I use Sketchup... I'm one of those people who takes a 3D program made for making boxes, and churns out highly detailed weapons.
Reminds me, I need to put a few of those up here. Once I get some renders done, I'll see what we can do.

Sketchup is really bad for making detailed stuff.
You spend way too much time on stuff that can be done much faster in apps meant for doing that.
if i didnt spent 8 hours building a castle wall in minecraft with my friend i'd have finished my trebuchet texture.
I figured out a nice trick in Maya that gets rid of the seam that shows up on mirrored models.

What, welding them?
no, that still leaves a minor seam in the model.
Unfortunatelly my college uses Blender for the 3D Modelling classes, we're only starting next semester but some students (including myself) are trying to convince the teachers to contact Autodesk about those student versions of Maya or 3ds Max.
It's not impossible to learn how to use it and the techniques you learn (like poly-modeling, sub-d etc.) all apply in every program. So it's not time wasted in any way.

SketchUp is a light CAD program designer for architecture. Whily you can make weapons and stuff in it, why cripple yourself with technology? I'm sure you'd be more effective using a program like Maya or 3dsMax.

This is exactly the reason why I don't understand all the Blender hate. So long as you understand the basics of modeling - edge flow, polygon distribution, proper UVing - you can use literally any program on the market. Modeling is pressing buttons and flicking switches; where those functions are and how you operate those functions are the only defining features of modeling programs.
no, that still leaves a minor seam in the model.
it shouldn't if you weld properly. could you give an example?
PLing, some people like limiting themselves like the kids in mspaint

And I have no idea what any of that is (though I can guess)...
Chapter 6 of lynda.com essentials, I'm coming back for you.
Why do people make 3d renders of minecraft, its easy and unimpressive
I fucking HATE blender for some reason, I have no clue why. I was much better in C4D.

Because it's fun for them? They're not showing off?

i hated the interface, so went over to C4D
remember one time when i was like 10 i tried blender. it left a really bad taste in my mouth and i never want anything to do with that program ever again.
Sintel is still pretty cool though (Blender short).
and one of the Minecraft renders is currently my wallpaper.

Not sure who made it.
Besides, It can actually be quite a challenge to make a good one. Ripping a map from minecraft isn't easy and often you get less than pleasant results from trying to make your own with cubes/displacement/extrusions/voxels and the other 20 million ways to do it
Must agree that DOF looks pretty sweet in minecraft, is there a mod for it?
heh, I wish.
I just got a really dark theme for my computer, my wallpaper (the minecraft one) was much too bright so I threw this together in a few minutes, works alright. Plus, I do like what the Utah Teapot represents.

The wallpaper I had for my second screen works fine with the dark theme.
It counts as Digital 3D art, and I think it's pretty obvious who made it.

Hmm, need to find a way to get Photoshop to have a less grey interface.

no but there is an ambient occlusion mod

There's a mod you can use to get DOF: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=128043
Supposedly doesn't work with ATI cards.

Any hint on how anyone can make that glow in the texture?
Any hint on how anyone can make that glow in the texture?
Usually it's a post process. In vray 2.0 you can do it through lens shader

In mental ray it can also be done with a lens shader.

Just started making some random room, rendered with vray.
Any hint on how anyone can make that glow in the texture?
It was rendered with VRay 2.0, I never actually applied a lens shader. It's just VRayLightMatl with GI turned on.
It's not glow, it's dof blurring, right?

The way doorframe blends with that thing on the bottom of the wall(not sure how it's called) looks really wrong to me.
There are no lights lawl, that scene has DoF but it doesn't look much different without it.
As for the room, it looks nice so far, I agree with johan_sm about the door counter thingy.
Also the walls look kinda splotchy, I know it's common-y but still be nice to fix if it's not intentional.

Yes there are lights. A mesh with lightmtl is a light too...
