Based on the current geopolitical situation, it could very well be. I haven't heard anything about the Mayans having to do with this, but I have the gut feeling it just might happen.

People often say its because the Mayan Calendar ends on dec 21st 2012, when, infact, it doesn't it just begins anew.

Panic spreaders, conspiracy theorists and people who seek attention say just "end of the world". "End of the world as we know it" can mean many things. From ice age to inventing FTL drive.

Nope, just the start of the 14th cycle, no real different from us and the end of a century or milennia or even decade, except their cycle (instead of say a decade) is around 395 years, at which point the mayan calendar will be 5520 years old. There's nothing mystical or hidden about it, it's just liek us going from december 1999 to january 2000. It's also the way it is because they simply had a different way of counting than we do.
