I just downloaded a 30-day free trial for Maya 2011.

After a few good youtube videos, and after visiting an Art Institute Campus, I decided to shoot early for modeling...
Yeah, bare basics. NURBS are annoying.
Progress! Around 4-5 hours of work so far, I think.

got a quick question, how many frames per second is the sdk model viewer?
got a quick question, how many frames per second is the sdk model viewer?
I'm assuming you mean Source SDK, if so, it stays at around 65 FPS for me.

nono, i ment the model animations, how many frames is there in one second of the sequence.
never mind, it was 30 fps

The godrays from the sun seem to appear and disappear too quickly.

Yeah, that's basically how camera and lenses work. :P If you quickly obscure the strong light source causing the lens flare, it disappear at an instant.
The problem here, though, is that the lens flare makes the surroundings appear brighter, and when it suddenly disappears, so does the ambient light. That would happen in real life, but now that you know it's not real, it just seams wrong.
But enough jabber.. Thank you for your feedback. :)
EDIT:
My tunnel vision's cleared, and I realize you're absolutely right. I could've stretched the fading over a second, instead of 5 frames.
Still, it would look weird, as the sun only need 5 frames from being all visible, and totally hidden...
Still need some good tutorials for Maya2011

Hmmm... Maybe a please could help?

how about that good old google?

Digital tutors is good to start out

Yeah you got it right. Don't change it.
But one thing that could be improved is that often even though the sun is out of frame it will still shine glare on the lens. So you could try to simulate that as the angle increases at the beginning and end.
[editline]11:54PM[/editline]
However a real lens flare doesn't increase the brightness of things behind it, it obscures them. So you might want to render the lens flare seperately and composite it over using just the "normal" blend mode to fix that. Alternately "lighten only" because a lens flare that makes things darker is kinda unnatural too.
Also, the stars really shouldn't be visible in the same shot as the sun. Not even just a planet illuminated by the sun.

Notice how the sun isn't actually in the frame.

Could also try to add rim lighting. That looks like it's missing tbh.
Okay all of my friends are on holiday so it's time to get back to modelling the BMX, if I can find 3dsmax and install it tomorrow.
The thread has not been busy today, so I will post these:

The first picture turned out a bit white-washed.
These are 2 variants of the Gauss Rifle that will appear in FWE with the original. Another variant will be one with both attached.
The quality of the scope and laser sight turned out better than the weapon because the texture for the Gauss Rifle is... less than decent. I'll eventually redo it before it is added.
Dat gamma.
Dayum. Das sexy.
Hi guys, great stuff going on here!
Thought id post a piece (:
This is my first attempt at something with 3ds max that actually mattered.

I can tell you ripped the models but other than that, That's some great posing. I like it.

Too shiny.
Too shiny.
I thought something similar when the rendering finished, I wanted the armor to be shiny, but not the black fiber between the joints etc.
However, i quite liked how the specular lighting came out on the helmet :D

Anyway, what renderer is that? Looks awfully lot like scanline?
Please port this into Crysis or Gmod! :buddy:
I shall see if I have time to learn how to do that when I get the model ready :3
Heres a youtube upload of the uzis highpoly basemesh, I think I shall leave it like this and start texture it and after that make the lowpoly.(Im lazy, I know)

^^ That Uzi is really nice looking. If it's 10k polys, you can port it into Crysis without having to optimize it I believe.
Anyways, I'd recommend going to Crymod.

I let it render for about 15 minutes. Keep in mind that the ground doesn't normally look like that, I've changed the material to make it a bit more interesting.

I want GPU Vray.
Okay, I seriously need to learn modelling/texturing now. Right now.
What would be the best starter tutorial for 3Ds Max 2010? I have absolutely no experience with modelling.

lynda.com has the fucking best starter tutorials ever. to bad it costs.
I never like Lynda.com much. they seem to cover every single thing with in a program, but in very little detail. So while doing the 3dsmax tutorials I learnt some basic reactor physics stuff, some animation, some basic polygon modelling. But I'd be stuck if I wanted to make some complex geometry, I hadn't been taught much more than how to create shapes and extrude and bevel polygons, and apply some basic modifiers.
