Does anyone know how I could go about getting the effect of sand falling down in an hourglass? I know it's probably a simple answer but I don't know where to start. The rest of the model is done, I just have no experience with particles whatsoever.

You could sculpt and then bake down or just use max cloth physics and bake down. I wouldn't do it manually if you're not going to sculpt. Those are really the only two ways people do cloth. I'd bake some normals no matter what if possible.

I saw it in a tutorial vid about vray earlier; or at least something very similar.
