Project Valkyrie is a design for a manned, interstellar spacecraft that can go all the way up to 92% of lightspeed and doesn't require any physics-breaking magic. You may remember it as the ISV Venturestar from Avatar.
But since there were no renders of any Valkyrie starship (Only the cover of Pellegrino's book, Flying to Valhalla, and the diagrams), I decided to try my hand at some basic modeling.
Book cover:

Diagram:

Needless to say... Some degree of artistic license was required. I'm thinking about bringing these to Pellegrino himself to see if he appreciates it.

EDIT: The big ship is the interstellar cruiser, the small ship tied by mooring lines is what they'd use to move around the stellar system or some shit. The red glowy things are heat radiators, and the open dome is for the telescope.
You could at least make SOME effort to make the lighting look like it's in space. ( a single omni light with raytrace shadows off in the distance.. )

Trying it out, looks really awesome
And it hides my horrible materials and general lack of textures.
Show a pic?
It's strange, I consciously know spacecraft are always half-illuminated half-utterly-dark, but sometimes the degree of... Call it ADHD for the moment... is amazing.

Why does your grass look like the terrain of a dessert?

because i have no idea what i am doing

i am happy with this

much more fitting
It fits on a desert scene. Also it looks very nice. Good work, Kybalt.
It just looks.. off. Doesn't look natural or realistic. I think it might be the lighting or maybe the materials, and also, the chamfer on the building looks ridiculous and stupid. chamfer those edges more so it doesn't look like a giant papercraft.
The corners are IMO too hard and sharp to be realistic. The whole building looks like a chamfered box, not a building. Try to break up the blockiness with smaller details and round some of the corners. If the building is stationed in the desert there should be some erosion present, unless it's freshly built. It'll probably look better when textured, but this is just my two cents.

I like everything else on the scene, however.
Could do with some sand building up around the edges of the buildings and objects if possible
So I was playing Deus Ex and wanted to make something related.

Tried to make it into an avatar, but I only got it to the minimum of 780kb before the quality turned to shit. :(
zomg massive nostalgia. I played the original Deus Ex ages ago, when it was new even. It was a brilliant game and I loved the intro, I actually remember just leaving it on that screen and watching for like half an hour at a time.
Though I distinctly remember it being blue and glowy.
Actually the spinning logo thing is all metal colored, but there was some blue glow behind it and the text. There's also the occasional lightning bolts coming from the ball in the center.
Yea, that's what I meant by 'blue and glowy'. I can see how I worded it wrong though. It's still fricking awesome, I like the Lighting (HDR Map?), you should add Lightning =3
Okay, two other renders.

I thought this was kinda cool. Way off scale land mass wise.

Looks cool, working on something very similar for a video but trying to work with atmosphere.

Yeah it's hdri lit. I might be able to add the lightning effects as post process since I have no idea how to do it in Max, but it'll most likely turn out crap.

Just playing with vray fog, really liking these experiments, pretty atmospheric.

Texture looks very poor
i think those big green box's are to big :/
Compared to the people standing next to it.
Yup. And the concrete barriers are too big. And the building needs smoother, weather worn corners.

that's pretty awesome, add some insterility and it'll be even more awesome
First time rendering something in max with lights. The background was done in photoshop then imported as an environment map.

The particle system for the engines isn't finished, I need to find a way to use 'billboards' of smoke particles somehow, plain dots is too inefficient for my taste. Anyone got any ideas?
Yup. And the concrete barriers are too big. And the building needs smoother, weather worn corners.
I agree. You would never see corners that sharp, especially in a place where sand storms that ware down buildings are probably frequent.
no clue how i could fix the edges without having to redo my textures

more or less final version
