What do you mean lacking light? As in no light at all or very little light?
Does anyone know how I can get a material to tile over my model (sort of like with brushes in hammer)? I just need to make a render of a blocky model, it doesn't need to be uvmapped... I'm using 3ds Max 9.

UVW Mapping modifier, just change the tiling on it and bam.

Your hdr map looks kinda strange, but that aside, did you turn on GI or FG or whatever you use? And if yes, did you load hdri into light slot(I am not sure about this, I do not use mr, but in vray there is background slot and an emitter slot)
Have you checked to see if your normals are facing the correct direction?

yes and yes
[editline]03:42PM[/editline]
and i loaded the hdri into the light slot yes.
[editline]03:44PM[/editline]
i tried flipping the normals, it did nothing so i unflipped them.
here's the same render as in that picture from a different angle

Could you post screenshot of your render settings and what hdr map you're using?
Also try with a different hdr map. If problem persists, it's settings. If problem is gone, it's the map.
trying out vray while waiting for some more helps.

does vray cost a lot of money cuz im kinda diggin these renders.

these settings?
Ok I tried MR hdr in maya and what I can say is that turning on GI does not work for me either. But if I turn on FG, it works just fine.
I use vray, and it's soo worth it.
Actually you 2 are just doing one thing wrong, you import the HDR file in the environment options and then drag and drop it into the material editor, not the other way around.
Here's a video that makes it clearer:
http://vimeo.com/7374589
Now I just have to figure out how to make an invisible material that can still have shadows casted on it so I can cast shadows on the "floor" of my HDR map :v:

of all the other shit that could have been fucked up. :suicide:
Where can I download the max 2010 trial? 2011 is horrible.
what is wrong with 2011.
anyway,
importing it through there did not fix it. however, i cranked up the multiplier on the skylight to 15000 and got this.
\
something is still wrong, could it be the materials im using for my objects?

one one hand its a buncha tubes/cylinders, on the other hand, i think you could continue it into a nice camera or something.
I've run out of ideas... Can't think of anything...
Partly because I can't figure out how to texture things in Blender 2.5...

I was thinking I was out of ideas too. But then I learned that idea doesn't have to be original. Just look at someone else's work, look around you, look for some pics on the net.
When I am out of ideas I just watch some movie and model a random item/scene from that movie.
I was really bored.

So I modeled a sprite, Because I can.
It don't look modeled.

I didn't want to post a side view because I still haven't finished the UV Mapping entirely, So has a few weird bits.
Update on my original, yeh it's a bunch of Prims but, so is life...
