The reason for that is because max is NOT a painting or sculpting app.
Max 2011 can paint pretty well, it has layers, blending modes, stamps & stencils and so on.
Max 2011 is great once you get used to it, i still don't like the floating settings panel when you extrude and shit.

Also, sexiest viewport capture everrr.
I envy you, I cannot for the life of me texture, its not a photoshop thing its just I cannot grasp the concept of mapping but I am really good at making materials.
ANYWAY heres an update on my GM ti has much more detail then before

this is my last image before I finish it, my main 3d modeling program is Sketchup 7.
This isnt a rendered image.
How is sketchup? I hear it's pretty sub-par compared to max and maya and such.

People who say the program is sub par is not used to the mechanics of the program. Id say that is it missing allot like proper texturing"not that it cant but right now its way to hard to texture in sketchup", rigging support, and high poly handling "it slows down"
Im not the best when it comes to sketchup, Heres some good references

http://illsteir.deviantart.com/
http://googlesketchup.deviantart.com/
Im not saying sketchup is as powerful as 3ds cause obviously its not but im not saying it cant produce impressive things.
I wasn't gonna show any more of this model until it was complete but heres my progress since I last posted which was about 2hours ago, notice I was able to make impressive amount of detail in that time also was able to render it with good settings.

Id say download the demo and use it for 2-3 months. I guarantee you will have fun with it though if you are experienced you will notice it is handicapped without plugins.
The best advice I can say is browse the sketchup 3d warehouse and google search it so that you can get an idea of how it is.

Do you plan on selling it on Turbosquid, I would think it'd sell like hotcakes.
I havn't the slightest clue why but it reminds me of Eva from WALL-E.
Nevertheless, nice work.

A piece of wood i made, same work-flow as before, excluding beer.
it looks good but the black indenty parts seem really flat, which i guess is fine unless this model is gonna be seen close up.

Slapped some pieces together. :smug:
looks good. really good.

AA is off. but it looked like that with it on too.
AA and maybe subpixel mapping.
It's hard to render something if it's less than a pixel wide.
so how can i fix it
AA and maybe subpixel mapping.
Try

Holy shit!
They really did some improvement on the viewport hardware shading.
DoF? didn't expect that.

Dof has been there forever and it's not really a shader.
I exported my sexy wood into crysis.

I also setup constraints so it breaks and stuff...

Maybe I am really bad at texturing and rigging in 3ds is a little confusing for me right now, I know how to do it in maya but I give up on that program after 3ds 2009 came out.
