They have out so much stuff into first Terraria, let's see how much this one will have. I sure hope it is easy to host servers again, still remember the countless hours I played with friends on private hosted server.
Is this a standalone game or content for Terraria?
It is a standalone game, but not Terraria 2... :(

The teams at Re-Logic and Engine Software would like to take a few moments to provide the entire Terraria Community with a major announcement. As we hinted earlier in our quite vague "teaser", we will be collaborating on a new project that is not Terraria 2, nor anything else that we had discussed before.
...
Set in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe, Terraria: Otherworld places the player in a life-and-death struggle to restore a once-pristine world – now overrun by a malevolent force that has corrupted nature itself – to its original splendor. Along with a rag-tag band of survivors, will you be able to successfully harness the power of an array of weaponry, magic, defenses, and even the world itself to thwart the designs of this unseen evil?

I have 1233 hours in Terraria, but this only excites me a little.
Fuck why did I buy starbound I could have waited for this.
$20 says everyone that buys this gets scammed like with starbound
$20 says everyone that buys this gets scammed like with starbound
I don't really see how it is a scam. It's $15 and it was known to be in early access, and it still has loads of content with only like 20% finished.

"we'll update every other week!"
*que year of silence*

Except I'm pretty sure they are updating it frequently. They just don't do it on the stable branch anymore because if I remember correctly, people were bitching about having to start over whenever a major change came around.
I don't like that characters look more Starbound-y. I would have preferred if they kept same style for characters, and, well, anything that isn't environment.

Yeah, they did update the unstable branch very often and still do. Same with many early access titles. I'd honestly rather the unstable branch get updated frequently and be more bleeding edge than to release a "stable" build and have a ton of issues.
I couldn't get into terraria. perhaps it would be better with people.
theres a bit of a learning curve with the game, after you get over the basics everything is just so enjoyable. I managed to get about 6 of my friends into the game when it came out on the 360 last year. After they got over the little learning curve the game was so much fun going through each boss with all my friends
I don't understand the starbound prejudice and terraria praise

I can see where you're coming from and I'm still not sure why it really even matters myself. I like both games equally and find that they both do some things better than the other and different. Starbound is a grander scale that tries to focus more on procedural generation, Terraria is a more certain style of gameplay with elements that always remain the same. As far as I know, in Terraria 2 (if it ever were to come out) the world would still be focused on remaining one main world that the character stays in however it would generate almost infinitely once you reached the "edge" of the currently generated world. But overall I feel like although they are obviously similar in a lot of ways they're also quite a world's difference in others. I don't know why people have to compare the two instead of just enjoying whatever they want to enjoy. I look forward to Terraria 2/this new project just as much as I have since Terraria got a bit stale.
Terraria just "feels" better than Starbound. The enemies are more unique and well designed, the weapon s and powerups are better, the physics of just moving around feel smoother. Sounds and music are also better, but that's more opinion based. I think the beepy boop music of terraria fits the art style better. The music in Starbound while fantastic is so good it's better than most AAA games while the actual game is silly with bird people and penguin armies.

red is completely against early access, its confirmed that it wont be like that :v:
my opinion:
game looks pretty ass really. in motion its 'okay' but the screenshots look real 'flash game' or facebook terraria ripoff. thankfully, its not terraria 2, but some spinoff in an alternate reality. I hope that terraria 2 looks more like terraria with 'bigger' sprites like starbound. just my 2 cents

yeah i know they've done what you just said 0 times already!

Nooo Terraria's playermodels are awful

for the record they are rolling out model improvements in the upcoming 1.3 update.

Color me surprised. With all of the hats and clothing I didn't think they would ever do that. Unless it's a minor improvement.
I don't mind the FF6 ripoff characters as much as you'd think
starbound has great character art but the animations are sort of jerky, especially weapon ones
I just like that there is Terraria or Starbound, choose whichever you like. They sorta compete with each other and thats pretty cool.

I think the problem is that Starbound has failed to really use the more ope-ended, randomized content to it's advantage. Makes everything feel samey due to bland weapons, overly-randomized monsters, and lack of meaningful differences between enviroments beyond equipping the appropriate suit.

I really want Terraria in 3D
From the few seconds of gameplay shown here, I really don't like the artstyle for some reason. Something seems off, I guess?
Maybe when there's more footage I'll change my mind.
