* Procrastinate -i don't know what it is
Procrastinating means that you put things off until later. Like if you get a project to do, and you wait until the last minute to do it.
Apparently I have ADD from those symptoms. The fake ADD, that is. Personally I just think it's being used just as another word for people who become braindead when not doing a physical activity or an activity they like but my best friend actually does have the real ADD and he does have to take pills or else he ends up being the equivalent of Usain Bolt on crack So I'unno
Basically you think most of it is bullshit, aside from a few cases?
Yes I do. Most of it's just kids who just blow off school because they have no personal reason to pay attention. So they take drugs under the guise of a minor mental illness. I think around 1/3 of those said ADD-afflicted kids are actually genuinely afflicted by ADD to the point it affects schoolwork and the other 2/3 just take drugs because that's the only way they can find the motivation to do shit because they have no motivation to do work in the first place. It's mostly a matter of having clear, reasonable goals or lack thereof that affects schoolwork. I'm not surprised that a lot of facepunch has mental illnesses though.
* Inability to multi-task
There is no such thing as multi tasking. If you study psychology you will learn that the brain switches between tasks, but can never preform two or more major tasks at any given time. This is why in most countries using a cell phone while driving is illegal. It's not because we need our ears to look at the road, it's because our brain switches function to talk to a friend rather than focus on the road. After studying cases of ADD as well as ADHD, I have concluded that patients are not consistent with their diagnosis. I don't recognize this as a real disorder, and would think that kids who have it are simply being kids, or in extreme cases lack discipline. You need to understand pharmaceutical companies like to make money and need to make money. If they can sell you Ritalin they make money, and the doctor gets money for prescribing it to you. It's a sad truth. It doesn't mean they're evil companies and practices that don't do any good, they do. Sometimes however things like this slip the cracks and when there is an opportunity for profit people take it.

I refuse to believe that someone can have no control over what they do. They're just dumbasses. When I think of ADHD, I think of something like this going through somebody's mind: "OH GOD NO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" "I DON'T WANT TO RUN AROUND IN CIRCLES, OH PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!" They have complete control and they know what they're doing, and they have the power to stop bouncing off the walls like a dumbass.
There is a kid with ADHD at my school. I only see him at lunch. He paces around the lunch room jumping up and down in front of people at random intervals. I don't believe this is a real disease/disorder. I think the kid has some deeper mental issues, mainly because I've seen autistic kids behave better and more politely than him.
There is a kid with ADHD at my school. I only see him at lunch.
I also takes pills to help me sleep, My sleeping pills are Novo-Clonidine
And I take Trileptal for epilepsy.
Your wrong, When I don't take my meds, I feel like shit all day and can't control what I say to people, I want to hold it back but just end up blurting it out
Ever heard of a placebo effect? You think the meds help you calm down, and in turn you do so. You become depended on them. Also they load those things with depressants that mellow you out just like pot would. It's not treating any long term problems it's simply giving you a quick fix to the here and now.
Good job rating yourself informative.
When I was little I took Ritilen until I was 6, Then I took something called Concerta until I was 14 now I'm 16 and am taking Adderall, Now my doctor wants to put me on something else >.> I hate when they do that, I adjust to something then they take me off it -.-

