Yeah, working at Kroger (US Grocery Store Chain) I made $7.35 per hour starting out. When I became a cashier it went to $7.45 woo for a whole ten cent raise with more responsibilities, more that can go wrong, and you get to stand in one place for 6-8 hours. As a courtesy clerk sure I did a lot of manual labor, but at least I got to move around and escape for a few minutes every couple of hours to take a short break to slow down. As a cashier your work doesn't end until your shift is over; funnily enough the only day that was ever slow for me as a cashier was Black Friday last year since people were elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I loved being a cashier though, it was a lot of fun; but with how hard I had to work and the inconvenient hours I had I could've used a little more pay, especially with trying to get through school and pay for other necessities.
Oh hey, a fellow Kroger worker. I'm not a cashier, but I'm in a very similar boat back in deli. A lot of hard work, inconvenient hours that are impossible to change for so many convoluted reasons (The scheduling is fucking nuts back in the deli due to how many people we have in the department coupled with bullshit union seniority.), and it all amounts to minimum wage. Then some of my friends, who do far less work for more pay with better hours, complain that their job is boring. Pfft... I'd like to see them work a Saturday as a deli clerk in the largest Kroger in Michigan.

Although, I do support the Union I just absolutely hated some of the rules like Seniority get better hours because as a cashier we were always evaluated on our performance and were required to be at a certain level; with me being relatively new I had to fight for hours while maintaining my ELMS score (I did manage to be Number 2 in Zone J, the Atlanta Zone.). The big problem with Seniority though is that some of my older coworkers absolutely hated their jobs and did quite poorly but still got good hours because they had been there longer, so instead of someone who was efficient and hardworking, people who were often complained about by customers were the ones always working. It really sucked when my first store closed down and I had to transfer to another one further away because the people there were pretty rude and inconsiderate. Everyone loved rolling hours of people lower than them, so if one of the higher senior cashiers only got 32 hours for the week I'd often get rolled and lose a 6 hour shift so they can get to 38 hours; hell, even on my last week of working there when I needed money most before I left I had 24 scheduled hours but two different coworkers rolled me for two of my shifts. What's worse? The one that rolled a my 7 hour shift didn't even come in, so not only did I lose hours, but no one gained any. The biggest issue with that store was that there was no controlling party on the front end, my front end manager kind of just let things go; in fact, a lot of the senior cashiers didn't even abide by rules regarding seniority and rolling of hours and would often just pick which shifts they wanted and write it on the schedule without consulting a manager. Even if my manager was told she would shrug it off because she absolutely hated conflict and avoided it as much as possible. A few times the Union got involved but they weren't able to do much because so much power is given to senior members that all they can do is throw down a few warnings and hope it scares someone, which it never really did.
This is pretty terrible, to think that Hong Kong isn't the only place where stuff like this happens. Damn...
Mummy, don't cry
FUUUUUUUU, somebody fucking get them out of there!
As bad as it seems, it's a lot better than being on the streets.
