Bringing BACK The iPhone Headphone Jack - in China
lightning at this point is basically just a way to make sure you have to keep giving money directly to apple for peripherals in the same way the 3ds (charger input) and vita (memory cards and charger input) do, the memory cards are expensive but both ship with chargers that last a while with decent build quality.
apple builds their plug-in accessories cheap on purpose and charge a huge amount for replacements as cheap as the one that came with your phone. It's not even introducing a standard, they just want a physical "Apple DRM plug" that they change every few years once the ecosystem becomes flooded with a wide array of third party accessories that instantly become useless mountains of electronic waste
The big thing is MFi Certification. If a third party wants to make and sell accessories that use the lightning port (everything will now thanks to the iPhone 7) they HAVE to become MFi certified through Apple to make things legit. Of course there's always going to be shitty junk coming out of the woodwork but now for a company to do things legit they have to give who knows how much money to Apple to certify with them to produce MFi products. The specifics of the certifcation, what it costs, and the pros and cons are currently unknown and they have been for years. Nobody knows how much it costs except for the companies that have done it and of course they can't share that information.

Maybe he likes the design? Maybe he likes that the AirPods and the iPhone seamlessly connect because they're both made by Apple? Maybe he's tried other wireless earphones that just ended up dropping out. It's a daft thing to say "I can't believe you spent X on X", everyone has their own life and buy what they want to buy for their own reasons. I have a friend who also has AirPods and loves them, I personally wouldn't buy them but I wouldn't judge other people for doing so
Yep. Make the phone one perfectly solid glass. No ports or anything at all. Not even speakers.
you know how the s8 has glass on both sides? One up them and make the entire thing glass.

I know this is a joke but wireless charging, Bluetooth, and NFC could make this possible. Have 2 water proof holes- phone speaker and mic- and you have an entirely waterproof phone. Or not have those, have it come with a decent Bluetooth headset and have it be very waterproof.

There are already a good number of waterproof phones out that don't have or need wireless charging. They're built to deal with it when water gets in the ports, I think the S8 for example warns you not to use the charging port till it's dry if it gets wet.

Huh didn't realise all other wireless earbuds that are well below $100 had features designed solely for the iPhone such as auto-switching to mono audio when only using one, double tapping to pause and play, and of course the carry case that renders battery life a non-issue

I'm not gonna be too harsh here because I have an expensive wireless headset system at home so I'm being very slightly hypocritical here but...
you essentially listed 3 advantages, one of which solves to fix a problem that doesn't exist on wired headphones (and apple was *not* the first one to do), one that is solved by the pause/play button that's on virtually every wireless headset which is arguably no less convenient, and one that I've probably never heard anyone take issue with. I have plenty of money to throw around on expensive things I probably don't need but I understand using it on airpods about as much as I do beats. I listened to a pair of these once before and while they're not awful or anything they certainly don't sound like $219, I thought they were less than half that

Those features all sound neat but not 219$ neat.
Also I want to point out you said your Airpods are at least as a good as the earphones that came with the phone. That means your 219$ Airpods are at least, not better, then 35$ Earphones that have the sound quality of 15$ earphones.

He can buy whatever he wants but that doesn't make him free from criticism.

That's understandable, but it needs to be constructive criticism so we can at least reply to your post.

This doesn't tells us why the 200$+ wireless earphones can work just as well. Maybe give us a basic comparison between the AirPods and something below 100$, comparing features, audio quality etc. Then you could possibly convince the guy with solid facts to get something cheaper.

Honestly after doing research just now I can't recommend any big brand wireless headphones at all aside from Samsung ones I found. All the big brands charge 100$+ for earphones that give you the sound quality of 30$ earphones.
If you want Wireless headphones that do the exact same thing as Apple's Airpods (aside from changing to mono but that seems like a super useless addition) you can find a ton for around 30$ on Amazon

I'm talking in relative terms here. Bluetooth headphones have in the past been notorious for not having the capacity to:
1. Stay connected consistently
2. Sound adequate, especially with the pricetag in mind
3. Last long enough for regular use
4(an important one for me personally). Look discreet
Those four things are also the same reason as to why I never got a pair of bluetooth headphones in the past.
In the case of the airpods, they sound more than adequate for how I use them(at work, or on the go. Not at home for the most part), they have never disconnected on me, the battery has never dropped lower than 30-40% in the case, and most important to me, they are discreet enough not to be easily seen while using them at work.

Since I usually had my old wired headphones under my shirt so that they don't get caught on anything, that pause/play/volume button on the wire would usually be out of the way to use, with this I just tap twice on the earbuds in my ears. It's an improvement that understandably may seem insignificant unless you owned a pair.
I'll admit they don't necessarily sound as good as their pricetag, but compared to most other wireless headphones, they aren't exactly terrible, and they do it all in a much smaller package. The fact that they were able to even fit everything they needed to fit into earbuds hardly any bigger than the regular apple ones, is just crazy.