ADD is lack of discipline. Drugs only make it worse, as it causes people to rely on it to control themselves. Anyone who thinks ADD is real can blow me.
During my childhood before I was on an medication, I was a nightmare, Every night there would be a temper tantrum about something, my parents would get fed up and say that they are taking me to foster care, then we would get in the car and drive around the block, me thinking we were actually going make me cry and stuff, I never leaned though :v:
Good job rating yourself informative.
*yourselves. Unless it's a bug.
Its a bug
I have ADD I guess I don't actually believe in it (though I tell my psychiatrist otherwise), but I have noticed that I sometimes do things like listen so intently to my own internal monologue that I sort of tune out what other people are saying or miss important details in movies/videogames and FYI BobbyDigital, the stuff they give you for AD(H)D is usually amphetamines or something similar, which are quite the opposite of depressants (think ultra-caffeine)
:frogsiren:TL;DR AHEAD:frogsiren: ADD is real. But a good 3/4 of people who "have" it are bullshitting because they're lazy as fuck. Personally, I take 20mg of Ritalin everyday for school after being diagnosed with ADD when I was 6 or something, but it barely fucking works; makes my stomach churn and my head ache like shit, and I hate taking the stuff, but I force myself to so I at least make an effort to do some work. However, I read a little while ago in a newspaper article about how they did some research into ADD and how it's linked to lack of sleep. Before I read this, I thought "fuck, I need to take pills for the rest of my life", but afterwards, I realized how many symptoms I was showing of lack of sleep. It completely changed what I thought about ADD. Simply put, The article said that between 25 and 50% of children with ADD have trouble sleeping. Children given sleeping pills and treatments to help those with sleeping problems such as Sleep Apnea improved in attention, memory and general mood. So essentially, if you have ADD, theres a good 50% chance that the only thing wrong with you is trouble sleeping. Right now, I'm in a waiting list for a sleep study, which should help determine once and for all if my ADD is being caused by trouble sleeping. I've tried Temazepam before, and when I woke up the next morning, I felt attentive, energetic. I felt as if I could do anything (I wish I was bullshitting and not being so goddamn corny, but it's true). The first thing I did when I woke up was go, "I'm going to make a song today.", and I did, sitting in a chair for 4 hours straight, typing shit into my computer like there was no tomorrow, placing notes here and there, changing things here and there. Usually I'd be bored in about 10 minutes, but I just kept going, and going. Once I was finished with the song (which didn't turn out half bad (sorta(maybe))), I got out of my room, went for a blood test, bought some new headphones and went back to touching up my song. Then I played Gmod and fucked around playing hide and seek on some random city map with my friends for 2 hours; something I'd never be able to do usually without being bored out of my mind. To answer your question: yes, it's real. But for about 50% of people with it (and most likely me), all they probably need is a better nights sleep. Words in bold make you more interesting to read. Sorry for the long read. I major in English and I write everything like a essay. (most likely a very inconsistent essay) Also, link to Temazepam for people who have no idea what that is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temazepam
GET IT DIAGNOSED!!! That's pretty much that situations equivelent of an irl "pics or it didn't happen" I have mild add, I was diagnosed by a pediatritian in Austin, Texas when I was around 10. PERSCRIPTION MEDICINE IS FOR THE PEOPLE IT WAS PRESCRIBED FOR!!!! i have also lost one of my friends because he decided that while I was in the bathroom he should pop all my pills, he overdosed and died. Also aderall is NOT the only add medication and it is CERTAINLY not the best, there are many add medications, and they can also range from pills to patches. So your friend needs to see a doctor, there is a series of tests that CAN acurately diagnose add. Also, ADD AND ADHD ARE NOT THE SAME THING DIPSHITS!!!! Add stands for Atention Defesit Disorder, while ADHD stands for Atention defesit HYPERACTIVITY disorder!! Add is basically ADHD without the hyperactivity!! anyways I apologize for the spelling errors, I typed this damn thing on my iPhone

Hey weirdness, talk to your doctor about alternatives to ritalin, such as the patch form of daytrana, the side effects are much milder (mainly a mild loss of apetite and a slight racing heart)
I have ADHD. I find it extremely hard to sit down and do tedious work without shaking or something. Especially if the work requires a high amount of precision and accuracy. That's partially why my hand writing is so bad, if I need to write something it takes effort, and if I do it for too long I start to go crazy in my mind, my hands start to mildly shake and I rush through it without thinking and put the pen(cil) down to get rid of the extremely anxious feeling. Also, there are moments when I am just relaxed and then a sort of tension runs through me and I feel the need to drop what I was doing, scream, and run as fast as I can without stopping. [editline]12:02AM[/editline] I take Strattera.
Ok yeah sgtnapalm that's pretty much the best example of ADHD I have ever heard.

