Surely he'd be more overhyped than not "all that good"?

Oh Google, you rascal.
Yes.
Don't listen to OP. Listen to me: font of Lovecraftian knowledge.
he's gotta to be good if metallica made 2 songs about one of his characters.
I haven't read anything by Lovecraft but I had similar problems with Orwell. Everyone just loves his stuff so much and then I read it and it wasn't that great at all. It just sounds like a bunch of fear mongering.

Orwell isn't that fun to read, but his ideas and messages are incredible. Also Animal Farm is the best description of the Russian revolution out there.
But why the hell was this thread bumped?
That's the lamest most cliche thing I have ever heard and belongs in a retarded anime fan-fic
Not really. All of his stories (That I've read anyway, that's a few from the Necromonicon) are first person. If the character can't describe the unimaginable horror given form, how can you expect to know about it? The character doesn't know, you don't know. It's better that way, more immersive.
I've read some of Lovecraft's stuff and it's amazing. It's very interesting to read about people whos mental health is failing them because of different reasons, people going insane and so. It's like he is writing storys that takes place in peoples head and the actual world just works as a background-thing.
It's one of those bumps where it's from not that long ago that you can legitimately complain about it, but still rather annoying.
Just gonna say this, James Joyce could beat Lovecraft in a fist fight.

Well he is Irish
I'm a fan of Stephen King, I'm actually reading Black House right now. If King is a fan of Lovecraft, than I respect him. Have not read any of his books though.
Well he is Irish
Scrawny Skinny Psychotic man Vs Scrawny Skinny Psychotic man
The reason you don't like his work is because it was written in the early 1900s, and you were born in the late 1900s.

Almost, but it's
Scrawny Skinny Psychotic man Vs Scrawny Skinny Psychotic Irishman
The Irish gives him the little extra oomph
He doesn't describe monsters thoroughly because it allows your imagination to shape it into the most horrible thing TO YOU. What's scary to one folk isn't to another.

Is this thread still going?
This thread has almost convinced me to purchase one of his books. What one do you think is the best?

He never published a book, you can buy the bulk of his works, consisting of short stories and various novellas in various collections, though.
"The Necronomicon" seems to be popular although the cover wears out rather quickly. Consult Amazon.
For a second, I thought this could be substantial compensation for long-lost Lair ... until I noticed last post date. Damn, why am I always returning here when everyone else left?!
While I do agree that the internet tends to overrate Lovecraft, I understand the reason why he doesn't describe the monsters. He wants to speak to the reader's imagination, which has potential to be much more frightening than a few paragraphs written on page. Descriptions are very static, whereas the imagination is dynamic.

Well this voices almost exactly the same thing I was going to post.
Also a book about being stalked by a rapist could be absolutely terrifying. The protagonist wouldn't actually get raped, though. It would just seem like they were going to be.
...Marble Hornets?
Which H.P. Lovecraft story was that?
I didn't mean to subvert this thread, i just wanted to make a little contradictory quip. You guys should stop being such pussies, i was interested and wanted to comment further on this but no one can take it.
He's pretty much the only racist out there whose racism I can just shrug off and go, "Oh, Howard," because everything else about him was so awesome.
also, on the racist subject, it is pretty unfair to call someone from that era racist. you have to take things like racism into context, because everybody acted that way back in the day, it was just the way things were. it would be like accusing fundamentalist christians from the middle ages of being close minded towards an atheist
I've never read any of his books before.
Which one should I buy first?

I'd say go for one of the compilations.
'Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre'
'The Road to Madness'
'Dreams of Terror and Death'
Those are all good.
