All of them, because communists
Why is communism such a threat to the US?
Why do we need a large military if we have large bombs? They can fly anywhere.
Missile defense. Even though U.S. and Russia pretty much only have good, functioning missile defense. Also, insurgency, I guess. You can't just nuke some place with terrorists. There's innocent people, too. Even though I have absolutely no respect for Middle Eastern men...they have absolutely no respect for women.
Oh, I forgot debt. It it's a double sided sword. It single handedly brought the citizens of the US into first world homes. Before credit, the US resembled what China is today. Think about it, most people are farmers. More than half of the population is living in is living in less than moderate housing. Everybody is working, even children (although being communist, China provides education and healthcare to all). Factories and industry is popping up all over the place. Because of credit, people can afford (not really) nice homes, a refrigerator, and a car. But in doing so, the person becomes a slave to their employer (or any other employer) until they can pay off all of their debts. Sadly, there are people who work their entire lives and remain in debt. After they retire, they just pass the debt onto the other generation. And to think that slavery has been abolished. WE COULD BE SPENDING ALL OF THAT MONEY ON EDUCATION, INFRASTRUCTURE, SCIENCE, AND/OR AGRICULTURE.
yeah a fucking farm that's what i want to live in fuck computers
You are an idiot, along with everyone else who hates the U.S. military. Almost nobody agrees with our current military operations, but you really think that reducing our military is a viable option? We would be invaded by half wit countries like Iran and North Korea easily, and then once they install a dictatorship, then you'd see the real world.
Lol. Military spending is ridiculous. We could spend way less and still have the strongest national defense with a reserve.
I wouldn't say everyone hates us. We could do just as good without spending as much. How many of our military campaigns have been absolutely necessary?
All of them.

Giant dick waving contest.
Why is communism such a threat to the US?
It was just the Cold War way of thinking for the Right wing. Since communism was expanding at a rather alarming rate, and usually tended toward hostile actions while doing so, much of eastern Europe was threatened by USSR expansion, it took a big alliance to keep them back. The "evil" communists ideals were just propaganda to keep the treaties together, and to make sure western countries weren't invaded, even by theories. It wasn't a good time. People don't really think that way anymore since the USSR is gone, and China would be crazy to attack its greatest trade partner.
Alright guys, lets cool off the flaming. I think missile defense is the way to go, along with subs. Having an insane invasive army like the marines is just crazy.
Hey I like how people bitch about an $800 billion health reform and then don't even know the military budget for next year is close to $700 billion.
Don't we spend more money on our military than everyone else on the planet combined?

We're asking for money from China for gods sake, of all the countries, the US owes China money. Kind of hypocritical, but whatever.
so we can kick ass
Russia WANTS us in Afghanistan to protect it's interests in Central Asia. You don't want radical Islam spreading in your country. Not the ideas of Islam held by moderates, the kind of extremism that's oh-so-popular with the religious nutjobs.
I think missile defense is the way to go, along with subs. Having an insane invasive army like the marines is just crazy.
I've always thought that if I ran a country, I wouldn't have a traditional army. I'd have like a core team of the single most badass, best trained and best equipped assassins on the planet. Dictator I wanna take out? screw the tanks, planes, bombs and all that shit. Just send in 50 ninja motherfuckers. Imagine if the US spent it's entire budget on training, equpping and supporting 500 Bond-like clinical fuckers.
yeah a fucking farm that's what i want to live in fuck computers
Where do you think fruits/veggies/livestock is made, the supermarket? Are you questioning the importance of agriculture?

Even though I have absolutely no respect for Middle Eastern men...they have absolutely no respect for women.
There's no such thing as a working missile defense system. You may look on the news and see 'Missile shield successful!', but really it was just a close course test. In the test, the interceptor missile's target is already tracked and picked out, whereas in real life it would take 20 minutes to detect a missile (that leaves only 10 minutes to shoot it down). Also, cruise missiles take evasive actions in real life, whereas the dummy missile in those tests were flying on a linear path. The technology is still a long ways off.
cause we're america, a country of all countries envy. we must have more bases and make one underwater if we are to make them cry.
Not sure who we're defending ourselves against.
Why do we need a large military if we have large bombs? They can fly anywhere.
You can drop any amount of artillery, bombs, and missiles on a patch of ground; you can burn it and decimate it until it is but churned mud, but you won't be able to uproot an enemy and hold that ground without tanks and infantry. I thought this was like a law of warfare or something.
It's an ego thing, to keep the citizens in place. To think that we're superior both militarily and economically (not true either way) keeps people from forming a revolution (because they believe that there is nothing better to turn to). People are taught to become good workers (in school) in order to become a successful cog in the capitalist machine. The meat-heads join the military. To have a conflicting opinion, you are automatically deemed "unpatriotic".
Replace capitalist with communist and the paragraph makes sence.

We're kind of like the self-elected world police. That and everyone hates us ('cuzz we're so much more awesome than everyone else :fsmug:)
It's probably been pointed out earlier but I'm too lazy to skim the last few pages, but here it is anyway: The United States only shells out about 15% of the budget on military, most of the budget deficit comes from Social Security and Medical programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. It's the old Guns Vs. Butter analogy, either you spend more for the military power of the state (guns) while sacrificing the well being of the citizens (butter) or vice versa. North Korea on the other hand spends about 80%-85% on military. But you're wondering why the United States spends so much on it. Well it's simple, the US is no longer an isolated country, that's long gone. Now we are a world power and we need to maintain our military as much as we can, but really it's not a huge chunk of government spending.