Definition: AD/HD is the presence of a genetic biochemical disorder that does not allow people to work to their full potential. The Brain: a) Frontal Lobe integrates all the information b) Parietal area processes sensory information c) Temporal – memory, balance, and hearing d) Occipital is the visual area Only the Frontal and Parietal areas are involved in AD/HD. Neurotransmitters: The brain talks to itself chemically and electronically. The chemical messengers are called neurotransmitters. A chemical imbalance is a neurotransmitter failure. Symptoms can vary from day to day, hour to hour and sometimes cannot be seen. They affect everyone differently Two Types: ADD without Hyperactivity and ADHD display different symptoms, have different effects and require different treatment. Here is a big fucking list of the differences between ADD and ADD with hyperactivity. ADD without Hyperactivity Cause: The cause seems to reside primarily in the parietal lobe. The frontal lobe processes are intact. Main Indicators: Fear; anxiety; low brain energy leading to a capacity problem; slow cognitive thinking; daydreaming; avoidance and procrastination; mental confusion; poor memory retrieval. But the frontal processes are intact so these people rely on logic. Impulsiveness: Rarely impulsive but can appear so when frustrated. Distractibility: This is the primary problem. They cannot sustain attention and concentration because: a) low energy which causes loss of focus and follow through b) environmental factors c) their own racing or wandering thoughts Hyperactivity/Restlessness: Due to anxiety, not the ADHD motor issue. These people are driven and cannot relax. Daring activities are rare; activities are not for excitement but for relief from constant, wandering, racing thought patterns and anxiety Social Problems: Shy; withdrawn, immature; often seen and not heard; information processing difficulties lead to not knowing how to talk, dress, act, etc.; conversation is difficult because of slow thinking or missed information; they can manipulate because of fear of others’ anger or guilt about asking directly; interrupt because their wandering thoughts will cause them to forget what they want to say. May appear to not be listening but this is really due to the person’s information processing deficit. Communication: When not talking excessively because of anxiety, these people say little but think a lot; therefore they do not display their thoughts or feelings. They are afraid to express anger or arouse it in others. Time Sense: Time is poorly planned; being late is common but can be improved with teaching and practice Impatience: Do not need instant gratification. These people become impatient only after trying unsuccessfully for a long time at which point they are tired, disheartened and upset. Sensitivity: Shy and fearful of others’ displeasure Frustration Tolerance: Desperate to succeed so will keep trying too long resulting in them being overwhelmed and despairing. This tendency may show as anger. Rigidity of thinking: Tend to be concrete thinkers. May lead to rigid thinking patterns. Planning and Organization: May appear to have difficulty planning but these difficulties are really the result of distractibility, confusion and slow thinking processes Perseveration: A big problem. These people will keep trying too long, burn out, and quit Learning Difficulties: Information processing is poor because information is missed. Difficulties in slow cognition are common but once they understand the material they can use it. Reading and spelling be difficult because of weak phonemic skills. Mental arithmetic can and geometry can also present problems Lying: Aim to please. If they do lie it is usually only to avoid others anger or disapproval. Criminal Activity: Are not as at risk for criminal behavior as people with ADHD because they have a better understanding of the consequences to their action. Stealing is usually only committed to cover up something. People with ADD make poor criminals because they have slow cognitive speed and do not tend to get away in time. Excessive Behavior: 1) talking, 2) spending, 3) gambling, 4) anger, 5) movement, 6) eating, 7) alcohol/drug abuse especially cocaine Caused by no internal STOP sign, no guilt, and no anxiety Positive Attributes: movers and shakers, exciting, energetic, aggressive (all assets in pursuits others are afraid to try). Can do well if self-employed ADD with Hyperactivity Cause: The size and structure of many brain areas differs; especially, a lack of activity in the frontal area (“Hypofrontality”). This is linked to a deficiency of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine which are involved with arousal and alertness. Low serotonin is linked to impulsivity and problematic behavior. Main Indicators: Problems with attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity Impulsiveness: Self-regulation is weak because the control mechanisms of the frontal lobe are not functioning well, e.g. self talk is not used; they are unaware of the consequences to their actions, fast cognitive speed contributes to impulsiveness. Distractibility: Cannot maintain focus so have poor sustained effort; race from task to task; are easily bored; forget and lose things because they missed information due to being distracted; need external motivation Hyperactivity/Restlessness: Due to motor activity, not anxiety. These people crave excitement and stimulation. Social Problems: Egocentric; do not connect with others because they don’t care; are rejected socially because of inappropriate behavior; are intolerant and can become abusive; cannot negotiate so manipulate others; interrupt because of impulsivity and lack of control; do not listen because of attention difficulties and lack of concern for others. Communication: Meaningful relationships. However, personal relationships may be difficult and uncertain. Because of egocentricity, poor focus, distractibility, intolerance, etc. Time Sense: Time is poorly planned (miscalculation of time needed to complete a task); being late is common but can be improved with teaching and practice Impatience: Constantly frustrated and crave instant gratification Sensitivity: Vulnerable to criticism to which they react, sometimes angrily. Frustration Tolerance: Frustration tolerance is low, leading to irritability, anger and aggression Rigidity of thinking: Black and white thinkers due to the frontal processes not functioning properly. They are rigid in relationships and are NOT team players. Planning and Organization: There may be sequencing problems due to poor frontal lobe functioning Perseveration: Not a problem for this population. Learning Difficulties: May have learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia) because of differences in brain functionality. Learning difficulties caused by the ADHD include missing information, and failing to learn from ones mistakes. They can often comprehend information but cannot make use of it. Lying: May lie for no valid reason. Lying is impulsive and fear is not involved. Criminal Activity: A lack of internal rules to govern behavior may lead to criminal activity. Maintaining a job may be a significant difficulty leading to low income and crime. People with ADHD are highly represented in the prison system. Excessive Behavior: 1) talking due to anxiety, not hyperactivity 2) alcohol/ drugs to self-medicate for anxiety (marijuana popular as it gives a sense of relaxation) 3) movement due to anxiety, not hyperactivity Positive Attributes: Positive Attributes: These people do really well what they know they can do

Let's see how I fair on the list [release] * Procrastinate - I'll tell you later * lose and forget things a lot - I lose everything all the time *Difficulty concentrating during school - I am going to community college, so I'd say yes * Forget instructions after given them. - HOLY SHIT * Lose track of time - All the mother fucking time * Impatient - Oh fuck yes * easily frustrated - yes yes yes * Inability to multi-task - For the most part [/release]
Yes, ADD and ADHD are true conditions, people diagnosed with ADD and ADHD fire more neurons in a situation than they have to. Fyi, Doctors cannot offically diagnose people with ADD or ADHD. Only a Psychiatrist can.
