" It's a fucking dog, dogs will be god damn dogs and you acting like that just makes them hate people even more.
It is your "business" if it's unleashed and if it's acting like a threat to you. When I was eight years old, I remember that my neighbor's dog bit me, despite my friend claiming that "he's playful". I agree with the OP, better safe than sorry. Dogs are pretty unpredictable, and you don't know how they're going to react towards different people. Use the damn leash in public areas.

Tame a wolf pack and take them with you when you run, scare everyone away.
I wont even waste my time with you, continue pepper spraying dogs and kicking them. Jesus christ.
Sorry, but you really are thick aren't you? When a dog comes at you, barking, growling, whatever, you need to show it you aren't intimidated. No matter how much you train a dog, showing it you have bigger balls will make it back the fuck off (or tear you a new asshole, depends on how vicious it is). If a dog comes up to you in a calm manner you can get away with ignoring it, but if it comes at you growling, then yes, the owner isn't being very sensible and should be warned about that. Just letting the owner get off over that kind of thing is why we have dog attacks, owners who haven't been warned that their "precious, harmless puppy" (read: fully grown dog) is showing signs of hostility. That and quite a few dog owners are fucking imbeciles. My dog was attacked recently by a Rottweiler that was off it's lead, the owner didn't seem to care that his dog had attempted to flat out murder my dog for no reason. When my parents mentioned that they would be getting the police involved (as you do in any animal attack) he sounded concerned about that, and that only, showing it's probably happened in the past. He always walks his dogs off the lead, how long is it before that attacks a child?
trying to show a mentally unstable dog that youre not intimidated isnt gonna do jack shit but force it to attack you fucking faggot [editline]7th August 2011[/editline] get some knowledge punk [editline]7th August 2011[/editline] niggerpunk [editline]7th August 2011[/editline] guy on my avatar gets more action than you faggot (User was permabanned for this post ("Gimmick." - Pascall))

This is why I hate dogs.
Oh Jallen, you and your hatred of dogs. But still I got a good laugh out of imagining you stomping on the ground and roaring in the middle of the street while passers by look at you like you're the local loony.
Without getting into all the shitty mudslinging that's happened here, I'm gonna go with this: In my opinion, if you know your dog has a tendency to chase, it should be leashed in public areas - even if it won't bite, you can't guarantee how someone will react if they're terrified of dogs for example. Well trained dogs are fine, it's poorly trained dogs or dumb owners that cause the problems.
Never had problems with my own dogs, and I own a bad-tempered staffordshire bull terrier myself. He's not that bad. Sits on our garden chairs, scrounges at the dinner table and gets his hair everywhere, but not that bad. He will be 9 years old this year and still thinks he's a puppy. He's fine with family and people he knows, but growls at people he hasn't met. For that reason, we don't let anyone try and stroke him whenever we take him for walks, and he stays on a lead unless we're in a quiet area. If someone has a dog and they know that it has a bad temper, then they should keep it on a lead. You get idiots who don't do that, and my dog got attacked as a result- we took him for a walk and passed some campsite, and there was a big black dog off a lead. My dog came up to it in friendly greeting, and it just went for him and caused several large cuts (One missing my dog's eye by centimeters). The stupid woman who owned the dog just looked at us like we were dirt and didn't do a thing. That is the kind of owner you need to look out for. My dog, if anyone is interested. Its the owners of aggressive dogs I have a problem with. Also I was in a meadow.
I really like friendly dogs. Its the owners of aggressive dogs I have a problem with. I generally find taking the more conventional approach of showing it you're not a threat works perfectly fine.
OP are you autistic? growling at dogs?
Perhaps you need to learn to shut the fuck up, and ignore the dogs? I really hate people who just walk up and talk like that acting as if they're some sort of higher power.
I should start punching people in the face. They should just deal with it. Strong dogs with shit owners are potentially deadly. The least you could do is atleast leash the dog. Should people really have to be scared of going out on a jog, because they know they might get their face bitten off by some fuckmuppet's dog?
I agree with you for the most part OP, but you've gotta understand that at some point (we just got a dog) you have to train it, which takes time. e.g. i've gotta let our dog off the leash in fields etc so she can learn to fetch and come and then she'll be more obedient and i can control her better. Not that she's a scary dog, just inquisitive. Just saying, it's not the owners fault sometime, you've gotta train them somehow.
I know you think training a dog takes like a week, but it really doesn't. My dad's had dogs for 30 years (since he was 14), and he had to try and train all 6 he's had. He managed to get some simple commands in, but it's almost fucking impossible to override an animal's natural instincts. It would take longer than a dog has to live to train them and override their instincts unless you're really good. People need to chill and just ignore the damn things unless they're posing an actual threat. I mean, come on! Really, you were worried about a terrier? Grow some goddamn balls and ignore it. And a Jack Russel and a similar sized dog? Jesus H. Christ, man. They're small dogs! They won't hurt you because they're teeth and mouths are extremely small. Unless they get enough time to get their jaws around you (and they shouldn't cause you were running), they're not going to hurt you! Grow a fucking pair.
Maybe your dad's bad at training dogs. Not to mention they can be any sized dog and if you're not controlling them it's unacceptable. Especially in a public place. I love dogs, but if one was actually looking like it's gonna bite me I wouldn't think twice if I used my pistol on it. Having it on a leash, that's a different story but if your dog is gonna run around and be vicious that's fucked up. Not to mention what if my kids were with me? Then what? Public places are pretty much for people. not your dog to harass people (but your dog is more than welcome assuming it's under control). Although I say this cause I've seen a lot of dogs that should've been on leashes when they weren't.. it's just lack of responsibility. They just let the dog do whatever so they can be in their own world and I think that makes me more mad then anything.

And maybe you should start planning your training out abit more? Teaching it that attacking random people is wrong before teaching it fetch, for example? Fucking doubleposts
Not letting your dog off the lead will just lead it to becoming frustrated, people need to stop freaking out just because a dog sniffed their foot. Dogs barking and going up to you doesn't mean it thinks you're a human steak, most of the time it's just the dog being excitable and inquisitive and as long as you don't do something to piss it off (like showing aggression towards it) you should be fine, hell even if you do the most it will likely do is give you a warning growl, sure there are some dogs that will try to fuck you up, but they're so rare there's very little chance you'll encounter one.
so I stomped hard on the ground in front of me and roared deep and loud
Oh my god I can't breath
OP, you also make it sound like everyone has all the time in the world to train their dogs. Well, they don't. If they work, they may not have all day to try and train their dogs. They can do it slowly over a few days, but it's just not an instant thing. Just saying.
If you know you won't have the time to train the dog, then you shouldn't get one. As simple as that. I mean seriously, that's like getting stopped by the police, and then it turns out you don't have a drivers license, and your excuse for that is that you "Didn't have time to go to the lessons" .
I remember when a family friend took his dog out on a walk. This lady was walking her dog aswell, her dog is a bit smaller, and it just started to go ape-shit. The family friends dog started to growl at it and such. While the lady thought it would be a smart idea to try and smack the pitbull and say "No!.. Bad!" She was bitten, and then she attempted to press charges. Thats life for yeah.
My pet dog once pee'd on an old ladies leg. What catagory of dog encounter does that go under?
My pet dog once pee'd on an old ladies leg. just don't pay attention to the dog and if you step on it's paw. that's the dogs own fault for not moving.
