At least as per 2002, the city was the largest shithole ever to grace the earth. Judging by the images I see in google earth, it's gotten a lot better. No obliterated buildings anymore, there's some streets with cars on them. The gist of it: The Russians showed up to put a stop to the rebel activities there (after numerous terrorist attacks by chechen rebels) and basically, the city turned into a warzone. Then the Russians hung back, and began pounding the entire city with artillery, bombings, and general rocket fire from helicopters. The city was basically stalingrad for a good 7 years or so. 1994 - 2002.

So one of these tribes striving for power adopted radical form of Islam (Mujahideen) and got aid from dozens of foreign fighters from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan Albania and Afghanistan. Also some aid from United States as well. A war ensued to drench these foreign fighters from the land who were launching a jihad. The tribes soon came to there sense and were like oh shit we fucked up and switched sides against these foreigners fighters which is where second war begin. Do not come them rebels they are foreigner radical Islamic fighters launching a jihad against natives people killing children and beheading women. You must learn about the propaganda of words in the media. Also Chechen were front line soldiers combating Georgia during the Russian-Georgian war
