It scratched the shit out of discs if you moved it while it was on.
It's a real shame that this probably isn't Microsoft's fault at all, but a silly manufacturing error.

they probably used some garbage plastic gears or something in the disk-eating mechanism, making a few thousand units fucked.
on the bright side, they're replacing them for free and the system is still usable for non-disk games.
