I don't know of any shops in Canada, so I can't be of any help there. I'm sure you'll be able to find something though. I'd recommend a long-handled razor only if you have really long hands. I find the shorter ones allow them to be more maneuverable, which is pretty important if you want to use a DE well. My Merkur has a shorter handle than my Parker and for this reason, I really prefer it. As far as things to try, maybe you could find a nice superspeed or fatboy on ebay canada. Soaps and creams worth checking out are, Castle Forbes, Tabac, TOBS, Geo F. Trumper, and Musgo Real. I'd probably go with the last first, it's the easiest to lather I hear.

The slant-razor came in today, it looks like it was run over by a truck. However, it shaves more smoothly than my other razors. It's also loud, you can really hear it slicing stubble. It's a little more aggressive than normal, but it didn't nick me. I think this is my new favorite razor. Progress on the left, Slant on the right. You can see what I mean when I said it looks like it was run over by a truck. feather/slant combo = lightsaber The sharpest blade at the best cutting angle. It sliced through every hair on my face without me feeling a thing. It was pretty incredible.
So after a bit of research I've found out that my straight razor is a 6/8” Sheffield Straight Razor by Steer & Webster(made in 1861[seriously how bad ass is that]). The scales need to be replaced and it's dull. I have a whetstone from my grandmother, and I have no idea what the grade of it is. Using that alone, could I get a proper hone, enough to get a shave out of?
My safety razor and blades and everything is coming in a few days, I can't wait. I seriously don't even want to shave until they come, electric razors are so bad.

I don't know how it looks, but I'd guess from a razor of that age you might just want to get it professionally honed first before you actually try using it. I'd start a thread with your question and a picture of the straight on straightrazorplace.com, the people there will be able to much better answer your question than I can. I have yet to still get my first straight. Something unrelated, I went to "The Great Shave 2012" last night and had a good time. The free drinks, generous swag-bag, samples, and the raffle prize I won (Parker Horn Razor) was far beyond worth more than the 20 dollar entry. Holy shit, you lucky bastard!
Updated OP, added more content and updated my recommendations. The issue with chrome might be fixed now. I'm really fancying this singing-straight, it's 200 dollars though.. I figured if I'd get myself a straight, I may as well get one of the better ones. [img]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71nTN2j2kOL.jpg[/img]
I don't know how to word my fear of cutting my own throat with the straight. Fuck. [editline]29th October 2012[/editline] FUCK PAGE KING FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK NO CONTENT FUCK!
At worst you'd give yourself a cut the length of the blade touching your throat/face. Even then you reaction would to move your hand/the object hurting you away. I practice on my arms with new blades, and to test the sharpness of my straight razor.
So my razor was supposed to come today, but there was kinda a hurricane and stuff, so I'm not sure if it will.

[QUOTE=yerer;38249333]So my razor was supposed to come today, but there was kinda a hurricane and stuff, so I'm not sure if it will.[/QUOTE] what did you order exactly anyways? [QUOTE=credesniper;38244576]At worst you'd give yourself a cut the length of the blade touching your throat/face. Even then you reaction would to move your hand/the object hurting you away. [QUOTE=Lamar;38252059] what did you order exactly anyways? [/QUOTE] I got the Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor, some proraso shaving soap and aftershave, a tweezerman shaving brush. I think I got astra blades, but I can't remember now.
So seeing as Halloween is today, I was thinking that maybe it would be a good opportunity to make the youngins aware that when they start shaving, they don't have to settle for the Gillette Warp 9 Ultra 20-blade facefucker. A little background. I think giving out just candy is boring. The houses that gave out little toys were my favorite when I went trick or treating. I bought a 100 pack of Feather blades from Amazon, and I'm wanting to pass them out as Halloween treats. I have stuff to make candy here, and I'm thinking of making something like those old candy eggs that had prizes inside of them. I'll keep the razor inside the wrapper, of course. Do you think this is a good idea? I'm not entirely sure, because a lot of these kids would probably lose the razor blades before they hit puberty. It's just that I REALLY wish someone would have handed me a real razor when I was young. [img]http://www.shavingstuff.com/pictures/featherDEblades.JPG[/img]

This is a joke, right. Please tell me this is a hilarious joke. [editline]31st October 2012[/editline] If that is not a joke it is an awful idea. There are unpleasant connections between Halloween candy and razor blades.
so I should just be less discreet about it and give it to them more upfront? I could just hand them out by the package I guess. But then I wouldn't be handing out candy and it be kind of weird If I just handed out the blades by themselves [img]http://www.shavingstuff.com/pictures/featherblades.png[/img]
There's no way you're gonna make it not weird
i wouldn't do it if i were you, police would be at your door as soon as mothers notice kids are getting razor blades. [editline]31st October 2012[/editline] [SUP][SUP][SUP]just give me some[/SUP][/SUP][/SUP]
yeah it's a bad idea don't do it
Just hide individual razors inside of Reese's Cups so the parents don't notice and think you're weird. [editline]31st October 2012[/editline] [sp] It should be immediately obvious to you that giving razor blades to children is a bad idea.[/sp] [editline]31st October 2012[/editline] I got this razor variety pack in the mail off amazon, along with a DE razor and some proraso: [img]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71E7dSoxKUL.jpg[/img] Not sure which blade I should start with, any tips? I'm scared of the feather razor, since I've heard they're pretty sharp, and I don't want to kill myself.
Just finished my first shave with a double edged safety razor. Have to say, I was pretty terrified the first pass haha, but by the second pass it was pretty awesome. I missed a few hairs due to lack of skill, but it feels awesome.
Don't fear the feathers, I use them everytime and I can't remember the last time I nicked myself. I'd suggest starting with the Astras, those are nice mild and smooth blades. The only thing about feathers is you have to treat them more carefully, they require a light touch. Edit: btw the kids that rang were very excited to receive the feathers, they've never seen anything like it before.
Just got done shaving, my face feels great, holy shit. It wasn't any worse than a disposable razor when it came to nicks, I had a really small one. Can't wait to shave again tomorrow. On a different note, does anyone have a good method for treating razor burn? I've got it on my neck, not sure of the best way to get rid of it.
I've actually stopped getting razor burn all together ever since I started using a DE. There could be many things you can do to prevent it though. A light touch and no pressure with the blade is very important, if you're already doing that try "upgrading" your cream and using an aftershave. You can also try cold-water shaving and see if it suits you, a lot of people say it works well for them.
I haven't shaved in about two months. Today I was told I look like "wolverine or something"
So, did Lamar get on the news yet for literally handing razor blades out to children?
I'll be doing a 3 part review on Saturday. What it will be, is a surprise.
I have to buy a new razor. The Parker I bought when I first started this broke on the 2nd day using it. The little metal ring on the handle popped off and it comes off whenever I shave. I might just take some electrical tape and tape it together but I might just buy a new one when Christmas rolls around. [IMG]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41LooajZVWL._SL500_AA300_.jpg[/IMG]
That's a shame, unfortunately parkers are usually of a lesser quality. Go for a short handle razor this time, you'll find it easier to maneuver. I'd recommend a Gillette superspeed or merkur 34HD/37 slant.
