As I said in the Nintendo thread, I have a problem with the sticks being asymmetrical instead of keeping the upper-sticks symmetry Nintendo had going all throughout Gen8, and one of the biggest reasons is when you use the Joy-Cons separately:

P1 and P2 have wildly different layouts with the sticks how they are. The design for the Joy-Cons in general is pretty inelegant. I'd have centered the -/+ and Home-ish buttons, made the sticks symmetrical, and rounded the inner corners and sharpened the outer corners so the two halves are nearly identical. This'll be an especially big problem if they have motion sensors in them and you're expected to use them like Wiimotes for some games, because their layouts will be totally reversed.

one for lefthands one for righthands
everyone wins
I want to see that fucking Mario game, it looked like a real ass 3D Mario game.
(Can't wait to hear about the gimmick that ruins it)
Interesting...
the vid made it the Nintendo ASMR, good lord the clicking

If Zelda: Breath of the Wild is anything to go by, Nintendo could be done with gimmicks as far as games go. Star Fox Zero's reception could be the nail in that coffin.
Doesn't mean they won't still do things like A Link Between Worlds, but that was more like a fully fledged gameplay element, not a gimmick.
Being optimistic here but it looks like initial reception is pretty positive. Definitely a lot better than the Wii U reveal. Skyrim in the trailer was an AMAZING idea, people are fucking stoked on portable skyrim HD.
I'm personally super hyped for the big Mario Kart and Splatoon updates, BotW, and a possible Smash 4 update too. Easy day 1 purchase for me considering how much I use my U for MK8, smash and splatoon.

What are you talking about? Breathe of The wild is a ton of gimmicks. It just looks well made!
Honestly though the last Mario games were bad ass I had a lot of fun with Wii U Super Mario world.

You can just hold the controller the other way around.

Gimmicks is different from gameplay elements.
Sword fighting with motion controls in Zelda: Skyward Sword was an example of a gimmick because there was no real depth to it.
Also I really like the idea of splitting up the console handles for quick and easy multiplayer that isnt too competitive or serious. Although I'm curious on how some games will even function, how am I going to drift in Mario Kart or shield in Smash with those tiny controllers that seemingly dont even have shoulder buttons or triggers

But then he can't draw unnecessary diagrams.

3D World was actually a pretty fucking excellent and gimmick-free addition to the series.

Sword fighting with motion controls in Twilight Princess was a gimmick, because a waggle just replaced a button press.
Sword fighting with motion controls in Skyward Sword was not a gimmick, because it actually mattered when fighting many enemies which direction you were swinging.
A galaxy level 3d Mario launch title would be a pretty big fucking deal. People often regard Galaxy as one of the best Nintendo games ever and for good reason. I wouldnt be surprised to see the NX sell really well if it can fill out its launch title lineup with quality stuff like that.

Except the sword combat in Skyward Sword was so simplistic it was insulting. Every enemy was a fucking pattern game where you do a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal slash, and occasionally a stab. It is the very definition of having no depth.
would be nice if they did another 3d mario game that's actually like a 3d mario platformer with hubs and expansive levels where you find stars and shit like 64 sunshine and galaxy, and not 2.5d nsmb like level design with gimped down 3d mario gameplay (like sm3d land and world)
I loved those two games, I don't see why we can't have both

How would that solve anything?
Probably just a Switch version of Splatoon.
No it really isn't.
Those 3 seconds of footage showed so much new stuff, I highly doubt it's just an update
Would be nice if the controllers had some wii mote aiming functionality, that way if I'm on the couch and it's a simple game that used the touch screen I can switch to a wiimote on the tv.
Also Nintendo previously picked wii=wee now they picked swtich which is also a rod used to punish people with. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch_(corporal_punishment)
How would that solve anything?
It would solve the issue with the analogue stick being on the wrong end or whatever the issue is.
It would solve the issue with the analogue stick being on the wrong end or whatever the issue is.
Not in the slightest.
Not in the slightest.
Then what's the issue, and how's it not solved? I don't understand.
Except the sword combat in Skyward Sword was so simplistic it was insulting. Every enemy was a fucking pattern game where you do a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal slash, and occasionally a stab. It is the very definition of having no depth.
"Enemies that are invulnerable to certain attacks and vulnerable to others" features in basically every video game. Would you call Arkham Asylum a shallow button-masher for doing that exact thing?
The combat in Skyward Sword certainly wasn't the Marianas Trench of depth and complexity, but it wasn't a gimmick the way Twilight Princess's motion control was.
Then what's the issue, and how's it not solved? I don't understand.
Look at the diagram again. It's actually showing that it's not the same no matter how you hold it but if they had made it symmetrical it would be.
I think for some people there is - if you're the kind of person who just uses their laptop as a computer, has no interest in building one themselves etc., getting an Xbone of PS4 (and especially the PS4 Pro) makes a lot of sense from a price/performance standpoint (until you start talking online, then it gets muddy). Some people also prefer couch gaming or whatever and that's fair game.
PC is a perfect couch game station. It's how mines set up with a TV, and my monitors all hooked into it and Big Picture Mode.
Not to mention, I have more games that are split screen/local coop/couch coop on my PC than I have for my 360/ps3/ps4 combined.

It's the equivalent of a quick time event. You have an enemy that moves in a specific way and you can tell immediately exactly by their pose that you're supposed to swing your sword a specific way. There's no depth to it, there's no secrets or tricks to discover, and there's no further purpose to the angle you swing your sword. It's a gimmick. Compare that to something like A Link Between World's portrait mechanic and the variety of different, clever ways that's used.
