Just took the next step into manly hood:
1 x Proraso Pre and Post Shaving Cream
1 x Merkur Progress Long Handle 510001
1 x Two Of A Kind DE Blade Sample Pack
1 x Bloc Osma Alum Block Post Shave Treatment
1 x Silvertip Brush by Traditional Shaving Supplies
1 x Taylor of Old Bond St Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl
Never looked more forward to a shave before...
wow that's quite a haul of excellent kit, best of luck on your shaventure when it all comes in. Since you ordered a Merkur Progress, I'd recommend you try not to adjust the settings too often as they might throw off your ability to learn to shave with it. Keep it on 1-2 1/2 and you should be alright.
Cheers. I was tossing up between the 34C and the progress for awhile but decided that the progress was probably the best one for me.
I'll take your advice for the first few attempts and play around with it from there :D
gl, the progress can throttle up to be a really aggressive razor. The "1" setting is likened to Gillette razors from the 70s while "5" is like a straight razor shave. It's a really good razor though. I have the normal length handle and it's very hefty.
Now that I have my unidentified straight razor sharpened, I can begin using it.
Although I'm wondering if I should get some fancy schmancy shaving cream for it. When I went to my fathers barber they finished with a small straight razor and a shaving cream that didn't foam. Any suggestions?
I don't think using what you have now will kill you, but the shaving cream that didn't foam as you mentioned pretty much sounds like the traditional creams in the OP. Creams like Taylor of Old Bonds Street, Musgo Real, and Arko.
For best results with whatever you're using, just let it sit on your face for 2 minutes for it to soak in and soften your beard. This overlooked part of prep really makes a noticeable difference.
what kind was it anyways? Fortunately you don't always need a brush for everything out there.
I bought the Taylor's Shaving Soap and the brush that you had in the OP.
[editline]24th September 2012[/editline]
I just noticed my testimony was put into the OP aswell, sweet.
Got my first DE razor in the mail today, cheap chinese razor that a friend who uses it recommended. Came with 100 blades for $15. I was a bit skeptical but it gave me a smoother shave than I ever got with my Gillette fusion. Got a little extra money due to birthday, so I just bought the TOBS soap and badger bristle brush in the OP. Can't wait until they get here
OP gives me a warning from Chrome. Probably one of the images. Anyone else getting this?
[editline]24th September 2012[/editline]
Or, well, first page. Not necessarily OP I guess.
yeah it does that for me too

I don't know why it's doing this, I removed the newest images but I'm still getting the warning. It must be the multi-blade cartridge companies trying to silence us.
In shaving related news, I ordered some Proraso anti-irritation pre-shave and the much hyped Super Iridium blades. I'll post thoughts on them when they arrive.
How do I shave butts
How do I shave butts
Probably ought to use a multiblade razor for that, or have someone do it for you.
Since I live in a country with cuntfuck weather I am growing a beard for winter. I will be fit for rejoining your illustrious ranks once winter breaks.
Knowing this fucking country sometime around July.
I will continue to browse though
Well, I'm just going to stick with my fusion proglide. My mom buys my blades anyway so I'm fine. But heres my question, When is the proper time to change out the cartridge? And is there any shaving cream that will help protect again nicks and razor burn?
Wet shaving looks cool, I'll have to try it out. One question though, how much time do you guys spend shaving? The guy in the video in the OP said he was rushing it a bit to stay with around a 10 minute video. It takes me half as long to shave with my cartridge razor.
Post your shaveden facepunch,

I think after 7 shaves almost any blade will have lost all of it's sharpness, the ones on the proglide are no exception. Gillette claims you could get good shaves out of them for 5 weeks though, but there's small print at the end of the ad that says "based on the number of days used per cartridges". So they never really say how often the razor is actually used for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_zq7q0B618
As far as your razor burn I don't think there's any shaving cream that will help in particular, that sounds like something more to do with the razor. I think your blades are just blunt, that or you're using too much pressure, or the blades are infected . You could try getting a preshave cream like in the op, to make the glide smoother.

