I am probably going to experiment around with different aftershaves. I've never used them before but I bought an Old Spice aftershave when I bought my shaving set about a month and a half ago. I might try one without alcohol since my face gets a bit dry after putting it on. With winter coming and my face getting super dry it would be good to prep for it. Any recs?
Also, cheap places online to buy de blades? I've been using the 10 shark blades that came with my Parker razor and running out.
If you're looking for a cheap place online to buy de blades, you're pretty much going to have to look around because it varies brand by brand. But I think ebay and amazon is a pretty good outlet as they have a variety of vendors competing to sell the same product. For instance I bought 100 Feather blades shipped from an ebay seller for 30 dollars when in comparison it costs 40 dollars not including shipping to buy it from other online retailers. So moral of the story is that you just have to look around.
If you don't want to look around, I'd recommend bull-goose shaving as a one stop shop for blades. I ordered some Polsilver Super Iridiums(great blades btw) from him and he shipped them out on the same day I ordered, good prices, good service.

I'd rec an aftershave, but I don't have any experience with any non-alcoholic ones. I just use Witch-hazel which I prefer over my other aftershaves. It's cheaper and has been historically used as aftershave for some time.
I've decided to take the plunge into buying a DE razor so I picked a few products, are they alright?

Soap: http://www.shaving-shack.com/mitchells-wool-fat-shaving-soap-and-ceramic-bowl-120g.html
I'm guessing you can't really go wrong but I wanted to make sure.
those are solid choices, if you can I'd rec that you'd also buy a small sample of Gillette 7' O clock Yellows to compare against the feathers. The feathers are sharper and less smooth. The soap is good, but a bit pricey. I think you can just get the Taylor of Old Bonds Street cream for half the price and be very happy with it. Not to mention it would probably be easier to lather.
They don't sell Taylor of Old Bonds Street on that site so I looked elsewhere and found all the same stuff with the avocado cream and a different brush. Put in a pack of feathers and 7 'o clocks and comes out to £55.56. Thanks for the help :)
Brush in question: http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk/en/Edwin-Jagger/4332898-Edwin-Jagger-Pure-Badger-Shaving-Brush-Ebony.html
It looks like they do, I found them under creams.

Oh yeah, derp. Just realised that the razor is out of stock on the first site so I'll use the second one, the cream is cheaper.

Order done, should be here in a couple of days
Goddamn Tweezerman brush broke on second shave, brush detached from handle
Sorry to hear that, I had a lot of luck with mine. I've used it since July without any problems, now my brother is using it. I guess with it being such a cheap brush, sometimes you just get a dud. It's possible to have the brush reattached and a lot of people resort to this if they used a good brush for many, many years. Though of course in your case, it would just be best to get another one.
If super glue is cheaper I'll just glue it back in.
Is it normal the first time you use your new tweezerman's brush that some amount of hair comes off while lathering? I got quite a bit in the soap and some more on my face, but it seemed it stopped coming out after a bit. I wasn't rough with it or anything.
It's normal for cheaper brushes to do that. That'll stop eventually though (Sometimes expensive ones do this as well). You guys are making me feel a little bad putting that brush in the OP.
Hairs coming off are essentially part of the break-in process for cheaper brushes.
Ah, that's what I was thinking, thanks for clarifying that.
Is the TOBS cream any good at least? A lot of people in this thread must have used it by now judging by how many times I've seen it included in people's checkouts. What kinds are you guys using as well?
Using the avocado. I like it.
All my shaving stuff arrived yesterday and I tried it out this morning. Holy god damn shaves this comfortable should be illegal. It was great until I cut myself, but that gets better with practice. Had some nasty razor bumps from where I've been using cartridge razors and a few of them got sliced. But what impressed me most was how it glided through the hard spots on my face, especially my chin. Every cartridge razor would tug at that point, but the DE razor cut right through it all with no resistance. And the avocado cream smells nice too.
Thanks for making the thread Lamar, wouldn't have tried wet shaving if I hadn't seen it.
I updated the OP.
Any Chicagoland people interested in the 2nd annual "Great Shave 2012"? Free Samples, Free Drink.. I live in the area, so I'll probably end up going with my brother.

A shaving convention?
Must be full of some classy motherfuckers
Oh god I'm such an idiot.
Put the razor into the sink with warm water to warm it up, forget it was there when I went to splash my face and sliced my finger right open. I think I'll be a bit more careful in the future...
Having issues convincing dad to get me some razor equipment, he's all for it but mom is keeping him from buying me some.

You rely on them to wipe your ass as well?
Just buy the damn gear yourself.
In other news havent had a problem since I started to shave with a DE.
Cheers for the extra push to actually buy the gear OP.

I'm 16 with no money, yes I'm relying on my parents for my shaving gear amongst other things :v:
[editline]9th October 2012[/editline]
Is that really such a bad thing?
tell her a lot of money can be saved from not buying cartridges anymore and that it's better on the skin because you don't have 5 blades dragging along your skin. The blades are replaced more frequently too, which is more hygienic (avoids bumps and burn from infection).
Thank you those are some good points I will bring up
Acquisition Disorder kicked in, I have a slant-bar and musgo-real cream shipping to my door. Has anyone here bought anything new since, or at least fancy anything?

I admit I have a problem.
Why would someone want a slant-bar safety razor?
it conforms to your face better instead of a straight bar
HellSoldier, the slant is a more efficient cutter by design. Like a guillotine it slices instead of chops because it makes an oblique cut.
http://shavenook.com/thread-the-slant-concept
If I suddenly stop posting in the next few days just assume I sliced right through my jugular with the slant/feather combo.
Damn now I want one. I'm betting they're expensive though.
nah, it costs as much as any other merkur. 40 dollars or so. I only bought it because I was reading so much hype about it on B&B.
It's called the Merkur 37c
Okay, I know it's probably kind of silly and amazon might be my best bet, are there any good shave-shops that I can order from inside Canada? I'm hoping to dodge the usual customs and shipping fees, at least for the initial large buy.
[editline]fakemerge[/editline]
Heck, while I'm at it, any suggestions one way or the other for what razor and soaps to try? I'm thinking that a long-handled Merkur 180 would be a good razor to start with, but I'm not sure if I'd really need the extra length, but all of the others just seem so short. The last thing I want to do is manage to drop my razor while shaving.
