If HP Lovecraft is that good, how come he's dead.
You know you were a good author when after you die people try and dig up your body to reanimate you.

When Twilight stans try to do this 40 years from now you'll be sorry you said that
This thread is more tepid than I expected it to be.
Good job keeping it on a civil adult level, everyone.
The way you describe it, you could make any famous author sound bad.
EDIT: That sounded bad, though. You are certainly right, he IS overrated.
Lovecraft is great. He influenced a lot of today's horror writers, including Stephan King, who called Lovecraft "The twentieth-century horror story's dark and baroque prince."
I have the book that says that on the back as well.

It was actually right next to me

This always happens in Lovecraft threads
Civil people are drawn to him
I think I want my tombstone to say, "I am not Providence."

That sort of just shows that he draws in some crazies...
HP Lovecraft took the concept of circular logic and turned it into monster stories.
"The super dark deep evil beings are invisible so they're always everywhere and anywhere at the same time and nobody knew and they're godlike beings because they made themselves that way because they're godlike beings."
[editline]12:38PM[/editline]
^ Lovecraft's first story ^
No
You know it's true.
The concept of incomprehensible super duper dimensional beings is what Lovecraft uses when he can't think of something legitimately frightening.
"These aliens are so beyond our senses that you can't even understand them so even though you can't possibly be afraid of them you should be afraid of them because of that."
[editline]12:41PM[/editline]
What ever happened to scaring people with the simple "there is an axe murderer in your house" stuff? I seriously doubt we've stopped fearing real psychopaths.
You're right needs more ghosts
[editline]12:42PM[/editline]
And zombies
I'm sayin why couldn't Lovecraft just drop the self flattery and just write a story about someone being chased by a rapist or something?
[editline]12:43PM[/editline]
Rape is scary.
[editline]12:43PM[/editline]
Nonexistent giant Zoidbergs aren't
About the same way I feel about Stephen King.
He writes good books, I know that, and I appreciate his talent.
But I don't like them.
I'm sayin why couldn't Lovecraft just drop the self flattery and just write a story about someone being chased by a rapist or something?
That is neither scary, nor does it make for an interesting book.
"June 19th 1937: Holy shit a rapist is chasing me, OH FUCK THERE HE IS.
June 20th 1937: Holy shit I got raped yesterday"
Lovecraft IS that good. I can counter anything you have against him!

What kind of sociopath doesn't find rape scary?
[editline]12:46PM[/editline]
Jesus Christ it's RAPE
Lovecraft IS that good. I can counter anything you have against him!

Not really. It's a bunch of random babbling about being insane and monsters that isn't very interesting and doesn't amount to anything.
Fuck Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe is where its at
What kind of sociopath doesn't find rape scary?

I wouldn't even read a book with rape in it. I don't want to read that. It's sick. What's wrong with you?
Not really. It's a bunch of random babbling about being insane and monsters that isn't very interesting and doesn't amount to anything.
Honestly the dude doesn't seem to have a grasp on how insanity even works.
Formula writers are cool

How does insanity work, Dr. Lankist?
What kind of sociopath doesn't find rape scary?

Jesus Christ it's RAPE
We all know what rape is. Stephen King is basically the most successful horror writer ever. He's written 17 bajillion books and I'm not sure one of them has ever been about rape.
Rape isn't scary, it's sad. I don't consider Night horror even though the Holocaust was shit.
I think that was one of the first times I agreed with Lankist.
Fuck Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe is where its at
Overrated.
Half the books with Stephen Kings name on it aren't even his.
Same with Koontz.

Some people enjoy rape. :sax:
And something you can see, isn't necessarily scary as you know where and what it is, and you can fight back. What would be more scary, seeing a guy chasing you, who you can fight, or seeing only the shadows, or the evidence that a creature is following you?
Fuck Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe is where its at
I like Poe. But god damn is it overrated.
Half the books with Stephen Kings name on it aren't even his.

Carry: By Stophen Kung

It's clever discriptions that make you play the whole thing through in your own head. Also you're generalizing.
Lovecraft's work was the first piece of literature to actually scare me.