It takes more time to use a DE. I use mine anywhere from 10-30 minutes, usually with the half hour shaves on lazy Saturdays. Time just flies by when I'm wetshaving, so it doesn't bother me much.

Can you get razor blade from a dull razor or a razor starting to get dull? Cause I just popped in a new cartridge today and didn't get any razor burn.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly. I'm not surprised you didn't get any burn from using a new cartridge though, it's used-up blades that are behind the burn.
Can you get razor burn from a dull razor or a razor starting to get dull? Cause I just popped in a new cartridge today and didn't get any razor burn.
If you mean razor burn then I'm left to assume that the duller the blade is the higher likelihood of getting razor burn.
I can attest to this because my crappy Gillette Fusion ProGlide (Takeyourmoney edition) after a while will completely kill my neck. Same goes for the DE that did a number on my neck two days ago when I forgot I had been using the same blade for a whole week.
Okay, well I looked up the definition of razor burn and I found out thats not what I meant. My skin just itches quite a bit whenever I've used my blades more then 3 - 4 times.
I've been using a Parker 22R DE safety razor for several months with Astra blades and the same Edge gel I've been using for years, and it works great. No brush, no pre-shave, no aftershave. It probably takes me less than 5 minutes to shave my face (leaving a goatee). I use the same setup (or lack thereof) to shave my whole head, which takes considerably longer.
I was perfectly happy with cartridge razors when they all had 2 blades, but now none of them do. It's all 4 and 5, and I can't stomach the expense and stupidity of these. I'm sure this is a primary motivating factor behind the current "wet shaving" revolution.
BTW, any non-straight razor can be called a "safety razor", but the term normally refers to single blade non-cartridge razors. Similarly, "wet shaving" can mean simply mean not shaving dry, but it's used to mean "shaving like Don Draper."

Yes, I should have mentioned that time spent shaving can be pretty dependent on how much "preparation" you take before you even start. For me, I personally spend as much time preparing my lathers and my face as I do using my razor.
Thought I should mention that I really like the blades and the pre-shave I bought earlier. The pre-shave especially has made quite a difference for me.

As for the silver-tip brush I bought, it wasn't worth the price. It's softer but I don't feel like it has made any notable difference. It's a waste of money in my opinion to buy a brush that's more than 50 dollars, let alone a 100.
Personally, I've dry shaved in the field covered in dirt, dust and cam cream and I was still satisfied with my shave only using a Gillette mach 3.
Perfectly smooth shave, can't see the need for anything else if the Gillette pulls through under those conditions.
Each to their own, I suppose.
I'm glad you can get a good shave from those conditions, but like you mentioned it's each to their own. We all have varying skin types, beard density, and coarseness. Some guys can take a shave from a piece of scrap metal found on the New Jersey turnpike, others can't.
For me one of the best pleasures is the shave itself, as I don't like dealing with any tugging or pulling at all like I experienced with the hydro and fusion. I may give the proglide a try sometime though.
Has anyone here tried cold water shaving with their DE?

Winter has hardly left Scotland this year honestly, even during summer. There was that week in like May and that was about it.
Also it's my birthday in just under 6 weeks so I reckon I'll either ask my parents for some wet shaving stuff as a gift or buy it with my own money.

Shaving every single day at the exact same time doesn't allow much growth. Beards go against ASOD.
Note to self: Moles are not heretics. Do not behead them.
I am probably going to experiment around with different aftershaves. I've never used them before but I bought an Old Spice aftershave when I bought my shaving set about a month and a half ago. I might try one without alcohol since my face gets a bit dry after putting it on. With winter coming and my face getting super dry it would be good to prep for it. Any recs?
Also, cheap places online to buy de blades? I've been using the 10 shark blades that came with my Parker razor and running out.
