back on track. sorry. Any news on when mubarak is supposed to speak "today"?
Some time between "soon" and "imminently"
[editline]1st February 2011[/editline]
He is talking now, BBC and Al Jazeera are showing it with translations (and so are CNN it seems).
I don't think my friend fully understands the feelings of the protestors:
21:06 - fizz112: i think itll probably be best if he stays for rest of his term tho
So, what did Mubarak just say?
So, what did Mubarak just say?
He wants to stay in power until the election (7 months), but won't rerun.

What's he saying?
Oh, well the protesters won't like that. 7 months is a long time to fuck over the country some more.

He is planning to stand down at the end of his term, and get parliament to review the constitution (to allow other parties I think) and he plans to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
There's some other stuff he said, but that was the main stuff. The BBC translator seemed to have problem and had to correct her self a few times.
Edit:
Al Jazeera are showing crowds either cheering or booing, I can't quite tell. Can anyone tell?
ok ,. before you people think , let me tell you this
1- when mubarak became president on 1981 , he promised not to run for it more than 2 times ( current is the 6th)
2- the parliment he is talking about , 97% of its members ,are from his ruling party , 3% opposition that he chose ( we dont even know them )
Mubarak: I actually was planning not to re-run again for presidential elections. So I won't run again for the November elections!!!
---
Edit :
How he became president : he was vice president when the president got "assassinated" , and he directly became president by parliament agreement

Booing like fuck.
Booing like fuck.
Ah, Al Jazeera just cleared that up for definite. Apparently they are shouting leave.
This can't go well
I can see this ending in just fucking chaos with Mubarak fleeing for his life somewhere

Apparently he said he will "die on the soil of Egypt", suggesting that he doesn't plan to flee.
Wow
He's an idiot
I dont even have any words for this :|
Also, Mr Sun:
This inspired me to learn arabic too.
And I read the Crucible, nice analogy lol.
Im actually interested in keeping up with Egyptian politics after the revolution too.
thirty thousand people chanting "leave leave leave" in unison is pretty damn impressive.

I'm predicting the military decide to take him out then, if he refuses to go. People protesting for 7 months will utterly destroy Egypt, so it's going to come down to the military who've said they aren't going to attack the people, so you can figure what's gonna go on. Either that, or they let the people march free through the city to where Mubarak is
The tens of thousands of people in Tahrir Square respond to Mr Mubarak's announcement by shouting "Get out!" in unison.
:frog:
:frog:
The second plague that hit Egypt was indeed frogs.
The BBC's Mark Mardell in Washington says US officials now believe that Mr Mubarak standing aside in September is no longer enough. Western diplomats have come to an agreement with the US state dept that Mr Mubarak must go now - there can't be reform while he is still at the helm, he says.
:unsmith:
Holy fuck Glenn Beck is insane. He just said these protests in Egypt aren't about freedom or democracy, but enforcing Islamic law upon the world. Where the fuck does he come up with this shit?
shit guys! Pro Mubarak supporters have entered and there is conflict between the groups! they're throwing rocks! SOMEONE is firing!

I think this is in Alexandria.
Al Jazeera are showing shots being fired in Alexandria, is it like that in Cairo as well?

How can somebody be pro-Mubarak?
Ok, I gave him some slack before that comment
now I am fully labelling him as retarded...
The BBC's Jim Muir in Tahrir Square says some people are calling for an even bigger demonstration on Friday - while others are saying "No - tomorrow".
Mubarak will be gone by the end of the week probs
How can somebody be pro-Mubarak?
Weren't there rumours of undercover police officers earlier?
Police/ect. dressed in civilian clothes again?

Does he still have enough power to do that?
There's stilll the armed, conscripted and brainwashed police.
I'm not doubting you on that, but could you explain a bit on the "conscripted" and, more specifically, "brainwashed" parts?
I thought the police force was corrupt, you're making it sound like they're stormtroopers.
Does he still have enough power to do that?
He has as much power as people allow him to have. If people do what he says he still has power.
not only in Alexandria, in mehella city also
