Try again? I've been using the UVW tools for years and alone it doesn't hold a candle to what you can do with the textools plugin. Yeah since v8 it's been good (I started using max at v8 and had to teach with it for a few months), but it's got so much more potential. Not having a normalize feature is just unacceptable. It also doesn't have mirroring abilities, edge straightening, etc. Take a look at what textools can do. If you can find just as good and easy alternatives to what it has to offer in vanilla 3ds Max (you can't), then I'll say I haven't broken this barrier you speak of.
It's been a while since I tried textools (v1.6 or something), but you can use edge straightening in Max, at least in 2011. Mirror is something you achieve by unwrapping under a symmetry modifier. But I obviously missed out on a bunch of new features in today's textools, so I should try it again before discussing this further. But still, calling Max's unwrapping tools "useless" is in my opinion closed minded.
[img_thumb]http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/1951/itsagenericminion.png[/img_thumb] I finished the modelling last night, going to work on UV mapping and texturing it today.
Upper arm is way too short and the lower arm is too bulky.
Posting content for content's sake. Speed modelling the Perto Vallarta arch. It's nothing much, and I'm an hour in so far. I should probably work faster but I tend to worry too much about getting something wrong, and then my mind drifts in all sorts of directions. Anyways, Edit: Done. Might texture it.
Right, so I wanted to do some photo realistic rendering. And I also used the vray lens analysis tool to extract distortion data from a 300mm lens mounted on canon eos D1 MkIV. (Lens analysis tool) Then adjusted my vray physical camera to match the real world camera settings. Looks pretty nice however the object is not very special, but it's always fun to combine my two hobbies, photography and CGI.
looks good but I dunno if all the lens analysis is worth it for a simple object like that, especially as there's nothing in the background or around the edges of the frame.
Sure, I thought I'd try it and get to know how it works.
But still, calling Max's unwrapping tools "useless" is in my opinion closed minded
it is a little extreme but there's way too much that they should support by now and just don't. Mirroring in textools is a button click.
How would I get textools working on 2011?
How would I get textools working on 2011?
[editline]16th January 2011[/editline] i am convinced there are snails that work faster then i do
How would I get textools working on 2011?
get max 2010
Wait, what? I have 3ds Max 2011 and TexTools works fine. [img_thumb]http://waddles.teamawol.info/files/69_textools.jpg[/img_thumb] Now I'm thinking i'm missing some major feature or something lawl.
the normalize feature doesnt work [editline]16th January 2011[/editline] at least for me
ah, right. Well, I usually use the default unwrapping anyway. I heard you like.... [img_thumb]http://waddles.teamawol.info/files/73_ren3.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://waddles.teamawol.info/files/74_wall.jpg[/img_thumb] Woo, DoF! [img_thumb]http://waddles.teamawol.info/files/78_ren7.jpg[/img_thumb]
and its done. now how can i get nice render's like ajack's? and the nice ground and, and and everything. :v:
I think Ajacks either uses the Scanline renderer with a Skylight in a plane environment, or VRay with GI. I asked him at one stage but can't actually remember, fairly certain it's skylight though.
im fairly certain its vray with gi
ah, right. Well, I usually use the default unwrapping anyway.
hhhhnfgngngnnnnnnn no wonder you agreed with jeggis, you don't even use unwrapping
hhhhnfgngngnnnnnnn
second'd
I think Ajacks either uses the Scanline renderer with a Skylight in a plane environment, or VRay with GI. I asked him at one stage but can't actually remember, fairly certain it's skylight though.
Vray with GI all the way.
Hey, what'd I do wrong exactly? Hardly fair in a thread like this to infer that I suck and not say what I actually did that was sucky.
Hey, what'd I do wrong exactly? Hardly fair in a thread like this to infer that I suck and not say what I actually did that was sucky.
huh? Nobody said you were bad. You agreed with Jeggis that I'm not seeing the full potential of vanilla Max unwrapping tools, but you say you use the default unwrapping (which is also an awful thing to do 99% of the time). So you're admitting you don't even use the tools after you agreed with his post.
would it be worth getting this? http://shop.3dtotal.com/training/training-ebooks-3dsmax/bugatti-veyron-3dsmax-tutorial.html ive never done car modeling before.

So you're admitting you don't even use the tools after you agreed with his post.
oh right, by the way you said it, seemed like you meant that I don't unwrap..like at all. But simply I'd rather not switch to 2010 purely for better unwrapping tools, as much as they can be annoying at times. As for the Bugatti, I'd say it'd be a good idea, as much as those kind of tutorials often offer complete and comprehensive which can be annoying when it's going on and on about things you already know and it focusing on how to do that specific model and nothing else, depends on the tutorial though, I mean, I havn't read it.
But simply I'd rather not switch to 2010 purely for better unwrapping tools, as much as they can be annoying at times
then don't, but my original point is if you're a texture artist or do a lot of unwrapping in general, vanilla won't suffice.
(which is also an awful thing to do 99% of the time)
I must respectfully disagree. And my original comment wasn't aimed at you, but at the general assumption that Max's unwrapping sucks.
I think i'll try to make the Funktion One IB 218 subwoofer in 3DS Max, anything i should know about?
